Skyler's POV

The moment Theo Yorkson took the thermal gear, his eyes reddened slightly. He looked up at my girlfriend, Amber Garcia, sounding rather embarrassed.

"Amber, you really want me to have this? But, Skyler… He—"

As he spoke, he glanced at me awkwardly. Amber waved a hand, clearly unconcerned.

"He's climbed three mountains over 13 thousand feet. His stamina is much better than yours. It's your first time at high altitude, so you need to be looked after."

Theo pressed his lips together and hugged the gear to his chest. He lowered his head and murmured, "Thanks, Amber."

A note of delight peeked through his voice.

One of our guides, Mike Marlowe, glanced at me from the side. He wanted to say something but couldn't bring himself to.

I rummaged through my duffel bag and pulled out a spare heat patch. I tore it open and stuck it to my stomach. It wasn't enough to keep me warm, but it would have to do.

Amber and Theo stood outside Theo's tent for a long time. She bent down to help him put on his gear, then patiently taught him how to adjust each strap and buckle.

He listened with his head tilted up, nodding eagerly now and then. The admiration and dependence in his eyes were impossible to miss.

From a distance, they looked like a picture-perfect couple. Except I wasn't in the picture.

The satellite phone rang. My friend, Charlie Jameson, was practically screaming into the phone.

"Skyler, you asked me to get that gear for you from Ritzland! You wouldn't even use it yourself! How could she just hand it to someone else?"

"Charlie, calm down."

"Calm down? I'm pissed!"

He lowered his voice, exasperated. "Didn't you two have a plan? You two were supposed to propose to each other at the summit. If it works out, you two would hold the engagement party when you come back.

"Now look at this! One junior teammate comes clinging to her, and she's handing him your gear like it's nothing! Is she proposing to you at the summit, or to Theo?"

I leaned against the tent frame and gazed at the snow peaks in the distance. The night was dark, the wind bitterly cold, but the moonlight made the peaks gleam against the sky.

"Charlie," I said softly.

"Yeah?"

"She knows what she's doing. She's just soft-hearted. You know that."

He fell silent for two seconds, but his anger didn't subside. "Skyler, stop making excuses for her. Let me ask you this—whose idea was it for Theo to come on this climb?"

I said nothing. Of course, it had been Amber's idea.

Two months ago, when she and I first planned the climb, everything had been perfect. We picked the route and ordered our gear. She had even secretly written out what she would say when she proposed.

She had drafted it three times, filling page after page with words, crossing each version out and starting over. That night, I stared at the piece of paper until my eyes grew hot.

She rushed in, flustered, asking what was wrong. I hid the paper behind my back and told her the wind stung my eyes. She believed me.

Things changed a month ago.

Theo was transferred from another city to Amber's research institute. His advisor said he needed her guidance for a research project and sent him over without giving her much choice.

Theo was 23, fresh out of university, soft-spoken and bookish, with a pair of glasses perched on his nose. Whenever he ran into trouble, he would call out to Amber for help, as if it were natural.

To be fair, Amber also went to extra lengths for him. She stayed up late helping him revise his papers, took him out to collect data, and even brought an extra serving back from the cafeteria at lunch.

I once asked, "Don't you think you're a little too nice to Theo?"

She laughed and playfully punched my shoulder. "He's just a rookie. Are you seriously jealous?"

Later, she told me Theo had always wanted to see a snow mountain and asked if he could tag along.

"Well, think of it as having one more companion. He just had a falling-out with his family and could use a little time to get away and recharge."

I agreed. I thought I was being generous. I thought this trip would still, in the end, belong to the two of us.

My tent zipper was pulled open from outside, and Amber poked her head in. Her face was flushed from the wind, the tip of her nose just as red. Each breath came out as a cloud of white vapor in the darkness.

"Why aren't you asleep yet?"

She ducked inside and sat beside me. I slipped the satellite phone into my sleeping bag.

"I'm too excited to sleep."

She smiled and rested her head lightly against my shoulder. "Tomorrow, we push for Camp Three. If the weather holds, we'll go for the summit the day after. When we reach the summit…"

Her voice turned gentle. "There's something I want to tell you."

My heart skipped a beat. "What?"

"You'll find out when we get there."

Outside the tent, the wind howled like the entire mountain was crying out into the night. I slipped an arm around Amber's shoulders.

At that moment, the whole world felt warm.

Skyler's POVAmber never appeared in my life again. Charlie told me she had quit her job at the research institute and left the city. No one knew where she went. Some said the desert. Others said the mountains. Wherever it was, it was somewhere remote and desolate.Theo also left. He went back to his hometown and got married. He probably still didn't know the full story of what happened. Maybe he did, but chose not to face it.It didn't matter anymore. Those people and those memories came and went like an avalanche. They came into my life with a force that shook everything, then disappeared beneath layers of ice so deep no one could ever reach them.I stayed in the city. I took photographs, retouched them, picked up the occasional commercial project, and sometimes held solo exhibitions.I moved my studio once, from downtown to an industrial park on the outskirts. It was three times the size, and the rent was half as much. There was a grove outside the window. During fall, the l

Skyler's POVThree months later, my outdoor photography collection was chosen for a citywide photography exhibition. The gallery was in the heart of downtown, busy with visitors coming and going.Charlie arrived early to help me set everything up. He was running back and forth, more nervous than I was. "Skyler, that photo of the snow mountain is hanging too far to the side!""It's fine, Charlie.""No! I'm getting the staff to reposition it!"I stopped him, laughing as I pressed a hand to his shoulder. "That's enough. Stop fussing."Tracy came, too. She stood quietly in a corner of the gallery, looking at the photographs on the walls. The one in front of her was the northern lights I had photographed in Nordvik.Bands of emerald light stretched across the night sky, while an endless white snowfield lay beneath them. She stared at it for a long time.By 3:00 pm, the gallery was getting crowded. I was talking to one of the curators when a figure at the entrance caught my eye.Amb

Skyler's POVA month later, I returned home from Nordvik. The frostbite on my fingers had mostly healed, and a new layer of skin had grown over the one on my left foot. The biggest change wasn't physical. It was the crevasse in my heart. It had finally closed.I did three things after coming back.First, I changed my phone number. Second, I moved. I left the apartment in the same part of the city where Amber and I had lived and moved to the other side of town.Third, I went back to work and buried myself in it.The first time Charlie saw me, he looked me up and down for a long while before sighing in relief. "Good. There's light in your eyes again."I landed a commercial photography project for a major outdoor brand. Our team worked overtime for two straight months.Every day, I stayed in the studio retouching photos until the early hours. When I got too tired, I would put my head down on the desk and sleep for a while.I was so busy I didn't have time to think about anything

Third-Person POVIt had been 20 days since Amber last heard from Skyler. Whenever she called, she got the same automated message. "The number you have dialed has been barred by the recipient."Her messages only ever came back with a red exclamation mark.Amber sat on the living room couch, staring at her phone screen, her finger hovering over it for a long time. Then, irritated, she tossed the phone aside. She stood up, only to pace back and forth across the room. She was upset that Skyler wouldn't answer her calls or give her a chance to explain. He had left without saying anything to her.She knew she was wrong. She shouldn't have taken his bivy blanket and climbing rope and given them to Theo. But everything had happened so fast. She had to make a choice.Skyler just happened to be the fittest man she had ever known. He had climbed three mountains above 13 thousand feet, and every time they did a fitness test, he left her far behind. She genuinely believed he could make it.

Skyler's POV186 miles north of the Arctic Circle was Tromgen, Nordvik. When the plane landed, infinite stretches of snow spread out beyond the window. But the snow here was different from the snow on that mountain. Here, it blanketed the roofs of little cabins like a thick, warm thick blanket.Tracy rented two small cabins facing the fjord, with a little path between them. She didn't stay in my cabin or make any effort to get closer.Every morning, she left breakfast outside my door, knocked twice, and left."Don't you need to work?" I asked her."I'm on a break. Every winter, I take a month off.""Do you come here every year?""Mm-hm. It's peaceful here."That was just the kind of person Tracy was. She didn't say much or do much. She simply stayed there in silence, like a rock that never moved. For the first few days, I didn't want to do anything. I curled up on the cabin rug under a blanket, watching the snow fall outside layer by layer. My body was still recovering. Fro

Skyler's POVI spent four days in the hospital. Amber never left my side. She sat in the chair beside my bed. Her eyes were swollen and red, her hair a mess. She looked as though she had aged ten years overnight. She held my hand and wouldn't stop apologizing. "I'm sorry, Skyler. I'm so sorry. I really thought you could make it. I thought the rescue team would arrive within two hours."I made the wrong call. It was my fault. I shouldn't have left you behind…"I never looked at her, not since the moment I woke up. It wasn't that I was deliberately giving her the cold shoulder. I just didn't know how to face her anymore.Should I smile or frown?Amber almost got me killed, yet she was also crying her eyes out for me.The next day, Charlie came to see me. When he pushed open the hospital room door, I saw that his eyes were red. His fingers were trembling, and so did his voice."Skyler…"I smiled at him. "I'm fine."He walked over to my bed and finally let the tears gather in hi
