With the return of his memories, my husband, Trevor Beaumont, recalled that he was the Alpha of a wolf pack. He walked away, leaving me with a ruby necklace as compensation. The jewel shimmered amid my sleep, and a tall, burly man stood before me. The compensation came with a hidden bonus after all. Later, I sent a message to my ex. “Thank you for your necklace. The guy inside comes in handy. “We’re getting married, and since you brought us together, we’d hope you can be the best man.” Trevor drove through the night to our wedding venue, veins popping out of his face as despair swallowed him. “Who the hell put the man inside the ruby?”

Chapter 1

While on a patrol at the farm during a heavy downpour, I rescued Trevor Beaumont. It was love at first sight for him, and we were married soon after.

One day, our little farm was attacked by a pack of wolves. Trevor pulled me behind him, ready to fight until his last breath.

To our surprise, the wolf pack shifted into human forms. They fell to their knees at Trevor’s presence, tears streaming down their faces.

I learned that the husband I had brought home was the Alpha of a wolf pack.

Three years ago, Trevor went missing in the war between werewolves and vampires. Somewhere in between, he became my husband.

We lived by the sun, embracing the simple life on the farm for three years.

Trevor took the elixir that would restore his memories.

He took the time to open his eyes, the warmth in them long gone. All that was left was brutality and indifference.

Trevor apologized to me. “I’m sorry, Rhea Green. My pack needs me. My priority is to assume my Alpha duties.”

I batted my lashes and asked, “Are you coming back? One of the sheep is about to give birth. I can’t keep an eye on all of them by myself.”

Probably due to his presence as a wolf, my sheep flock bent to his will, following his command without question.

With Trevor around, I barely had to lift a finger during the busiest farming seasons.

However, the wolf pack sneered.

“Alpha Beaumont is the Alpha of our pack, and you’re putting him on farm work? This has got to be a joke.”

“The pack has fallen into disorder with the Alpha. You only care about yourself. What about the survival of our pack?”

“You can’t keep him all to yourself while the pack is in danger. Didn’t your parents ever teach you to put the greater good first?”

However, I was an orphan.

There had never been anyone there to show me the way of life.

Trevor could complete the day of labor within sixty seconds anyway. However, he refused to spare me a minute.

I guessed the very livelihood of the entire wolf pack rested solely on his shoulders.

If Trevor were to drop dead, the pack would probably go extinct along with him.

Still, I didn’t voice these doubts.

Dozens of eyes narrowed down on me with malice, as if threatening to pounce and devour me.

“Humans are weak and selfish.”

“She’s trying to claim the Alpha for herself.”

“If the Vampire Lord hadn’t struck Alpha Beaumont, leaving him injured and without his memory, she wouldn’t even have a shot with him.”

I turned to Trevor. The supposed werewolf who had been all over me and begging for my attention just last night spoke icily, “Among my kind, a bond is only formed when the wolf marks his mate in a mating ceremony.

“Without a mark or a mating ceremony, our marriage isn’t recognized.

“You’ve cared for me all these years, so to make it up to you, just tell me what you want.”

The other wolves weren’t having it.

“Alpha Beaumont, she’s just a human. She already got more than she deserved by having you all to herself for three years.”

“I know, right? A mere mortal should be falling at your feet in gratitude. Why are you the one making amends?”

I had done my best to keep my temper in check out of respect for Trevor. However, these savages couldn’t keep their mouths shut.

Before I could give them a piece of my mind, Trevor came forward.

Here I thought he was going to acknowledge all that I had done for him.

I had stayed by his side when he was injured.

While picking herbs to save his life, I nearly lost my life to a venomous snake bite.

At the time, Trevor held my hands, tears welling up in his eyes, promising that he would never let me down for as long as we shall live.

Yet now, I was just a charity case to him. He looked down on me with pity.

“Werewolves live far longer than humans. Three years means nothing to me, but for a human, those years are too valuable to waste. I owe her compensation.”

I stood there, stunned.

Trevor viewed our years together as nothing more than a waste of his time.
