“I’ve been through heartbreak, and I don't desire love. Even if I marry you, I won't give you love.” Lisa stared pointedly at him, “ Are you okay with this, President Joseph?” “Then…Let's sign a one-year contract. If after one year we still don't find ourselves compatible, we break it off.” **** The Heiress, Lisa Morgan came back home after an ultimate betrayal from her husband of three years, but her father wouldn't let her into his home unless she agreed to his condition. “Take over the company and marry Joseph Bronson, or leave and never come back again!” As a woman who only cares about survival right now, her choice was obvious but she never expected the turbulence that came after.
View MoreLisa was about to cause a scene, something she had never thought she would do but found herself in the situation.
Her face remained expressionless with her eyes fixed on the hotel entrance, three seconds later, she checked her phone and a small sneer appeared on the corner of her lips,
“Just about time.” She muttered coldly.
Without another waste of time, she put on her dark shades, picked up the documents next to her, then climbed down from her car, and stood in front of the entrance of the hotel.
She straightened her back, raised her head and the aura of the wealthy heiress which she had kept hidden spread out from all sides. Like a queen she is, Lisa walked in sharply.
The moment Lisa entered the private room, the people who had smiles on their faces and a look of enjoyment stood stunned as they all looked at the strange woman who had walked in like a queen coming to inspect her territory.
Lisa didn't mind the strange glances from the other people in the large room as her eyes were focused on the cheating couple who were being surrounded.
Her lips curved in a cold arc, then she walked forward gently with her eyes still fixed on them, but the strange thing was that the two people whom she was looking at didn't recognize her, but Lisa could understand.
The people unconsciously divided as Lisa walked forward and only when she had stood in front of the intimate couple did everyone snap back to their senses.
They all looked at her like they were about to pierce her body with their eyes, especially the man who held the waist of a dainty woman.
“Who are you? And don't you feel it's rude to barge into people’s parties without any reason?!” The female who seemed to be the one being celebrated today spat as she glared at Lisa in jealousy.
Lisa acted like she didn't see or hear the lady’s taunt and only focused her gaze on the man beside her who looked at her in suspicion.
She let out a scoff and her eyes which were under her glasses flashed with sadness, “What? Just how bad was I that after a little dress up, you wouldn't recognise your own wife?”
Lisa’s words were like a bomb that was thrown in the middle of a silent chaos. Everyone gasps including Dane, who was Lisa’s husband.
“Lisa…?” Dane asked in shock.
Lisa scoffed again, but she didn't respond to his question and turned around to pick up a glass of wine.
“I see you have had too much enjoyment, Dane.” She said, then raised the wine glass to the embarrassed lady next to him, before she returned her cold gaze to the man who had been looking at her with surprise.
How long had he seen her dressed like this? Dane couldn't remember but he knew that after he had married her, he had lost the thrill of being with her and whenever he looked at her, all he saw was an unfresh woman.
“You—” Dane snapped back to his senses, then pointed at her, “What are you doing here?! Lisa, do you have to be so desperate? Even tracing me to this place, have you got no shame?!” He yelled angrily at her, then rolled his eyes in disgust.
No matter how much she dressed up, she was still a woman who wasn't useful and had to rely on him to survive.
“I didn't come here for anything, Dane. I only came here so you can sign this document.” She said, then stretched out the document to him and he took it and read it with curiosity.
After reading it, Dane’s eyes widened in disbelief, he looked at Lisa who looked serious, and then back at the document in his hand again.
“Are you mad?! You want a divorce?! How dare you request a divorce?!” He roared angrily and smashed the divorce papers on the floor as he glared at Lisa.
The crowd in the room gasped in surprise.
Lisa looked at the papers scattered on the floor and bent down to pick them up.
She looked up after she had picked them up, then let out a laugh that sounded so shallow and mocking.
Lisa suddenly clenched the glass in her hand and threw her hand, splashing the contents in the glass on the faces of the cheating couple.
“Ahhh! How could you splash the drink on me?!”
“Lisa!!!”
The first scream was from the mistress, Claire, the secretary of Dane and the other was from her husband.
Lisa glared back at them in rage, her blood boiling as she remembered how much she had sacrificed for this ungrateful man and what he had given in return.
“You ask how I dared request a divorce from a cheater?!” Lisa roared in disbelief, she pressed on and glared at him viciously.
“Three years of devotion, three years of my youth, three years of suffering under your emotional and physical abuse, three years of being treated as nothing by your mother and what you gave me is cheating on me with your secretary?!”
She gritted her teeth so painfully in regret.
She, the heiress of one of the leading families in the country had actually fallen to this point?
She closed her eyes and couldn't help but recall how she had felt when she caught him kissing his secretary in his car on the day of the anniversary. It had been so painful that she wanted to die, but she wasn't taught that way.
If something wasn't meant for her, then she would let it go, but was Dane someone who will eat a loss easily? Well, No!
He looked at the people who watched them like they were animals in the zoo and felt so embarrassed. His eyes spat out fire as he glared at Lisa as she had caused all this.
“You want a divorce? Never!” He roared.
Lisa froze, then suddenly raised her hand and…
SLAP!!
The air in the large room froze, everyone ‘s eyes focused on Lisa who swiveled her palm to reduce the pain.
“This is for the emotional pain you caused me, but this is just the tip,” Lisa said then stretched out the divorce document to him again.
“Sign it, unless you don't want to let me go? Or…You can't do without me?!” Lisa mocked, which snapped everyone back to their senses including the one who had been slapped.
“How dare you lay your hand on me, Lisa?! You want to die?!” He roared again but Lisa wasn't a bit threatened as all she did was stretch the document to him.
“Sign the divorce document!” She repeated.
The room became silent as everyone waited for Dane’s decision.
“Urggh…! Dane, help! My tummy..”
The cry of Claire, the mistress who had been quiet suddenly echoed in the room bringing confusion and chaos.
Lisa watched as Dane’s eyes widened as he rushed towards her, he asked her gently what was wrong and Lisa's hands secretly clenched as she thought of something.
She looked at them, and noticed Dane’s palm on Claire's tummy, Lisa froze, her breathing paused and her eyes met Claire who had a smug look.
Lisa watched as her husband clamoured and ran about as he cared for his mistress.
Suddenly she let out chuckles, her eyes flashed with self-mockery. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, then spat out, “Since your mistress is pregnant, then you should do the needful, which is to divorce me!”
Murmurs flew around as everyone looked at Lisa in pity but it was like she didn't notice as all she wanted was to leave this place.
Dane paused and was about to scold her, but his shirt was suddenly pulled, he lowered his head and saw his gentle woman looking at him, “Our child…”She muttered sadly which hurt his heart.
The words he was about to say got stuck in his throat, and what came out was, “Since you want a divorce, then don't think of taking anything from me! And don't you ever regret it, because I wouldn't take you back!” He gave his conditions loud and clear without being ashamed.
Lisa froze, then let out a sneer, “You don't need to worry about that, I regret divorcing a cheater!”
“You—” He paused, then chuckled, “Okay! I await the day you come back begging me to take you back. I want to see which man would want to keep a barren home!” He said, then snatched the divorce document and signed his name.
Lisa looked at the signed divorce papers and felt like crying but she knew she couldn't, not in front of these people.
Without a word, she turned around decisively to leave.
“Claire, now that I am divorced, our son wouldn't be an illegitimate child and for that to happen, you have to be my wife. Will you marry me, Claire?!”
That was the last word Lisa heard before she left the room without looking back.
She stood at the entrance of the hotel with the document clenched in her hand. She inhaled a mouthful of air, then exhaled.
“I’m free..,”
The next morning, breakfast was quiet – forks clinking, no words spoken. Lisa pushed back her chair, ready to leave for work. Just as she passed him, Joseph's hand shot out, firm around her wrist."It's too short, go change", he said in that commanding tone that left no room for debate. His gaze swept over her dress like a verdict. Her breath hitched, her body betraying her with a rush of heat she despised. She hated how authoritative he was – hated even more how it made her pulse quicken. She tore her hand free and walked out without a word.****The car barely pulled up to the company gates when her phone buzzed. A new message from the same unknown number"Enjoy the headlines. It's only the beginning".Her chest tightened.Stepping inside the building, she left it instantly – eyes on her, whispers trailing in her wake.Employees didn't even try to hide their smirks. Some clutched folded tabloids; others scrolled their phones, shaking their heads as though the proof of her shame was
That night, after the words she overheard from Joseph's study, Lisa lay stiff on her bed, the coat still abandoned on the chair. Sleep wouldn't come – only the echo of his voice, sharp as glass.Keep an eye on Lauren. He's still in love with her. My stepmother. Her throat tightened but no tears fell. She had wasted enough on a man whose heart was never hers.Slowly, she sat up, her green eyes hardening in the dim glow of the lamp. "No more", she whispered into the silence. If Joseph Bronson wanted to chain himself to the ghost of Lauren, let him.She had her own war to fight. Her father's company, her name, her worth – they would use her strength, whether they liked it or not.Lisa lay back down, the decision burning steadily in her chest. Tomorrow, she wouldn't think of Joseph.Tomorrow, she would begin again.Reaching for her phone she made a single phone call. Her voice was steady, stripped of hesitation."There should be a board meeting tomorrow. Email me the necessary paperwork b
The echoes of the gala still haunted Lisa the next morning – the flash of cameras, Dane's sneer, and Joseph's commanding voice that had silenced an entire hall. Now she sat in the mansion's sunlit study, the grand windows doing nothing to warm the chill settling in her chest.Joseph stood across from her, arms folded, his tone clipped and businesslike."There are rules to this arrangement", he said."Our marriage exists for appearances. You'll maintain your role when necessary, nothing more".Lisa's lips parted slightly, but she didn't interrupt."Public events, we attend together. In private life, we remain separate. No questions about my business. No wandering into restricted parts of this house. And above all – keep your emotions out of this. That was our agreement".Lisa lowered her gaze, her hands knotting in her lap.But her thoughts betrayed her.The way he shielded me… the way he told everyone I was his wife. Lisa stood in front of the luxurious restaurant where she would be having her date with her so-called fiancé whom she had never met. She had only heard of him once when her father had rejected her marriage to Dane. He had told her she had a fiancé from a young age and it was the son of his best friend. According to him, they had both made a promise to marry their children to each other. She had found it ridiculous then, and had resisted with all her heart and it's also one of the reasons she was so decisive in leaving as she had believed her father had sold her. Now, standing in front of the restaurant about to meet the fiancée, Joseph Bronson, she felt nothing other than calmness. She had agreed to her father after some quick thought. What is the difference between staying single and marrying someone in her state? At this stage, she doesn't care who she marries because it will be the same. Her heart had grown cold and tired. She inhaled deeply, then walked into the restaurant i
“You’re a disgrace to the Morgan family! Get out!” Lisa stood in front of her father with her head bowed low as she listened to him rage. She didn't say a word no matter how she was insulted. She wasn't a kid anymore and life had taught her patience. The young her, had been so arrogant, hot-headed and did things according to her belief but now… “I wouldn't listen to a word she says! Ask her to leave my home!” Her father yelled, then turned around, “Guards!” He roared and in no time, the guards who had been positioned in hidden places rushed out to take orders.Lisa looked at her father with a pale face, her fist clenched behind her dress, and her eyes glared at him, but she remained silent. Her father, Reed, turned to look at her and sneered seeing her stubborn self, he pointed at her and commanded, “Throw her out of my house!” The air in the room froze until the gentle woman who seemed like she was about to cry spread her arms in front of Lisa which surprised her.
