CLAIRE

The night creeped in closer and the cold air that brushed by slapped our skins as we stood under the maple tree. The leaves rustled on top of us, and my eyes trailed to it.

We had been waiting for a while, a long while, but Daniel was nowhere to be found. I glanced at Luis, and we both shared a look. I sighed and rested my back firmly on the wall.

Had Daniel bailed on me? After telling me to wait here for him? I began to feel ire rise up within me. But then something else hit me. What if everything Daniel had told me was part of his elaborate plan to get me killed?

I swallowed and looked up at Luis. “Hey, what if Daniel-“

“Cora’s spy who was sent to lure you out and kill you?” he cut in.

My eyes went wide. He had read my mind perfectly. Luis sighed and rested his hand at the handle of his sword that sat at the side of his hips.

“I am guessing that was what you thought of too.”
