LOGINMuriel’s smile was all warmth on the surface, but my thoughts were anything but calm. It wouldn’t be surprising if Soren eventually found out about my marriage to the Blackwoods.
“I’ve heard quite a bit about you from Soren’s friends,” she said pleasantly.
“I just hope they’re good things,” I replied.
She smiled again, but there was something calculating in her eyes that made my chest tighten.
Soren’s phone rang, cutting through the tension. He pulled it from his pocket and glanced at the screen. “It’s Dad from the pack. Give me a second.”
The moment he turned away, something shifted in the air between us. I was already moving to leave when Muriel stepped forward and shoved me hard in the chest.
“I know why you’re here at the Lycan Academy,” she said coldly. “But just like the others drooling over Soren, you don’t stand a chance. So, I’ll give you a choice to leave!”
I barely had time to process her words, let alone respond, when she suddenly stumbled back and fell.
“Muriel!” Soren rushed back and helped her to her feet.
She looked up at him with wide, frightened eyes, the same orbs that had been cold and calculating just seconds ago.
“As much as I wanted to fight your friend, I don’t want the school to think I’m a bully just because I’m Alpha Derrick’s daughter,” she muttered.
Soren frowned, clearly confused. “What’s going on?”
Before I could say a word, she spoke again. “She accused me of stealing you from her.”
I exhaled slowly, the words catching in my chest like something lodged wrong.
Annoyance flickered across Soren’s face as he turned to me. “Gwen, apologize to Muriel. We already talked about this, you shouldn’t have hurt her!”
“No, it’s fine,” Muriel cut in gently. “Let’s just forget it. She’s new here, and something like this won’t look good on her record. Besides, I don’t want others think I let her hurt me. My dad told me to keep a low profile.”
Soren’s jaw tightened. “That’s not the point! This is the Lycan Academy, and violence isn’t tolerated here. Gwen needs to understand that!”
“But I didn’t do anything!” I exclaimed.
“Gwyneth!” Soren’s tone dropped into something cold and authoritative. “Do you want me to inform Alpha Conrad that you caused an incident here at school on your very first day?”
The mention of my father’s name hit like a hand around my throat. My fists tightened, and I pressed my lips together. He knew me well.
Every misunderstanding, every incident that got out of hand in the pack, had chipped away at whatever trust between Dad and me. It always felt like it was me, always me causing trouble, always the reason Luna Rosalia sometimes didn’t trust him.
“Muriel, slap Gwen!” I heard Soren command.
“What?” I muttered, stunned.
“If you refuse to apologize, let Muriel return the pain you caused her,” he added.
“Soren, let’s just forget this. Gwen didn’t mean it…” Muriel tried to intervene. However, I noticed her lips curl, as if she were enjoying the cruel little drama unfolding between us.
“No! I am soon to be the Alpha of the Ravencrest Pack, and I already know what must be done. Gwen made a mistake, so she must be punished! It’s just a slap, nothing more. No blood will be shed,” Soren insisted.
A pang of hurt shot through me. I barely recognized the man I had devoted so much of my heart to.
Muriel’s hand swung toward my cheek, but I moved just in time, blocking it instinctively.
“What is going on here?!” A deep voice barked.
Soren straightened immediately, and even Muriel seemed to shrink slightly. The man striding toward us was broad-shouldered and calm, carrying authority the way some people carry height effortlessly.
“Physical incidents are forbidden on school grounds. Do you want to get expelled?” His voice rang familiar; I realized he was the man from last night at the training grounds.
“Sorry, High Chancellor,” Soren said. “My friend just arrived yesterday. She doesn’t know the rules yet. But she hurt my mate!”
So, the man was part of the academy council; no wonder they both went rigid around him. The man’s gaze shifted to me; he looked to be in his thirties.
“I want to be very clear; I didn’t touch her!” I protested, frustration rising in my chest.
“Gwen, can you just admit it? We’re only asking for a simple apology. Why are you being so stubborn?”
The High Chancellor’s eyes shifted to Soren, and suddenly the man seemed almost entertained. “Have you actually seen her hurt your mate?”
Soren’s certainty didn’t waver. “No. But I know Gwen. She’s been in love with me for years, and this news wouldn’t sit well with her. That’s why she hurt Muriel!”
That was what broke something open in me, how deeply he trusted Muriel.
“Interesting…” The Chancellor’s tone stayed calm, but it cut through the tension. “And what if I told you I’ve been watching all along… and I never saw her hurt your mate? What would you do then?”
Soren swallowed hard, and I could see the doubt flicker in his eyes.
I straightened, my voice firm. “And for the record, I’m not even a member of your pack! Even if you’re the King of the world, or whoever of the Ravencrest, you don’t have the right to discipline me!”
I turned and walked away before he could find an answer to that.
Behind me, Muriel’s voice floated after me, soft and defensive. “I’m really sorry, Soren. Maybe I just tripped; it was clumsy of me. That’s why I thought we should just let it go.”
‘This woman was extraordinary!’
From the window above, I hadn’t seen him, the man in black, silent and completely invisible from the grounds.
He had been watching everything…
When I woke, the sun was already high above the horizon. Kaelen’s arms were still wrapped possessively around me, holding me against his chest as though he had no intention of ever letting go. Heat rushed to my face. Carefully, I tried to slip out of his embrace, afraid he’d notice how warm my skin had become. The moment I moved, he followed. It was as though my scent drew him in, even in his sleep. Every inch I managed to put between us vanished as he instinctively closed the distance. I kept scooting farther away until I reached the edge of the bed. Before I could tumble off, Kaelen caught me with one arm and effortlessly pulled me back against him. “Why do you keep running from me?” he murmured, his voice rough with sleep. “Do I smell that bad?” “N-No! Not at all!” A faint chuckle escaped him. His fingertips brushed gently over my flushed cheek before he finally opened his eyes. “Were you really planning to deny me something as simple as holding my mate?” My heart skipped
Dawn was beginning to break when Kaelen and I returned to the Alpha’s manor. Ever since we left the healing tent, I couldn’t shake the tension I’d witnessed between him and his cousin. I wanted to ask him about it. “Do you want to eat?” Kaelen asked, pulling me from my thoughts. After spending hours watching over the pups, I realized how empty my stomach was. I nodded. “I haven’t eaten in hours.” Without another word, he led me to the kitchen. To my surprise, the Alpha of Thornfell rolled up his sleeves and began preparing food himself. As he busied himself chopping vegetables and slicing the meat, I couldn’t hold my tongue any longer. “There’s something I’ve been wondering about…” I said carefully. “You know your cousin was behind what happened tonight, don’t you?” His hands paused for only a heartbeat before continuing. “I understand if you can’t tell me everything… but I wish I knew at least something.” Without stopping what he was doing, he began to explain. “He was once
“Lies! Everything you said is a lie! You’re just trying to pin your own crime on someone else!” he shouted. His voice betrayed that he was cornered, yet he still insisted on continuing the deception. “Take off your gloves and show us your hands,” I demanded. Kaelen glanced at the two warriors standing nearby and signaled them to restrain the man. They obeyed at once, gripping his arms before he could think to run. The wolf’s eyes widened with panic as Kaelen strode over and stripped the gloves from his hands himself. Around us, the parents gathered inside the healing den recoiled in shock, instinctively putting distance between themselves and the accused. “A-Alpha…” he stammered. Kaelen’s expression hardened into ice. “Explain yourself. Now.” “T-There’s sap from another plant on my hands! Please, Alpha, spare me this once!” Desperate, he crawled toward the other parents, but they only met him with clenched jaws and looks of disgust. “You’d better pray my wife finds it in her hea
Minutes later, I finally finished brewing a full cauldron of medicine, with Amanda guiding me through every step over the phone. “The color should be pale silver,” she instructed. “And it should be thick, like honey.” The potion matched her description perfectly, even though she had never seen it herself. “It’s done!” Everyone inside the tent heard my announcement, and the two healers immediately rushed over. “Please check it,” I said. The head healer lifted the cauldron, breathed in the herbal scent, then dipped a spoon into the potion and tasted it. The instant he swallowed, relief spread across his face. “Quick! Give it to the pups immediately!” “Only three spoonfuls at a time,” Amanda reminded us, having heard the exchange through the phone. “Repeat the dose every hour. It’s medicine, not magic. Don’t force an entire cup down them at once. Once it enters their bodies, it needs time to work, especially since their hearts and stomachs are still so small.” “Thank you so much
To anyone looking in, I was the one who had put the pups in danger. After everything that had happened in the Black Forest, it wasn’t hard to see why. The two guards captured there were now being questioned, and by now the wolves of Thornfell had likely learned that I had used belladonna berries. Every piece of evidence pointed straight at me. I forced myself to meet Kaelen’s gaze. “Alpha, those berries aren’t mine. I didn’t bring any belladonna back from the Black Forest. I used them only to protect myself, not to poison anyone in this territory.” I swallowed the knot in my throat. “Do you trust me?” His golden eyes searched mine. He remained silent for a long moment, and my nerves tightened with every passing second. We had only just begun to trust each other. Now, despite every reason to question one another, we needed that trust more than ever. Finally, he gave a firm nod. “Beta,” he commanded, “find out where those berries came from.” “I’ll help prepare the remedy,” I sai
[Kira]“She’s Kira Wilder, my mate. Be kind to her,” Kaelen said, introducing me toa dozenpups. They stared at me with wide, curious eyes. Most of them looked no older than four to six years old.Alpha, your mate is pretty,” one little girl said.“Alpha is handsome too!” another pup added.Kaelen draped an arm around my shoulders.“So, do we make a good pair?” he asked, his tone teasing but with an edge of authority that made the pups sit up straighter, and made my cheeks flush.“Yes!” they answered in unison.“Then take good care of her, alright?” Kaelen reminded them again, more gently this time. Then he turned to me and pressed a kiss to my cheek, right there in front of everyone. He must have looked into my past. After the rogue attack, when
[Gwyneth] Different wolves arrived at the Auction House as I stood outside near the entrance. The Blackwood Pack was hosting this year’s event, which made obtaining a Blood Invitation Token easier than expected; it had come directly from Alpha Derrick’s own blood. “Isn’t this Gwen Valerius of the
[Soren]“That wench Gwen is clearly the one pushing Lynn to end our marriage!” Ned snarled, his voice bouncing off the walls of the council hall.“Our marriage was fine before she came here! Why did you invite her
“Divorce?!” My father’s voice thundered through the Council Hall, the grand chamber where he met with the pack’s most influential wolves, just like today. I was there as well, standing quietly in support of my sister. “Lynn, we cannot permit this,” Luna Rosalia said sharply from beside the Alpha
