Chapter 12: Marked By Cruelty

The dungeon doors groaned as they opened, a chilling screech echoing through the hollow corridor. The place was dark. The guards shoved Nyra inside, her feet dragging against the damp stones.

Her body was already battered, her mind dazed. Everything happened too fast. First, she was just in her room eating and next she was framed for almost killing one of the servants.

“Please…don't do this,” she begged as she turned around, her voice barely above a whisper, raw from pain and disbelief.

The only reply was the clang of the iron gate slamming shut. The lock twisted in place with a brutal finality.

She collapsed onto the cold floor like discarded rubbish, her torn gown clinging to her blood-smeared skin. Her injured shoulder pulsed painfully.

She still couldn't believe this. She was being punished. No one even believed. Of course, why would they?

Nyra's fingers curled into the dirt. “Zara,” she whispered. But her wolf was quiet, dulled by exhaustion.
