Third-party POV

Lake scrambled to get up, dizzy from the back of his head hitting the wall, but he didn’t make it to his feet; he was ripped off the ground with such speed that a violent surge of vomit burst from his mouth.

His body lurched, weightless, and he was airborne before he could process what was happening. His eyes widened in sheer shock just as he was hurled into the water with crushing force.

The cold hit him first, then the blur of motion. The Mer King was on him again, giving him no chance to breathe, and Lake barely caught sight of the glowing trident before they plunged deep into the sea, its harsh light cutting through the darkness like a blade.

The ocean floor rushed up to meet them, and Lake’s body hit the sand so hard the impact reverberated through his bones. A thick plume of debris exploded around him... sand, rock, and broken shell fragments spiraling outward like a shattered halo.

His body thrashed violently as he fought to escape. Gills or not, he was drowning

Third-party POVDarian entered the dining room to find his parents seated at the long, coral-carved table, their solemn gazes fixed on him.The air hung heavy, thick with silence and sorrow, and the house still reeked of grief. After Valanthria’s visit, no more words had been spoken. His father had retreated into his chambers and had not emerged since. Darian himself hadn’t gotten a single moment of sleep, his thoughts spinning endlessly.Valanthria’s words echoed in every corner of his mind, implying that he was always meant to rule and that Mira was always meant to be his queen. He hadn’t expected that. But the more he dwelled on her words, the more sense they made. He didn’t know if he loved Mira. She had always been his brother’s intended, and he had never allowed himself to view her as anything else. But he cared for her deeply. She was kind, and he believed that if she were willing, he could learn to love her truly and be a good mate to her. He would never hurt her the way she h

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 161: Welcome

Lake's POV The Alec touched down, and we descended without further ado, finding Jack, our driver, waiting for us.He walked over and embraced me, and I could see he was thrown off by the long hair too, but he’d get used to it. I quickly introduced Kairos, and Jack opened the door for us, and we got into the car.Jack was in his late fifties and had been our driver since I was seven. So he had worked for my family for over a decade, and my entire family was fond of him. He felt the same about us.He started the drive, and as he did, Kairos looked out the window, and it was then that I remembered he had probably never been out of Silverglade. My town wasn’t Silverglade, but it had nice spots and a lot to do. I couldn’t wait to show him around. As we drove through the city, I couldn’t help pointing things out to Kairos. He pressed up against the window like an excited kid, eyes wide with wonder. Every tall building, every passing bus, and even the flashing billboards made him grin.“Tha

Lake's POV “How is this possible?” my father whispered, looking at Kairos, and I told him. I sat in front of him and explained what Kairos was, and by the time I finished, he was more in awe than afraid, which made me relieved. Then, Kairos shifted back and wrapped the sheet around himself because he had torn his pants, and we didn’t have a spare, as we had fled in the clothes we were wearing.“Is this why you’re here? Did he get discovered?” my dad asked, and I said yes. But we didn’t get discovered by the world like he assumed. I told him Kairos’s father had found out and disapproved of me dating Kairos. My father had heard news about the sea spilling out and the damage, of course, and I explained to him that it was Kairos’s father. He looked at Kairos with a sad expression and then back at me, and I could see that this was still too much for him.Looking back at Kairos, he told him he was sorry his father felt that way, that his world wasn’t as free as ours. He then continued to s

THE FOLLOWING MORNINGLake's POV The sun filtered through the curtains, and I opened my eyes to be met with the golden ones that mirrored my own and always made my heart skip a beat.“Good morning,” I murmured, to which Kairos replied by leaning in and pecking me on the lips.We were in a small motel just outside Silverglade. After leaving the dorm, we drove straight out of the city, and the moment I got to a phone, I called my father and asked him to pick me up.I had not told him about Kairos yet, deciding I would do that in person. I had also asked my father not to tell anyone where I was or that he had heard from me, and to say he was beside himself with worry would be an understatement. He was losing it. He wanted to know what had happened, why I was here and no longer in Silverglade, and why no one could find out where I was. He asked what had happened, and I couldn’t answer all his questions but promised to tell him everything once he arrived.Checking the time, it was just af

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 158: Relieved

Third-party POVThere was a pause after Valanthria's words before the Mer king lost it. He asked, "Why his son?" adding that his son was meant to be king; he was his firstborn. But Valanthria didn’t let the king speak; she rose just as he had done, asking whose son would have been the good choice to sacrifice. The Mer king thought she was making a mistake, asking why Kairos was his first, the one marked king, if he had to be a sacrifice.“Who told you that a firstborn has to be king, my king?” Valanthria asked, causing the king to pivot toward her with a blazing stare.Valanthria asked again before he could say anything. Which son, my king, paid attention to you all the time? And which son did you have to repeatedly say the same thing to before he would comply with your wishes? She shot him a knowing glance, and the king opened his mouth to speak, but his gaze strayed to Darian, who looked back at him.Valanthria closed the gap between her and the Mer king. “You have always known who

Third-party POVThe king stared at his queen, face pale, lips parting in disbelief. He looked toward the palace interior as though expecting this to be a dream until he slowly swam forward. And there she was. Velanthria sat upon a smooth stone bench near their table, legs crossed, her flaming hair suspended in the water like molten threads. She had made herself at home.A bowl of harvested fruit from the southern currents sat untouched on the table until she reached for one: a deep-blue kelpan apple slick with salt and still attached to curling seaweed vines. She raised it to her lips and bit into it with a casual smile, the crunch echoing like a clap in the silence.“The gods needed a messenger,” she said as she chewed slowly, then swallowed. “And I answered.”She set the apple down and rose, bowing to the Mer King.“My King.”Then she sat down while the king continued to stare at her, unmoving, screaming in his head that someone wake him up; he had seen too much. But just then, the
