SEVENTEEN

My face burned from shame as I reached for the doorknob to the Alpha’s room, my breath held and begging it not to make a sound.

I had no business being anywhere near his door, let alone stepping into his room without his knowledge but I had to. If I ever wanted to get my mother’s picture back, the one tucked in my dress the night I was meant to mate with the him.

It was easier to just forget about it, but I have been holding onto that photo for years now and it was the one thing of my mother’s that I still have. So, I’ve decided to take this risk.

So far, I have been able to get out of the slave quarters, and slipped through the hallway where no guards are, all thanks to the late hour and pure luck. I now have one last step which is entering this room without being caught, but it seemed like the hardest part.

Fuck, no. Why does this darn knob have to be this stiff on a night like this?!

My hand trembled around it. Can I really do this? Would it be better if I turn arou

“Did you not hear me?” Her expression changed to that of annoyance and before I knew it, she went from standing at the doorway to walking over and slapping me hard across the face. “Or do I have to repeat myself?!” She added furiously, looking ready to strike my face again but the Alpha King stepped in. “What do you think you’re doing, Zelda?” He questioned her to my dismay, and from across his shoulder, I saw Zelda’s brow furrowing in confusion. “Are you seriously supporting her right now?” She asked, astounded. “She is supposed to be in the quarter, what the actual hell is she doing in your chamber? Most especially this late in the night, Damon?” She gazed up at him, her voice holding disappointment and I realized I couldn’t just stand behind him doing nothing. My hand dropped from my stinging cheek and mustering up the courage, I side stepped him to face Zelda. I was the one who entered his room without permission and should be the one to fix this. “No, this is all my fault, ma

Before I could say a word, he turned sharply, already moving toward the door and ready to call the guards in. Without thinking, I reached out and grabbed his hand, my grip trembling as he froze midway. “What do you think you’re doing?” His raging eyes snapped to mine. For a second, I thought he might actually yank his hand free and drag me out himself. But he didn’t and I didn’t let go of him either.“If you knew this is how badly you would be treating me, why hadn’t you just killed me?” I asked, daring to look him in the eye challengingly. “You should have allowed your men to do their jobs and not bring me here. Living here in this hell is far worse than death itself.” I yelled all at once, before freeing his hand, my heartbeat accelerating as I made for the door.He wants to call his men on me, doesn't he? Then I’m going to help him. Suffering isn’t new to me, I can take every punishment in this world. After all, being born into this world as an omega was the first punishment. “Yo

“W…what condition?” “From this moment on, you’re no longer a Luna,” She spat. “You’re a slave. And you’ll be living in the slave quarters, both you and your sister.” She declared, her voice holding finality and I blinked rapidly, silenced. My sister hoisted herself up, her hope crushed but before she could say anything, I had already made up my mind. “We accept.” I choked out, faking a smile and Zelda smirked knowingly. “Good choice. The guards will be here to release you both from the cell soon.” She simply replied, swirling around and making her way out of the cell. Left alone with my sister, I turned to look at her and saw a scowl etched on her face as she glared at the spot Zelda once was. “Now I feel so stupid for kneeling in front of someone like her. She thinks any of this was your fault? No one asked her mate to rescue us, or serve you the contract in the first place. How could they be so selfish?” She gritted, and I’ve never seen her this pissed. Not even the night our

As soon as the Alpha finished rejecting me, I was thrown back into the cell. I collapsed down on the floor, my lips trembling as fresh tears streamed down my face. Not only was I heartbroken, I felt numb. I was most especially filled with shame and guilt as my sister stood over me, watching me as I cried, my heart twisting in my chest. I was a failure. Not only was I rejected by my second chance mate, but I also failed to get him to release my sister. It didn’t matter that she had nothing to do with any of it, Damon wanted her to suffer too. I knew he was angry that I deceived him and made an error in the entire pack’s plan but I never imagined he could be this ruthless. Unblinking, he said the words and cast me aside without any atom of remorse and in that moment, it dawned on me the rumors about him were all true. Actually, it doesn’t do enough justice or come close to how big of a monster he really is. And worst of all? Lena was looking at me with worry in her eyes, when she

“You called for me.” I voiced for the umpteenth time since I've been in his chamber, knelt in the middle of the room while he stood with arms crossed, gazing out of the window. Usually, he was direct and goes straight to the point but this one was different. He was scarily silent, and the more time that went, I knew my life was on the line. Or could it be that he suddenly doesn't want to talk anymore? Does that mean I could leave? Damn, but I needed to speak with him. If I leave and lost this moment, who knows what’d happen next. The thought of failing as a sister if Lena ended up dying together with me was making my chest heavy, I couldn't restrain myself from speaking again. “I’ve thought about it and I have decided I'm going to accept my punishment, whatever it turns out to be. But the thing is, my sister had nothing to do with what I did. So, can you please leave her out of this?” My voice came out unsure as I requested, eyes staring downward as I could no longer afford to look
