ALEXANDER

The solid clang of the metal door closing echoed through the room, making me lift my head.

Cassandra lay beneath me, her body tense, breath shallow, and eyes spitting fire. Her lip curled like she was seconds from lunging at me but I knew better. That fury? It wasn’t real. Not fully. It was just a wall she threw up when she felt cornered. She looked like a pissed off kitten pretending to be a lion.

To make it worse for her, I leaned in, fingers brushing the faint cut I’d left on her cheek earlier. It had mostly healed, but the skin was still tender. She hissed and turned her face slightly, and I smiled at her reaction before glancing up. Claude was standing there, arms folded, his expression steeped in judgment.

He always did walk around like the moral compass of the family.

“What do you want, brother?” I didn’t bother moving from Cassandra, still pinning her with one hand at her throat. Not enough to cut off her air but enough to remind her she’d lost this round.

I could feel the tick in her jaw, the tension that said her pride was still trying to claw its way out. She wasn’t used to losing. Not even in play.

“We have a crisis.”

His tone made me want to roll my eyes, but I kept still. Dealing with his dramatics wasn’t part of the plan today.

“I have it under control.” My grip on her throat tightened slightly, and she let out a muffled groan. It was supposed to be a protest, but her hips had arched subtly so she wasn’t exactly unhappy.

She had tried to use Claude’s interruption as a distraction. Rookie move. My weight held her steady, and her efforts to wriggle free only made things more fun. I wasn’t done playing. And she wasn’t done proving herself.

“If there was something that needed my attention, I wouldn’t be down here.”

Claude shot me that look again. The one that said he was five seconds away from being a pain in my ass.

I sighed. Loudly.

Then I pushed up from the mat, letting Geneva up too. She didn’t waste a second. Scrambled to her feet, jaw tight, chest heaving.

I picked up a towel and lazily wiped my face. Barely a sheen of sweat on my skin. I could do this all day.

“How long have you been down here?” Claude’s voice held suspicion.

I checked the clock and shrugged. “Two hours, give or take.”

He looked past me at Cassandra. She was gathering her gear, moving with that same irritated grace she always had when she didn’t get her way.

“And you’re still alive?” He sounded genuinely surprised. Maybe even a little impressed.

Geneva’s thick accent curled around her response as she tossed her braid over her shoulder. “He’s been… distracted.”

The sarcasm in her voice was almost sharp enough to cut through the tension.

“Honeymoon phase,” she muttered as she brushed past us and exited the gym.

I let out a low chuckle and smacked the back of Claude’s head. He grumbled but didn’t retaliate.

I followed her with my eyes, resisting the urge to go after her and finish what we started. That damn interruption. I had her right where I wanted her.

Yes, I liked toying with the cold hearted princess. Losing every round would have made her snap. And I needed someone to be as annoyed as I was. Misery loves company and all that.

“What, you came down here just to confirm if I was screwing your little crush?” I shot at Claude, amused.

He opened his mouth, probably to argue, but seemed to think better of it. Just sighed and stalked ahead. Kept a short distance between us like it would make some kind of point.

“I’m not five. I don’t have crushes and if I liked a woman, it wouldn’t be her.” He finally muttered as we neared my office.

He opened the door and stepped aside, waiting for me to enter first like the good little soldier he pretends not to be.

“You’re just seriously infatuated then?” I teased as I walked in.

“She’s smart. And she lasted two hours with you and still walked out. That earns some admiration.”

I smirked. Stubborn, arrogant little prick. Always had something to prove.

I sat down, suddenly hit by this strange, heavy heat that settled on my skin like smoke. I didn’t like it. It came out of nowhere and made my insides stir. Something ancient and animal. I cleared my throat, pushing it away. Entertaining that feeling would only end one way and not a good one.

“So? What’s the real reason you came looking for me?” I asked, adjusting in my chair. “Are they done dealing with my dearest uncle’s pets?”

“That’s why I came,” he said, dragging a hand through his hair.

I narrowed my gaze. “What happened?”

“We tried to negotiate. Turns out they’ve lost contact with him. They were trying to confirm orders. Expected a war. Since we didn’t bite, they’re hesitating.”

“They have brains after all,” I muttered.

Claude didn’t comment, but the shift in his stance said he was thinking the same thing. If my uncle had any common sense, he’d know war with me only had one outcome. His head on a pike and his followers on their knees.

Everyone liked to whisper that I was power hungry, that I was building an empire. They didn’t understand the burden that came with it. More land meant more packs. More packs meant more chaos to manage. More Lycans to train in our way of doing things.

People thought it was glory.

It was just a lot of headaches.

I stood, already done with the conversation. “If they want war, we give them a deadline. I’m not wasting time.”

Before he could respond, footsteps slapped hard against the floor.

A girl rounded the corner, gasping. She skidded to a stop, bracing herself against the wall, hand trembling as she tried to catch her breath.

I tensed, straightening immediately. Something was wrong. She didn’t look like someone trying to cause trouble but she did look like someone who had bad news.

He grumbled beside me. “Now what?”

I ignored him.

Her face was vaguely familiar, but it was the hair that gave it away. Long, dark, and always pulled into a thick twist. The maid. The one always shadowing Alina.

I crossed the distance in three quick steps and grabbed her arm. She winced but didn’t try to pull away. Didn’t even flinch.

“What happened to her?” My voice didn’t sound like my own.

“She… she passed out,” the maid stammered, blinking fast, panic rising. “She isn’t waking up. We’ve tried everything.”

Everything inside me snapped still.

And then turned to fire.

ALINA“What?!” The word tore out of me before I could stop it.Lisa glared at me, and I clamped both hands over my mouth. I shook my head, trying to suppress the horror crawling up my throat. I didn’t want to imagine what would happen if Alexander found out. I was already caught between disaster and ruin.Once he learned all the things I was keeping from him, I wouldn’t even get the chance to exhale before he decided I wasn’t worth the trouble.“What are we going to do?” I turned to her, panic tightening every muscle in my chest. I genuinely didn’t know.“I don’t know.” Her voice cracked, and it sounded like she was seconds from breaking. I suddenly realized I was making things worse. She had come to me for comfort, not another wave of panic. And here I was, piling on fear.I’d never been good at fixing anything.“After what Jane pulled, I’m sure Alexander is looking into everything. He’s not just angry that I got hurt. It’s the fact someone got into his pack, past all his protection.

ALINAI found Lisa staring at the window, her legs folded beneath her and knees oulled to her chest. I didn’t know when I'd fallen asleep. The last thing I remembred was sitting in the spot for what felt like hours, drowning in thoughts about all the possible ways Alexander would react once he learned the truth. Both truths. There was no real way out of this. Whatever option i might think of definitkey neded in me being dead.I pushed that fear down and walked to where Lisa was. She hadn’t even realized I was awake, so lost in her thoughts, which was completely unlike her. And I hadn’t seen her since the day of the explosion. Jane mentioned she had been sent off on some kind of assignment. Something about the way she looked now made me forget my own problems.I placed a gentle hand on her shoulder, and she flinched hard like I’d hit her.“Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” I gave her arm a reassuring squeeze. She nodded and offered me a smile. Or attempted to, rather. Her lips barely

ALEXANDERKillian wouldn’t just get on with it. I expected that from him.He had to be a little shit first. I’ll admit I was surprised when he said we should jump straight into it. Normally, he prefers theatrics. All that drmataic shit. It's how he made it this far. Not by being the strongest, but by being the most terrifying brand of patient. If you pissed him off, you’d never know. If you betrayed him, he’d invite you to dinner like nothing happened. Then, you’d start to feel hot. Chest tight. Your lips numb. By the time you realized he’d poisoned your drink, it would be too late. And Killian? He’d sit there and watch. Smile on his face. That same bored, lazy one he always wore. Watching your final moments like you were entertainment. His last words are always the same, at least according to his victims. “I didn’t give you life. But I can end it.”Honestly, I think hearing that as you die might just be worse than the dying part.“Before we leave—” I began, and he groaned like I’d st

ALINAI cleared my throat and looked down, my thoughts tangled with everything that had happened and everything still happening. Now didn’t feel like the right time to tell him James was my mate. Not when the first thing he’d done was reject me.I remembered the jolt of hope I’d felt when I first realized it when I believed it meant I’d finally be safe and protected. That he’d shield me from the whispers, the stares, the cruelty of the pack. But he hadn’t. He’d rejected me.Whatever flicker of excitement I’d felt in that moment, I couldn’t feel it anymore.I must have taken too long to speak, because Alexander shifted beneath me with a sharp sound between a growl and a sigh. I’d forgotten I was still on his lap, and when he stood, I almost fell. But he caught me before I could hit the ground. His arms wrapped around me. For a split second, I hated how safe I felt there.Once I was balanced, he turned and started to walk away.Panic surged. I couldn’t let him leave like this. Maybe it

ALEXANDERI didn’t expect Alina to want to hear about what happened so soon. Not after everything. But I needed answers. I needed to hear it from her lips before I could decide what kind of punishment to hand down to that mutt. And if it was left to me, death wouldn’t cut it. That would be far too generous and too easy. What I wanted for him didn’t fall anywhere close to easy. But she looked like I might be the one to hurt her. Like she wasn’t sure how I’d react. And that pissed me off more than anything.I wasn’t angry at her. I was angry with myself. Because something I had done some version of me that I had let slip through had left her believing I’d ever turn that anger on her.I took a breath, grounding myself. This wasn’t about me. It was about her. Her fear. Her safety. How she was feeling. And I had to remember that.“He didn’t do anything,” she said, her voice low and tight, her eyes fixed somewhere on the floor. I didn’t believe that. But I held back.I reminded myself again

ALINAI opened my eyes slowly, blinking against the soft light filtering in. The first thing I saw was the doctor watching me with a strained kind of worry, like she was waiting for something terrible to happen. My head throbbed. My eyes felt dull and heavy. For a second, I thought I was still dreaming. I hoped, actually. Or maybe I’d slipped back into yesterday. Maybe I’d wake up again and nothing would be wrong. But everything was still wrong. And it wasn’t a dream.“Oh, good, you’re awake.” The doctor exhaled, her shoulders slumping in visible relief. “You scared me there for a moment.”I didn’t respond. I was still waiting for her to laugh and to say she was joking or that there was a mixup. That this was all some kind of bad misunderstanding. But she didn’t.Instead, her face softened, lips pressing together before she spoke again. “You shouldn’t be worrying yourself, okay? It’s not good for you. Or…” she hesitated, “for the baby.”That confirmed all my greatest fears. I froze.E
