Chapter 2

Author: Washing Wheat
That was true.

It was the undeniable truth.

For years, I had been relentless in my pursuit of Brogan. Despite my wealthy background, I had lowered myself to the point of exhaustion, laboring tirelessly just to please him.

At his slightest request, I would sacrifice my time staying late at the office or attending endless business functions. I pushed myself to the brink, ignoring the toll it took until my health began to fail.

What did all that devotion earn me?

In the end, I was nothing more than the punchline of a joke shared among his circle of friends.

"When you think about it, Ava is basically Brogan’s most well-trained dog," one of them remarked.

Brogan simply stood there, swirling the liquid in his glass, offering no defense on my behalf.

Instead, he merely let out a soft, dismissive laugh.

"What are you talking about? If she’s a dog, then she’s just a dog. Where’d you get ‘most’ from?"

The room burst into laughter.

As the room erupted in mockery, I felt as if a pail of ice water had been poured over me, chilling me to the bone.

The sensation was freezing, yet it provided the sudden clarity I needed to wake up.

After reflecting for a moment, I reached for my phone. I navigated to the contact information for the blind date my family had arranged—someone they insisted was a perfect match for me.

Previously, I had been so preoccupied with Brogan that I constantly delayed the introduction and even attempted to undermine the arrangement, but that devotion had clearly been misplaced.

However, maybe it wasn’t the most ethical move right now.

Still, everyone knows the fastest way to get over someone is to start something new.

I tapped the screen.

"Want to meet tomorrow?"

I didn’t expect a reply almost instantly.

"Sure."

My blind date was a gentleman who told me to pick the time, and he’d handle the place.

The problem was that when my parents brought it up before, I hadn’t listened to a single word, so I knew absolutely nothing about him.

I arrived early at the agreed location, hesitating outside the entrance. What if I didn’t recognize him later? That would be awkward.

As I paced back and forth, I accidentally bumped into someone.

I looked up to see a sharply tailored suit. Then, as my gaze traveled higher, I saw features so refined that it almost felt unfair. The man wearing that face was looking at me with a calm, gentle expression.

"Why aren’t you going in?" His thin lips were perfectly shaped and almost dangerously kissable.

I swallowed before I could stop myself, then immediately realized how inappropriate that was.

I knew who he was. Leon Williamson. A major name in the industry.

I had seen him countless times on Brogan’s company’s target partnership list. Rumor had it that he was ruthless, cold, and nearly impossible to approach. Not a single collaboration had ever succeeded.

I quickly stepped back to give him space. "Sorry, sorry. I’m waiting for someone. I spaced out a little. Please, go ahead."

The man in front of me let out a soft laugh. "Miss Bennett."

I froze, surprised. How did he know my name?

There was a smile lingering in his eyes. "Is it possible… that I'm the person you’re waiting for?"

I was stunned. My family had only said they were setting me up with someone significant, but I never imagined it would be someone on Leon’s level. Not until I was sitting across from him in the private room he had arranged.

On the surface, I kept a polite smile. Under the table, my hands were flying across my phone, texting my mom like crazy.

"You set me up with Leon Williamson? Are we seriously at the level where we can marry into his family now? Have you been secretly getting rich behind my back?"

My mom replied instantly with a question mark. "What? What are you talking about? Are you daydreaming in broad daylight? We set you up with Leon’s distant nephew. Did your aunt not explain that properly?"

I glanced at the man sitting across from me, smiling calmly.

Could there really be two faces like his in the world?

When our eyes met, I couldn’t pretend to be busy anymore. I had no choice but to speak, a little awkwardly.

"Um… Excuse me, are you… Mr. Leon Williamson?"

He nodded, then gave an apologetic smile.

A colleague beside me couldn’t help but speak up, "Ava, the meal hasn’t even started yet. You shouldn’t be drinking like that…"I ignored him. After steadying myself, I picked up the second glass I’d just poured and drained it in one go.I wasn’t much of a drinker to begin with. Having two potent drinks back-to-back amplified the effect even more intensely. When I opened my eyes again, my vision had doubled.I turned my gaze toward Leon and found him looking at me, too. His expression was complicated, but I couldn’t make it out clearly. As my consciousness began to slip and I sensed him starting to look away, the word escaped my lips before I could stop it."Hubby…"The entire private room plunged into an immediate, heavy silence. Everything stood perfectly still. One of the more obnoxious coworkers was the first to react, laughing. "Wow, Ava, you’re so obsessed with Mr. Sheppard that you’ve gone crazy, huh?"Only then did scattered laughter start to ripple around the room.B

"Which friends?""Just old coworkers. You don’t know them.""Not a single one I know?""None," I denied decisively.Leon stared at me for a long moment. "Alright." Then he turned and left.I felt a twinge of guilt about keeping secrets, but the history of my long-standing crush on someone else made the idea of mentioning this dinner to my husband feel incredibly awkward.I convinced myself it wouldn't matter. Brogan might not even attend, and even if he did, it was just one meal—a quick affair that would be over before I knew it.At least, that was what I thought. When I reached the restaurant Megan had suggested, the sight of Leon's car stopped me cold. My first instinct was to run, but it was like the car had been waiting for me.As the window slid down to reveal Leon, our eyes met, and I felt a sinking realization that I was in deep trouble."Wifey," he said, his voice carrying a sharp, chilly edge, "are you here for a meal with friends as well?"I wiped imaginary sweat o

It seemed as though things were finally moving toward the inevitable next chapter.Just as my imagination began to wander, Leon returned. He slipped his arms around my waist from behind, looking around the revamped bedroom with a satisfied smile. "It finally feels like a real home," he murmured.I gripped his hand but found myself unable to find the words to reply. His intuition kicked in immediately. "Ava, is something the matter? Your face is flushed."Embarrassed, I slammed the closet door shut and shielded my face. "It's just... a bit warm in here."Leon scrutinized me for a beat before a flash of realization crossed his features. A playful smirk tugged at his lips as he teased, "Are you feeling shy, wifey? Is it because we're officially living together now?"Startled, I lunged forward to press my hand over his mouth. "Who gave you permission to say that?"Leon simply quirked an eyebrow, leaning down to press a soft kiss against my palm. "If you’re this shy now, what are you

"How long are we keeping it a secret? From everyone?"I thought for a moment. "How about a month? No telling anyone. Okay?"Leon pressed his lips together, head lowered, fists clenched slightly, as if trying to convince himself.I waited patiently for two minutes until he managed to convince himself."Alright."Looking at his slightly aggrieved expression, I almost laughed. Who exactly started the rumor that Leon was cold and ruthless? This man was clearly so obedient.I stood on my toes and ruffled his hair. "Good boy… husband."Leon’s face flushed instantly. "What did you just call me?"I blinked. "Husband."His face turned even redder, and he lowered his head, trying to hide it. "Oh…"I deliberately teased him. "Then what should you call me?"Leon glanced around, cheeks still flushed, then leaned in close to my ear and spoke softly, "Wife."His warm breath brushed against my ear, sending a tingling sensation through me. It felt… nice."I didn’t hear that. Say it again."

Leon frowned, casting a skeptical glance my way. "Is this still a dream?" he asked. Without waiting for an answer, he rolled over and flopped back onto the bed, shielding his eyes with one arm and letting out a heavy sigh. "Never mind."I reached down and gave his cheek a firm pinch. "No dream, Leon. Wake up. We are actually getting married."The tension in his brow eased halfway. As I applied a little more pressure, his frown disappeared completely. He shot upright in one swift motion."Did that hurt?"He stared at me in bewilderment, then pinched his own thigh, muttering to himself, "It's n-not a dream…"I smiled at him. "Right. Not a dream. Now, if you still want to marry me, you’d better start getting ready."Leon looked completely stunned. He obediently washed himself up and took something for the hangover. He sat across from me, still dazed. "What changed your mind overnight?"I let out a small sigh. "Because someone’s been secretly in love with me for years and never said

"Then, don’t you think it’s normal for her to hesitate when you jump straight to proposing marriage?"Leon sounded like he was on the verge of tears. "But she used to say all the time she wanted to marry that guy, so why is it different with me?"And if I hadn’t had someone send her that video of Brogan losing his mind, she wouldn’t have even come to the blind date…"Maybe she’s just using me to distract herself. If I don’t use marriage to keep her by my side, she might disappear one day… just like yesterday, when she ran into him again…"Seven years, man. I have to take this chance!"I froze in shock.Leon was the one who sent that anonymous video? The other man fell silent for a long moment. "Is that why you were dead to the world last night? I called you fifty times and couldn't wake you. You practically polished off half the bar. All this because she hasn't given you an answer yet?"Leon didn’t respond. He just sat there, quietly sobbing. The other man sounded both exasper
