Chapter 4

Author: Washing Wheat
I rubbed the bridge of my nose. "But… aren’t your conditions even better?"

Leon paused for a rare two seconds, then looked straight into my eyes. "Do you think I’m good?"

I froze and swallowed instinctively. I glanced at the table in front of me. Every single dish was perfectly tailored to my taste, clearly chosen with care.

I’d actually wanted to comment on it earlier. I’d only asked him out late last night, and he had already figured out my food preferences in such detail the next day.

At the very least, as a blind date, he was incredibly sincere. The way he treated people was nothing like the cold, ruthless rumors. On top of that, everything about him, from his background to his capabilities, left no doubt that he was a spectacular catch.

I hesitated for a moment. "You… You’re great."

Leon visibly brightened, lowering his head with a quiet laugh. He pushed the booklet toward me again. "Well, want to give it a try with me?"

I knew he meant marriage.

My first instinct was to retreat. This wasn’t even something that had ever appeared in my life plan, but the sincerity in Leon’s emotions was impossible to ignore. I wanted to be honest, too.

"We can try getting to know each other first. Heading straight into marriage… isn’t that a little too soon?"

At my answer, a flicker of dimness passed through his eyes, but it was gone almost instantly.

He nodded obediently. "Okay. We’ll go at your pace."

After the meal, Leon had his assistant arrange a driver to send me home.

On the way, I overheard part of a conversation between him and his assistant. Only then did I realize that at the exact time I had asked him out, he had originally been scheduled for an important international meeting.

Guilt hit me immediately.

"Did I make you miss your meeting? I’m sorry, I didn’t know…"

Leon waved it off, reassuring me. "It’s nothing. Meetings can happen anytime."

Even though everything about his tone and expression told me it wasn’t a big deal, I still felt bad.

Noticing my somber mood, Leon leaned in unexpectedly. He brought his face close to mine, his eyes blinking softly. "Anyway," he murmured, "no meeting matters more than finding a wife. It isn't every day that you ask me out."

He was so near that I could track the slight flutter of his long eyelashes.

In those stunning eyes, I saw nothing but my own reflection staring back.

My pulse quickened, the sound of my own heart loud in my ears.

"Leon…" I breathed.

Perhaps he sensed my agitation, for a faint crimson flush began to creep across the tips of his ears.

Gently, he retreated, creating a respectful distance between us once more.

"Ahem… I should get back to work."

The goodbye was rushed. When he turned and walked away with his long strides, his steps looked a little… unsteady.

I watched his back as the car window slowly rolled up. Somehow, I felt a quiet kind of happiness, like I actually liked being around Leon.

It wasn’t until evening that Leon finally seemed to be done with work and messaged me. It was a photo of a bright full moon, clearly taken just moments ago.

I replied quickly: "That’s beautiful."

He replied even faster. "Yeah. It made me think of you."

Think of me?

My face warmed.

"You always this smooth?"

He replied like an honest man, "I just said what I thought. Does that count as flirting?"

This guy…

How did he always maintain a serious expression while saying things that made my heart race?

I was still thinking about how to respond when another message popped up.

"Are you free for dinner tomorrow?"

I didn’t hesitate at all.

A colleague beside me couldn’t help but speak up, "Ava, the meal hasn’t even started yet. You shouldn’t be drinking like that…"I ignored him. After steadying myself, I picked up the second glass I’d just poured and drained it in one go.I wasn’t much of a drinker to begin with. Having two potent drinks back-to-back amplified the effect even more intensely. When I opened my eyes again, my vision had doubled.I turned my gaze toward Leon and found him looking at me, too. His expression was complicated, but I couldn’t make it out clearly. As my consciousness began to slip and I sensed him starting to look away, the word escaped my lips before I could stop it."Hubby…"The entire private room plunged into an immediate, heavy silence. Everything stood perfectly still. One of the more obnoxious coworkers was the first to react, laughing. "Wow, Ava, you’re so obsessed with Mr. Sheppard that you’ve gone crazy, huh?"Only then did scattered laughter start to ripple around the room.B

"Which friends?""Just old coworkers. You don’t know them.""Not a single one I know?""None," I denied decisively.Leon stared at me for a long moment. "Alright." Then he turned and left.I felt a twinge of guilt about keeping secrets, but the history of my long-standing crush on someone else made the idea of mentioning this dinner to my husband feel incredibly awkward.I convinced myself it wouldn't matter. Brogan might not even attend, and even if he did, it was just one meal—a quick affair that would be over before I knew it.At least, that was what I thought. When I reached the restaurant Megan had suggested, the sight of Leon's car stopped me cold. My first instinct was to run, but it was like the car had been waiting for me.As the window slid down to reveal Leon, our eyes met, and I felt a sinking realization that I was in deep trouble."Wifey," he said, his voice carrying a sharp, chilly edge, "are you here for a meal with friends as well?"I wiped imaginary sweat o

It seemed as though things were finally moving toward the inevitable next chapter.Just as my imagination began to wander, Leon returned. He slipped his arms around my waist from behind, looking around the revamped bedroom with a satisfied smile. "It finally feels like a real home," he murmured.I gripped his hand but found myself unable to find the words to reply. His intuition kicked in immediately. "Ava, is something the matter? Your face is flushed."Embarrassed, I slammed the closet door shut and shielded my face. "It's just... a bit warm in here."Leon scrutinized me for a beat before a flash of realization crossed his features. A playful smirk tugged at his lips as he teased, "Are you feeling shy, wifey? Is it because we're officially living together now?"Startled, I lunged forward to press my hand over his mouth. "Who gave you permission to say that?"Leon simply quirked an eyebrow, leaning down to press a soft kiss against my palm. "If you’re this shy now, what are you

"How long are we keeping it a secret? From everyone?"I thought for a moment. "How about a month? No telling anyone. Okay?"Leon pressed his lips together, head lowered, fists clenched slightly, as if trying to convince himself.I waited patiently for two minutes until he managed to convince himself."Alright."Looking at his slightly aggrieved expression, I almost laughed. Who exactly started the rumor that Leon was cold and ruthless? This man was clearly so obedient.I stood on my toes and ruffled his hair. "Good boy… husband."Leon’s face flushed instantly. "What did you just call me?"I blinked. "Husband."His face turned even redder, and he lowered his head, trying to hide it. "Oh…"I deliberately teased him. "Then what should you call me?"Leon glanced around, cheeks still flushed, then leaned in close to my ear and spoke softly, "Wife."His warm breath brushed against my ear, sending a tingling sensation through me. It felt… nice."I didn’t hear that. Say it again."

Leon frowned, casting a skeptical glance my way. "Is this still a dream?" he asked. Without waiting for an answer, he rolled over and flopped back onto the bed, shielding his eyes with one arm and letting out a heavy sigh. "Never mind."I reached down and gave his cheek a firm pinch. "No dream, Leon. Wake up. We are actually getting married."The tension in his brow eased halfway. As I applied a little more pressure, his frown disappeared completely. He shot upright in one swift motion."Did that hurt?"He stared at me in bewilderment, then pinched his own thigh, muttering to himself, "It's n-not a dream…"I smiled at him. "Right. Not a dream. Now, if you still want to marry me, you’d better start getting ready."Leon looked completely stunned. He obediently washed himself up and took something for the hangover. He sat across from me, still dazed. "What changed your mind overnight?"I let out a small sigh. "Because someone’s been secretly in love with me for years and never said

"Then, don’t you think it’s normal for her to hesitate when you jump straight to proposing marriage?"Leon sounded like he was on the verge of tears. "But she used to say all the time she wanted to marry that guy, so why is it different with me?"And if I hadn’t had someone send her that video of Brogan losing his mind, she wouldn’t have even come to the blind date…"Maybe she’s just using me to distract herself. If I don’t use marriage to keep her by my side, she might disappear one day… just like yesterday, when she ran into him again…"Seven years, man. I have to take this chance!"I froze in shock.Leon was the one who sent that anonymous video? The other man fell silent for a long moment. "Is that why you were dead to the world last night? I called you fifty times and couldn't wake you. You practically polished off half the bar. All this because she hasn't given you an answer yet?"Leon didn’t respond. He just sat there, quietly sobbing. The other man sounded both exasper
