The moonlight spilled faintly through the high-pitched window of the room, tracing silver lines across Nyra's tangled hair as she lay on the bed.

Her body was still sore, her cheek pressed against the cool linen. The pain from earlier echoed through her bones.

She could barely sleep. Her mind kept drifting to the mating ceremony Alpha Kael had mentioned–and the moment he'd called her his mate.

None of it made any sense.

Was this all a setup?

Just then, a soft knock came from the door. Nyra stirred, too tired to get up. It was already midnight.

The door creaked open slowly, revealing a figure dressed in plain servant's garb–a young maid, her face partially shadowed by a bonnet. She carried a tray with bread, egg sauce, and water.

“Dinner,” the maid said calmly.

Nyra didn’t move for a moment. Her body ached even more. She didn’t want to eat, but her stomach growled in protest.

“Leave it there instead,” she muttered, her voice hoarse.
