Chapter 5

Author: Washing Wheat
"Yeah, I am."

Leon never hesitated to take the initiative.

During the following days, he and I shared every meal. On the occasions when his schedule permitted, he would accompany me while I shopped after we ate. Having him by my side drew a significant amount of attention from passersby.

Following our outings, he would never fail to escort me back home. As if by some sleight of hand, he would always reveal a present from within his vehicle.

The gifts varied. At times, he presented me with rare, limited-edition handbags. On other occasions, it was exquisite jewelry of immense value, sourced from high-end auctions.

Initially, I was hesitant to receive such lavish items.

However, his demeanor became remarkably solemn. "Miss Bennett, if we’re in the stage of getting to know each other, then that means I’m pursuing you.

"Giving gifts or anything else is simply part of the cost I should bear. Plus, it’s all well within what I can afford. If you don’t accept them, I’ll take it as you refusing to continue seeing me."

As he said that, he lowered his gaze slightly. "Or… is that what you mean?"

The look of disappointment on his face left me completely speechless.

Ultimately, I was left with no other option but to take the shopping bags home with me.

As the days passed, I began to feel as though I was being buried under his wealth. The constant stream of his generosity started to make me feel quite uncomfortable.

To return the favor, I arrived at a department store well before our dinner one afternoon, intent on finding a gift for him in return.

However, after a lengthy search through the aisles, I realized there wasn’t a single practical item that Leon seemed to actually require. I finally settled on a versatile tie from a brand he frequently wore.

Just as I was paying and having it wrapped, a familiar scoff came from behind me.

"Ava, finally done throwing your tantrum?"

My body stiffened instantly because I knew that voice.

Brogan Sheppard.

I turned around. Brogan and a few of his friends were standing at the store entrance, looking at me with lazy amusement. I didn’t spare him a second glance. I turned back and continued waiting for the staff to finish wrapping.

However, his friends had no intention of letting it go.

"Shopping, Ava? That’s a man’s tie. Picking something out for Brogan?"

"That style totally matches the suit he’s wearing today. You really put thought into it!"

"But after all that fuss, Brogan’s actually pretty annoyed. One tie might not be enough to smooth things over…"

Amid the chatter, Brogan let out a low scoff. "Who said I need a tie? But if you apologize properly, I can give you a way out."

His voice made my stomach turn.

I didn’t even look at him. "I’ve already resigned. I'm Ava Bennett, not your assistant. And this isn’t for Brogan. Can you stop making everything about yourselves?"

As soon as I said that, the smug smiles on their faces slowly faded.

Brogan’s expression darkened, too. He stared at me for a long moment. "You’re still not done with this act? That’s enough, Ava. I don’t have that much patience."

Then he glanced at the neatly wrapped tie in the clerk’s hands, a mocking edge in his tone as he remarked, "A man’s tie… Who else could you possibly be giving it to?"

I paid, took the gift, and turned to leave. "For my blind date. Got a problem with that?"

Brogan’s eyes narrowed. "Didn’t you say you weren’t going?"

I kept walking, the gift bag in hand. "I changed my mind."

His voice dropped instantly. "Who is it?"

I paused for a second, then chose to tell the truth.

"Leon Williamson."

The moment that name, which was so well-known in our circle, left my mouth, the group fell into a noticeable silence.

A colleague beside me couldn’t help but speak up, "Ava, the meal hasn’t even started yet. You shouldn’t be drinking like that…"I ignored him. After steadying myself, I picked up the second glass I’d just poured and drained it in one go.I wasn’t much of a drinker to begin with. Having two potent drinks back-to-back amplified the effect even more intensely. When I opened my eyes again, my vision had doubled.I turned my gaze toward Leon and found him looking at me, too. His expression was complicated, but I couldn’t make it out clearly. As my consciousness began to slip and I sensed him starting to look away, the word escaped my lips before I could stop it."Hubby…"The entire private room plunged into an immediate, heavy silence. Everything stood perfectly still. One of the more obnoxious coworkers was the first to react, laughing. "Wow, Ava, you’re so obsessed with Mr. Sheppard that you’ve gone crazy, huh?"Only then did scattered laughter start to ripple around the room.B

"Which friends?""Just old coworkers. You don’t know them.""Not a single one I know?""None," I denied decisively.Leon stared at me for a long moment. "Alright." Then he turned and left.I felt a twinge of guilt about keeping secrets, but the history of my long-standing crush on someone else made the idea of mentioning this dinner to my husband feel incredibly awkward.I convinced myself it wouldn't matter. Brogan might not even attend, and even if he did, it was just one meal—a quick affair that would be over before I knew it.At least, that was what I thought. When I reached the restaurant Megan had suggested, the sight of Leon's car stopped me cold. My first instinct was to run, but it was like the car had been waiting for me.As the window slid down to reveal Leon, our eyes met, and I felt a sinking realization that I was in deep trouble."Wifey," he said, his voice carrying a sharp, chilly edge, "are you here for a meal with friends as well?"I wiped imaginary sweat o

It seemed as though things were finally moving toward the inevitable next chapter.Just as my imagination began to wander, Leon returned. He slipped his arms around my waist from behind, looking around the revamped bedroom with a satisfied smile. "It finally feels like a real home," he murmured.I gripped his hand but found myself unable to find the words to reply. His intuition kicked in immediately. "Ava, is something the matter? Your face is flushed."Embarrassed, I slammed the closet door shut and shielded my face. "It's just... a bit warm in here."Leon scrutinized me for a beat before a flash of realization crossed his features. A playful smirk tugged at his lips as he teased, "Are you feeling shy, wifey? Is it because we're officially living together now?"Startled, I lunged forward to press my hand over his mouth. "Who gave you permission to say that?"Leon simply quirked an eyebrow, leaning down to press a soft kiss against my palm. "If you’re this shy now, what are you

"How long are we keeping it a secret? From everyone?"I thought for a moment. "How about a month? No telling anyone. Okay?"Leon pressed his lips together, head lowered, fists clenched slightly, as if trying to convince himself.I waited patiently for two minutes until he managed to convince himself."Alright."Looking at his slightly aggrieved expression, I almost laughed. Who exactly started the rumor that Leon was cold and ruthless? This man was clearly so obedient.I stood on my toes and ruffled his hair. "Good boy… husband."Leon’s face flushed instantly. "What did you just call me?"I blinked. "Husband."His face turned even redder, and he lowered his head, trying to hide it. "Oh…"I deliberately teased him. "Then what should you call me?"Leon glanced around, cheeks still flushed, then leaned in close to my ear and spoke softly, "Wife."His warm breath brushed against my ear, sending a tingling sensation through me. It felt… nice."I didn’t hear that. Say it again."

Leon frowned, casting a skeptical glance my way. "Is this still a dream?" he asked. Without waiting for an answer, he rolled over and flopped back onto the bed, shielding his eyes with one arm and letting out a heavy sigh. "Never mind."I reached down and gave his cheek a firm pinch. "No dream, Leon. Wake up. We are actually getting married."The tension in his brow eased halfway. As I applied a little more pressure, his frown disappeared completely. He shot upright in one swift motion."Did that hurt?"He stared at me in bewilderment, then pinched his own thigh, muttering to himself, "It's n-not a dream…"I smiled at him. "Right. Not a dream. Now, if you still want to marry me, you’d better start getting ready."Leon looked completely stunned. He obediently washed himself up and took something for the hangover. He sat across from me, still dazed. "What changed your mind overnight?"I let out a small sigh. "Because someone’s been secretly in love with me for years and never said

"Then, don’t you think it’s normal for her to hesitate when you jump straight to proposing marriage?"Leon sounded like he was on the verge of tears. "But she used to say all the time she wanted to marry that guy, so why is it different with me?"And if I hadn’t had someone send her that video of Brogan losing his mind, she wouldn’t have even come to the blind date…"Maybe she’s just using me to distract herself. If I don’t use marriage to keep her by my side, she might disappear one day… just like yesterday, when she ran into him again…"Seven years, man. I have to take this chance!"I froze in shock.Leon was the one who sent that anonymous video? The other man fell silent for a long moment. "Is that why you were dead to the world last night? I called you fifty times and couldn't wake you. You practically polished off half the bar. All this because she hasn't given you an answer yet?"Leon didn’t respond. He just sat there, quietly sobbing. The other man sounded both exasper
