Hailey's POV

"Uhm..." Levi hesitates. "How do I say this?" He exhales. "I want both of us to go out for dinner," he pauses, then his gaze sweeps over me. "Together."

I sit up so fast that I nearly choke on my water, coughing violently. "What?!"

Why the fuck would he startle me like that? I expected a heads-up or something.

He'd come back from his outing a few minutes ago, while I lay on the couch, scrolling through my phone. Then he said he had something to tell me, but I wasn't expecting... this!

Levi scratches the back of his neck. "I want us to go out for dinner."

"Like a date?" I ask, my voice still raspy.

His expression turns awkward. "Not really... But if you want it to be, you can think of it that."

I raise an eyebrow. "Why would I want that?"

"I just thought that's what you wanted to call it," he shrugs.

"No. Why do you actually want us to go out?"

Levi sighs. "I want us to get to know each other. My family would probably ask a lot of questions.

Hailey's POV Levi holds the car door open for me as we arrive at a modest-looking restaurant. I step out, still irritated about the compliment he'd given me earlier. I don’t thank him, maintaining the same silence we had on the drive over. The valet takes his keys, and as we approach, the doorman pulls the entrance open for us. For somewhere Levi has described as "not too fancy," the place certainly gives off that extremely fancy vibe. With tables set for two, a live band playing soft music in the corner, and guests who look like they each have at least one yacht to their name. The men wear tailored suits, while the women glide through the room in elegant dresses, their hair styled to perfection like they’ve just stepped off a magazine cover. Gold balloons fill the empty spaces on the floor and walls, making it clear there's something else happening here... like a celebration of some sort. My stomach tightens. And once again, I find myself facing the consequences of trusting

Hailey's POV I stay silent, staring out at the passing cars until a new waiter brings our food. As soon as the waiter leaves, Levi exhales. "Hailey, I planned this so we could get to know each other. If we can't even talk, what's the point?" He pushes back his chair, getting ready to stand. "We should just go back. I'll pay for the food." Before he can move, I stop him. "Quit being so dramatic, Levi," I roll my eyes. "Just sit, and I will try to be more civil." He hesitates, watching me carefully, then sighs and lowers himself to his seat. "I'm sorry for the way I acted," he mutters. "It's fine." A beat passes. "I'm also sorry for blaming you," I admit. "I was just upset with how you handled things. I wish you'd found a better way to control the situation instead of trying to intimidate the poor waiter. He was only doing his job." "I'll do better next time." I shake my head. "Oh, no. Let's hope there's no next time." An unreadable look crosses his face. "Why? You do

Levi's POV I pull into the garage and step out to open the door for Hailey. She fell asleep almost as soon as we started driving back. I’d expected the conversation to continue, maybe even get to know each other a little more. Instead, things ended abruptly, and I let myself get too comfortable - making things awkward in the process. I sigh and shake her shoulder lightly. "Hey, we’re here. Wake up." She mumbles something incoherent, shifting to her side - then promptly smacks me in the face. I huff, rubbing my jaw. "Hailey, we're home." 'Home.' Sounds kinda nice. I've never seriously considered settling down - outside the pressure from my father - but I guess the thought of starting a family and having a home with someone I love, is strangely appealing. She stirs slightly, her lashes fluttering open before her eyes squeeze shut again. "Go away, Jake," she mumbles, swatting at my hand. I freeze. 'Jake.' If I remember correctly, her mum mentioned the name th

Hailey's POV The room swims into focus moments after I open my eyes. With a groan, I roll out of bed but immediately regret it as the now-familiar ache pounds in my head. Not long after, a wave of nausea hits me, sending me rushing to the bathroom. I barely make it in time before emptying the remnants of last night's dinner into the toilet. 'I really need to start accepting that my meals won’t last long these days.'Even when it seems like there's nothing left, I stay on the floor for two extra minutes —just in case. Eventually, I flush, freshen up, and head back to my room to get dressed.I slip into a short brown skirt and a black turtleneck, layering the matching jacket over it. A black purse and loafers complete the look. One habit I've developed over the years is ensuring my outfits always match in color and shade. My love for coordinating colors once made me consider a career in interior decorating, but I had to put my family's business first.Once I’ve gathered everything I ne

Hailey's POV Matt picks on the second ring. "Babes, you got married to your baby daddy and you didn't fucking bother to tell me?!" He whisper-yells to me over the phone. Whispers because he's probably at work, and doesn't want to call attention to himself. I fetch my plate from the microwave and get the coffee I'd been brewing, then walk back to where'd been sitting. "I was going to tell you, but everything just blew over. It was meant to be a secret, but we both don't know how it got leaked, " I reply, picking up my phone from the table. Matt frowns, then shakes his head slowly. "Still, you should've told me immediately after it was out. I know we haven't known each other for long, but I expected a certain level of loyalty, babes." I feel a pang of guilt, for not telling him and making him feel like I don't consider him a close enough friend. And because I'm still keeping something away from him. I sigh, taking a sip of my coffee. "I'm sorry. If I had any control o

Hailey's POV I rub my eyes, making sure I'm not imagining things. "Jake?" My voice comes out in a tremor I don't control in time. 'How did he find me? Why is he here?' The reality of seeing him again slams into me, and a wave of dizziness washes over me. I grip the doorpost, knuckles turning white. I'd thought that I had gotten over Jake's betrayal, that it didn't hurt as much anymore. I convinced myself that when I saw him again, he wouldn't have any effect on me. But looking at him right now - the athletic-built, blonde-haired man I'd once been in love with - the constructed wall around my heart cracks, bringing in a flood of memories and emotions I'd thought were buried. "So it's true, you're actually married to him." Jake's tone drips with disbelief and scorn. "I always knew you were desperate, Hailey, but this? This is far more than that." I inhale deeply, willing myself not to let the hurt and anger show on my face. He's looking for a reaction, but I won't give

Hailey's POV I'd barely woken up from sleep before I heard the sound of Levi's car driving in. I'd intended to take a short nap, but ended up getting knocked out for four hours. And the funny thing is I feel even more tired than I was when I went to sleep. "Hailey? Are you home?" I hear the faint sound of Levi's voice asking from the living room. With a groan that stretches into a yawn, I push myself off the bed, heading toward his voice. "Hi," I mumble, leaning against the wall opposite him, arms crossed. "Hi." His gaze sweeps over my face, concern crossing his eyes. "Did I wake you?" he asks, a guilty edge to his tone. I shake my head. "You didn't. I was awake before you came home." "Okay." I move past him to sit on the couch. He follows after, plopping down beside me and loosening his tie with an exhausted sigh. I arch an eyebrow. "Long day?" "Yeah," he replies, rubbing the back of his neck. "Trying to nail this building contract. They're being difficult

I slide down until I’m on the floor, grabbing the remote and turning on the TV. I need the noise to slice through the tension in the room.To my annoyance, Charlotte plants herself right in front of me, arms crossed, that familiar frown stamped on her face. It's become permanent lately—or maybe it just shows up whenever she’s around me. "Didn't you see that I'd been calling?" she asks, eyes scanning me like she’s waiting for a confession."Just leave me alone, Char. I don't want to deal with this right now," I mumble, my eyes struggling to stay open. "Are you drunk?" Her read jerks back, disgust plain on her face. Just as I'm about to scold my receptionist for spilling coffee on some important documents, I feel someone tap my arm. I turn to find a tall, red-haired woman smiling up at me—big green eyes, an aura that practically screams sex. She's the kind of woman Levi, back in his fuckboy days, would've been all over. She flashes a seductive smile that probably works on most men.It doesn't work on me. In fact, it irritates me. Something about her rubs me the wrong way, though I can't quite put my finger on what."Do you work here?" She asks, batting her lashes in a way that makes me wonder if she has something in her eye. I ignore her and turn back to the receptionist. She's usually meticulous, which makes this slip-up even more disappointing. And even worse for her, I happened to be passing by when I caught her dabbing the papers with a towel. "How did that happen?" I ask in a calmer voice this time, completely ignoring the lady. Maybe the redhead will take the hint and walk away. She do

Charlotte's POV "I'm here to see my boyfriend, Jake. Jake Presley?" I say again, louder this time, to the receptionist who seems determined to ignore me. "You know, your boss?" She keeps typing like I'm invisible. She keeps typing like I’m invisible.I clench my jaw, tapping my freshly done nails on the desk. I just had them done, and now I’m ruining them on this cheap-ass counter."Is he in?" I ask, leaning forward. She ignores me still. I knock on the desk harder. "Hey? Lady? If you're not going to do your job, why are you even here." She glances at me briefly, her face twisting with disdain, but doesn't say anything. What the hell is wrong with this lady? I click my tongue in irritation, deciding to get her to respond one way or another. I'm done being polite. I spot a cup of coffee on her desk and, without hesitation, tip it over. The liquid splashes across her lap and over a stack of papers."What the hell?!" she shrieks, leaping to her feet.Guess it was hot. Oh well. Bon

Hailey's POVHe’s adjusted to this whole friendship thing so fast, it’s almost unsettling. It's been a week since we got back, and he won't stop calling me his friend every chance he gets. I know I should be happy about it—since I'm the one who asked for this—but it's fucking unnerving. Sometimes I wonder if he says it just to get a reaction out of me. Because the way he acts makes it hard to believe he ever said he liked me. I sigh and tap aimlessly at my laptop. I’ve been coming into the office nearly every day lately, thanks to the upcoming launch of our new skincare line. As the PR manager, I’m supposed to be cooking up ways to boost publicity, but right now, I’m seriously rethinking all my life choices. That makes me remember—Levi wasn't bluffing when he said he'd help me start up my own business. He made me call my parents and sat right in front of me while I told them about my plans, just to make sure I didn't chicken out. Surprisingly, took it well— better than I expected.

Levi's POV"I think we should just be friends." Those damned words keep playing on a loop in my head, even as we wheel our luggage through airport security. It's been two nights, and they still won’t leave me alone. What a way to get turned down. *Flashback*She uttered the worst words a man could hear after confessing his feelings, and at the worst fucking moment. "Hailey—" I began to speak, but she raised her hand, stopping me. "Let me speak, Levi," she said softly. "I liked how things have been between us, too." Hope flickered in my chest, but it didn't live long. "But we can't let it go on. I'm afraid one of us would get hurt... it's too risky," she continued. "If we stay just friends, we won't explore beyond the friendship level, and none of us would end up getting hurt when all this is finally over." My jaw clenched and unclenched. She hadn't even given us a shot, and was already already shutting it down? Who the hell gave her the right to make that choice for both of u

Levi's POV"You're kidding, right?" she asks, propping herself up on her elbow.I lift my brows. "Do I sound like I'm kidding?" She studies me, then shakes her head. "No… but you must be.""I’m not." My voice is steady. "I’m dead serious. We could make him regret hurting you. Nothing too crazy—just enough to teach him a lesson. So he knows not to lay hands on women."She looks at me like I've lost it, then hums and lays back on my chest. My fingers drift lightly along her neck. I love the way she shivers at my touch."Just a little scare, Hailey," I murmur. For some reason, getting back at him feels more important to me than it should. Just the thought of letting him get away with it, and him thinking he won't face the consequences of his actions, annoys me. In a way, Hailey's not the only reason why I want this so much—though she's the main one. It's him. The sonofabitch walks around the office with his nose up like he owns the place. He's lazy, a slacker, and even worse? He's a

Hailey's POV "We should let each other know of some important parts of our past... Like if there are any crazy exes to be worried about." Levi laughs. "I don't think I have more crazy exes... just the one." Then he teases, "How about you? Any crazy exes I should know about?" My body grows rigid as I think about Jake and Charlotte, and the way he harassed me in Levi's home. "Hailey?" Levi asks, his voice full of concern. "Are you okay?" I inhale shakily. "Yeah, I am," I lie. "Just remembering someone." Without a word, he draws me onto his chest, his hand rubbing my back soothingly "My ex-boyfriend cheated on me with my best friend," I confess. "The night we met was... it was just hours after it happened. I went to the club to drown myself in alcohol—didn't go as expected." The memory makes me wince. He’s silent for a beat. Then, voice low, he says, "I’m sorry." I laugh dryly. "It hurt worse that she betrayed me. We grew up together. She threw it all away without a second

Hailey's POV After another hour of explanations, trying to make Levi’s parents understand why we’d kept the pregnancy a secret—and a round of Alicia profusely apologizing for her friend's behavior—we finally head back to our room in tense silence. It’s a crazy shift from the sensual, almost romantic, atmosphere of this morning. I pace the room while Levi freshens the bathroom, trying to figure out where to even start—everything from what went on between us last night, to some of the things his father said, to why the fuck a crazy lady attacked me over him. The door clicks open. I prepare myself to speak, but the words die in my throat when Levi steps out—wearing nothing but black sweatpants, water dripping off his beautifully sculpted body. He stalks toward me slowly. I stand rooted to the spot, my eyes glued to his bare chest. Then he gets to me and stretches his hand over my head. I instinctively shift back, and when he leans in, I shut my eyes, waiting for a kiss. But

Hailey's POV The day had been going so much better—until now. I’d been enjoying the little bubble of self-deception Levi and I had created for ourselves. But of course, his dad had to burst it.From his explanations, I couldn't quite tell if his intentions were as noble as he claimed. What I could tell was why Levi resented him so much. The man doesn't know where to draw the line between business and family. He thinks business logic works for family matters. I hope Levi doesn't turn out like him. Still, in those brief moments, I caught a glimpse of their similarities—their knack for claiming good intentions while their actions suggested otherwise. As I step back into the main hall, a hand slips into mine."Come on, they're waiting," Levi says, tugging me toward the tables. He doesn’t ask what I talked about with his dad, or how the conversation went. Part of me feels relieved. Another part feels... a little hurt by his lack of concern.I stop, holding onto his hand. "What's the rus

Levi's POV I leave Hailey for a moment to grab her a cup of apple juice from the buffet, but a hand claps down on my shoulder, halting me. I follow the hand up to find Elliot grinning at me. "Lev," he says, pulling back. "We haven’t talked since you got here. What's up with you?" A stab of guilt hits me. He’s the groom—he should be basking in attention, not chasing me down. I should’ve swallowed my pride and congratulated him first. I sigh, resisting the urge to rub the back of my neck. "Not much," I reply. "Congratulations, man. I should’ve said it earlier." He waves it off. "It's fine." Typical Elliot. Never holds a grudge, never takes things too personally. I’ve always admired that about him. If the roles were reversed, I'd still be keeping score. Hell, I am still keeping score—and he doesn’t even seem to notice. And even if he notices my reservations toward him, he still plays it easy—even sent a congratulatory email for my wedding, despite the way everyone found out. He’
