Chapter 1

Author: Washing Wheat
It was no secret that I liked Brogan Sheppard.

When I went to deliver some documents, I heard voices inside the office.

"She’s basically a rich girl, lowering herself to be your assistant. You really don’t care?"

Brogan clicked his tongue. "She insisted on coming. What was I supposed to do?"

Someone nearby laughed. "True. She’s always liked sticking close to you. After all these years, nothing’s changed."

"So, Brogan, you're not planning to get together with her? She probably dreams about being with you every night. Last time her family set her up on a blind date, you called us out for drinks late at night. I thought you actually cared."

The moment that sentence landed, Brogan’s mood shifted. His voice turned ice-cold. "She’s just a clingy nuisance. Why would I care?"

Outside the door, my hand froze mid-knock, then slowly lowered. Instead, I grabbed the handle and pushed the door open.

Everyone inside paused for a second at my sudden entrance for just a second. Then they went right back to their usual teasing smiles.

"Ava, bringing breakfast for Brogan again?"

Like clockwork, every single day, Brogan didn’t even look up, as if he’d already expected me to show up. He just tipped his chin lazily toward the desk. "Put it there."

I shook my head, then placed the documents—and my resignation letter—on the table together.

"It’s not breakfast. It’s my resignation. Mr. Sheppard, please review it."

The room went silent.

A few of them rushed over, bending down to read the letter. When they saw the words clearly, their expressions shifted to disbelief.

"Wait, Ava, you’re serious?" Brogan finally looked up, frowning. His gaze landed on me. "What’s this supposed to be?"

I nudged the resignation letter closer to him. "I’m resigning. I’ve emailed you the digital copy too. Don’t forget to check it."

Brogan glanced at the letter, irritation creeping into his voice. "Is this because I made you stay late yesterday?"

I shook my head. "No. I just don’t want to do this anymore."

His expression darkened, inch by inch. Just as I turned to leave, he called out, "Ava, if you walk out now, don’t expect to ever come back to my side." It sounded like a threat or maybe a warning.

I didn’t even turn around. "I wouldn’t want to."

The atmosphere in the room instantly dropped to freezing.

As I pushed the door open and stepped out, I heard cautious voices behind me.

"Brogan, she’s just throwing a rich-girl tantrum. Don’t take it seriously…"

"Yeah, you know how much she likes you. She’ll probably regret it by this afternoon and come running back…"

Brogan stared at the closed door, then let out a cold laugh. "Who cares?"

I cleared out everything from my desk. In the end, there was nothing left. Looking at the empty workspace, I almost laughed.

Then my mind drifted back to last night. When I’d been stuck at the office working overtime, I received an anonymous video.

In a dim, neon-lit private room, Brogan had his arm around a stunning woman, listening lazily as people around him talked.

"So Ava’s still playing the obedient worker bee at your company right now?"

"What did you expect? Brogan’s got his ways. Despite being a rich girl, she hasn’t shown up to any of our gatherings in ages."

A colleague beside me couldn’t help but speak up, "Ava, the meal hasn’t even started yet. You shouldn’t be drinking like that…"I ignored him. After steadying myself, I picked up the second glass I’d just poured and drained it in one go.I wasn’t much of a drinker to begin with. Having two potent drinks back-to-back amplified the effect even more intensely. When I opened my eyes again, my vision had doubled.I turned my gaze toward Leon and found him looking at me, too. His expression was complicated, but I couldn’t make it out clearly. As my consciousness began to slip and I sensed him starting to look away, the word escaped my lips before I could stop it."Hubby…"The entire private room plunged into an immediate, heavy silence. Everything stood perfectly still. One of the more obnoxious coworkers was the first to react, laughing. "Wow, Ava, you’re so obsessed with Mr. Sheppard that you’ve gone crazy, huh?"Only then did scattered laughter start to ripple around the room.B

"Which friends?""Just old coworkers. You don’t know them.""Not a single one I know?""None," I denied decisively.Leon stared at me for a long moment. "Alright." Then he turned and left.I felt a twinge of guilt about keeping secrets, but the history of my long-standing crush on someone else made the idea of mentioning this dinner to my husband feel incredibly awkward.I convinced myself it wouldn't matter. Brogan might not even attend, and even if he did, it was just one meal—a quick affair that would be over before I knew it.At least, that was what I thought. When I reached the restaurant Megan had suggested, the sight of Leon's car stopped me cold. My first instinct was to run, but it was like the car had been waiting for me.As the window slid down to reveal Leon, our eyes met, and I felt a sinking realization that I was in deep trouble."Wifey," he said, his voice carrying a sharp, chilly edge, "are you here for a meal with friends as well?"I wiped imaginary sweat o

It seemed as though things were finally moving toward the inevitable next chapter.Just as my imagination began to wander, Leon returned. He slipped his arms around my waist from behind, looking around the revamped bedroom with a satisfied smile. "It finally feels like a real home," he murmured.I gripped his hand but found myself unable to find the words to reply. His intuition kicked in immediately. "Ava, is something the matter? Your face is flushed."Embarrassed, I slammed the closet door shut and shielded my face. "It's just... a bit warm in here."Leon scrutinized me for a beat before a flash of realization crossed his features. A playful smirk tugged at his lips as he teased, "Are you feeling shy, wifey? Is it because we're officially living together now?"Startled, I lunged forward to press my hand over his mouth. "Who gave you permission to say that?"Leon simply quirked an eyebrow, leaning down to press a soft kiss against my palm. "If you’re this shy now, what are you

"How long are we keeping it a secret? From everyone?"I thought for a moment. "How about a month? No telling anyone. Okay?"Leon pressed his lips together, head lowered, fists clenched slightly, as if trying to convince himself.I waited patiently for two minutes until he managed to convince himself."Alright."Looking at his slightly aggrieved expression, I almost laughed. Who exactly started the rumor that Leon was cold and ruthless? This man was clearly so obedient.I stood on my toes and ruffled his hair. "Good boy… husband."Leon’s face flushed instantly. "What did you just call me?"I blinked. "Husband."His face turned even redder, and he lowered his head, trying to hide it. "Oh…"I deliberately teased him. "Then what should you call me?"Leon glanced around, cheeks still flushed, then leaned in close to my ear and spoke softly, "Wife."His warm breath brushed against my ear, sending a tingling sensation through me. It felt… nice."I didn’t hear that. Say it again."

Leon frowned, casting a skeptical glance my way. "Is this still a dream?" he asked. Without waiting for an answer, he rolled over and flopped back onto the bed, shielding his eyes with one arm and letting out a heavy sigh. "Never mind."I reached down and gave his cheek a firm pinch. "No dream, Leon. Wake up. We are actually getting married."The tension in his brow eased halfway. As I applied a little more pressure, his frown disappeared completely. He shot upright in one swift motion."Did that hurt?"He stared at me in bewilderment, then pinched his own thigh, muttering to himself, "It's n-not a dream…"I smiled at him. "Right. Not a dream. Now, if you still want to marry me, you’d better start getting ready."Leon looked completely stunned. He obediently washed himself up and took something for the hangover. He sat across from me, still dazed. "What changed your mind overnight?"I let out a small sigh. "Because someone’s been secretly in love with me for years and never said

  • Claimed in Public   Chapter 9

"Then, don’t you think it’s normal for her to hesitate when you jump straight to proposing marriage?"Leon sounded like he was on the verge of tears. "But she used to say all the time she wanted to marry that guy, so why is it different with me?"And if I hadn’t had someone send her that video of Brogan losing his mind, she wouldn’t have even come to the blind date…"Maybe she’s just using me to distract herself. If I don’t use marriage to keep her by my side, she might disappear one day… just like yesterday, when she ran into him again…"Seven years, man. I have to take this chance!"I froze in shock.Leon was the one who sent that anonymous video? The other man fell silent for a long moment. "Is that why you were dead to the world last night? I called you fifty times and couldn't wake you. You practically polished off half the bar. All this because she hasn't given you an answer yet?"Leon didn’t respond. He just sat there, quietly sobbing. The other man sounded both exasper
