NOAH’S POV

“What bet, Kade?”

Behind us, the reception carried on in fragments. The music still drifted across the garden, but the laughter had thinned to scattered murmurs.

My heart hammered hard enough I could feel it in my throat.

Kade stared at me. His jaw was tight, his lower lip split from Luca’s fist, blood drying dark at the corner of his mouth.

His jacket hung rumpled, his hair a mess from the fight.

“Kade.”

He dragged his tongue over the split and winced.

“I don’t care about Luca right now!”Kade’s mouth closed. My breath kept catching halfway in, and I hated that I couldn’t get enough air to finish a sentence without my voice shaking.“I don’t care what Luca did. I don’t care what he thought he knew about me. I don’t care who was right about the bet.”I swallowed, but the tightness in my throat remained.“I’m asking you right now, Kade.”His expression shifted.“I want to know if I was ever anything more than something you wanted to win.”He didn’t answer. My hand slipped from my chest.“I-I don’t even know what I’m supposed to believe anymore.”The admission hung there between us. I wished, instantly, violently, that I could snatch it back out of the air.For the first time all afternoon, he looked like a man who actually wanted to say something and genuinely didn’t know what.I shook my head. “I get it now.”He drew breath. “Noah, listen—”“No.”“Just let me—”“I said no!”My voice tore across the garden. He stopped.I looked at him

For a moment, all I could hear was the music drifting across the garden. Then, my hand moved and cracked across his face. His head jerked to the side, and the sound seemed to hang between us long after my palm had connected with his cheek.Pain shot through my hand. For one stunned second, I stared at him, my fingers spread, my palm burned.Kade slowly turned his head back.A red mark was already rising across his cheek. He worked his jaw once, then ran his tongue over the inside of his split lip. His eyes settled on me again.“Well.” The corner of his mouth twitched, though there was no real amusement in it. “That answers whether you’ve been holding back.”I hit him again before he could say anything else. This time, I put everything I had into it. My palm caught the other side of his face, and his head snapped away from me. The sting in my hand sharpened, but I barely felt it beneath the rush of anger flooding my chest.“Jesus Christ, woman.”“Screw you!”My voice broke on the word

I’ve made several questionable decisions in my life.”My stomach tightened.Sweetheart.He’d called me that when he’d pulled me close, when his mouth had been against my skin.“What bet did you make with Luca!?”He glanced over my shoulder, back toward the reception, where Luca still stood surrounded by both families and a steadily growing crowd of curious guests. Then his eyes came back to mine.“Go back inside, Noah.”A cold shiver crawled down my spine.“Answer me.”“You don

“Leave her out of this.”“Why? Because you actually care about her?”I stared at him.He wanted an answer. Something he could twist, something he could throw back in my face.He wasn’t getting one.Luca laughed, bitter and ugly. “That’s fucking rich.”“Luca,” Noah said quietly. He ignored her, wiping blood off his nose with the back of his hand, smearing it across his knuckles.“You know your actual problem, Kade? You always have to take things too far. You couldn’t just come back and live your own life. You had to shove your way into mine and burn it down.”“Your life had always been a mess.”“Fuck you.” His jaw tightened. Then something worse than anger crept into his face — satisfaction, the exact look of a man who’d just found the one card left in his hand that could actually do damage.“Fine. If we’re exposing secrets today, why don’t we talk about our little bet?”My face didn’t move. But something underneath it did, cold and sudden.“Careful, Luca.”“Why? Worried she’ll find ou

Luca stared at me. And for a second I thought he hadn’t understood a single word. Then his fist connected with my jaw. My head snapped sideways, pain flaring sharp and immediate, bright enough to sting behind my eyes. I rolled my jaw, tasted copper, and looked back him. I wiped my mouth with my thumb, glanced at the blood smeared across it, and smiled. “Feel better?” “Shut the hell up.” “That bad, huh?” He grabbed the front of my jacket, knuckles turning white against the fabric. “You’re lying.” “About which part? The pregnancy, or the part where your wife didn’t get knocked up by the Holy Spirit?” His grip tightened. I could practically hear the last functioning brain cell he had left begging him not to hit me a second time. He ignored it. “You’re a fucking liar.” “How about you ask your wife.” He shoved me backward. Someone near us gasped, a short sharp sound swallowed fast by the music still playing, absurdly, under all of it. Before either of us could move again, At

Neither did I, if I was honest — but I had theories, and none of them made our parents look good. Whatever it was, I couldn’t locate the part of me that cared. They could tear each other apart. They’d had twelve years to make things right with me and chosen, every single time, not to. Now they could live with the bill. “Anyway.” I lifted my glass. “Congratulations again. Your wedding’s already produced a divorce announcement before the cake’s even cut. Impressive, even for us.” “Can you be serious for five minutes?” “Probably. Never had much reason to try.” He shook his head, but something had shifted underneath the anger now. Exhaustion, maybe. Then his gaze followed mine, unprompted, straight across the garden. Straight to Noah. And my brother, reliable as ever, found something else to be certain about. “You’re still watching her.” I took a slow sip. “Am I?” “Don’t play stupid. It doesn’t suit you.” “Neither does that tie, but here we are.” He ignored it. “Noah and I ha
