The next day, Zeoling walked to school bright and early. He emerged on a paved road leading back towards town. He was very careful not to draw attention to himself because it would soon derail his mission. He went towards the town, taking in the changes that had occurred since his last visit to the planet. That was before they were put to sleep and the gates to hell were forced shut.

Zeoling saw a statue of the moon goddess and town founder, the witch. On that fateful day, everyone had a fight, but it wasn't something to think about at the time. He entered a restaurant and ordered a coffee. All eyes were on him.

It was the first time they'd seen a man with locks enter a town full of white people.

Zeoling stood out a lot, and when he realized it, he loathed himself. He grumbled, "These folks haven't changed their stares." He quickly despised everyone in his vicinity. He approached the waitress and requested a cup of coffee.

"I'd like a cup of coffee," he said to the waitress.

  • Crestfall High    CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

BECCA'S POVTime seemed to slow as the massive black wolf launched itself through the air, its red eyes blazing with mindless fury. Every moment felt vivid and lengthy and burned itself into my brain with temerity—the way moonlight gleamed off its fangs, the droplets of saliva that sprayed from its jaws, the sound of its claws cutting through the air toward my face."BECCA!" Skye's shout broke through my paralysis. He tackled me from the side, both of us hitting the ground hard just as the wolf's claws whistled through the space where my head had been. We rolled, dirt and grass filling my mouth, my injured arm screaming in protest. The canvas bag of wolfsbane roots scattered across the ground. The wolf landed with a thud that shook the earth, immediately spinning around for another attack. Its movements were wrong—too fluid, too coordinated. This wasn't the mindless beast I'd feared. Lyssa was controlling it like a puppet, using Cole's body terrifyingly."The house!" I screamed, grabb

  • Crestfall High    CHAPTER SIXTEEN

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: BECCA'S POVWe arrived at my house in a cacophony of screeching tires and frenzied movements. Sam hadn't even fully stopped the car before I was fumbling with the door handle, my good hand clumsy with exhaustion and blood loss. The protective wards hummed as we crossed the property line—a sensation like walking through warm honey that made my witch instincts sing with recognition.Home. Safety. But also the place where all my problems with my mother festered like an open wound."Get inside, quickly," my mother commanded, her voice sharp with urgency. She practically shoved us through the front door, her hands already moving in complex patterns as she reinforced the wards. Purple light flared around the doorframe, the windows, even seeping up from the foundation. "There. Nothing can get through now. Not without me knowing about it."I stumbled into the living room, my legs finally giving out. I collapsed onto the white and blue sofa—the one I'd thought was hideous wh

  • Crestfall High     CHAPTER SIXTEEN

BECCA'S POVI sped towards Mrs. Wonder's shop at full throttle, throwing both caution and all sense of self-preservation to the wind.By my side sat Cole, his face set like flint and his body oozing spear-tipped focus. He said nothing, but I could tell a thousand thoughts were churning through his mind at once. I let my eyes linger on him for a moment, then focused on the road again, uncomfortable with the awkward silence in the vehicle.Sam must have read my mind, speaking in a low tone that broke the silence from the backseat."Becca, can you please slow down? We're no use to anyone if we crash."Cole glanced in my direction, his eyes clearly urging me to ignore Sam's voice of reason and continue in my current line of action. Ignoring Sam's voice, I continued speeding along the road as townspeople yelled at me with obscene hand signs and berating voices."Becca! Slow down!""I don't think you understand our situat

  • Crestfall High    CHAPTER FOURTEEN

COLE'S POVBecca and I found Sam in the library, hunched over a chemistry textbook but clearly uniterested in reading it. Her eyes kept darting toward the entrance, and her leg bounced nervously under the table. When she saw us approach together, her eyes widened with a blend of relief and confusion."What's going on?" she whispered as we slid into seats on either side of her. "Pearl is telling everyone that you and Cole hooked up and that you've been planning to steal him from her this whole time. Beatrice is backing her up, and half the school is choosing sides. It’s World War Teen out there.""Let them," Becca said, surprising both me and Sam. "We have bigger problems than trivial high school drama."Sam looked between us, taking in our serious expressions. "Okay, now you’re scaring me. What going on?""How much do you believe in the supernatural?" I asked bluntly.Sam blinked. "Like ghosts and stuff? I mean,

  • Crestfall High    CHAPTER THIRTEEN

BECCA'S POVCole led me to an empty classroom at the far end of the building—one that looked like it hadn't been used in years. Dust particles danced in the afternoon sunlight streaming through the grimy windows, and the desks were stacked haphazardly against one wall. He checked the hallway before closing the door behind us and leaning against it, arms crossed over his chest."Start talking," he said, his voice low and steady, but I could hear the edge of urgency beneath it.I paced the small space, my heels clicking against the worn linoleum floor. Where did I even begin? With the spell? With my mother? With the fact that I'd apparently opened some kind of gateway to hell?"I cast a love spell," I blurted out, then immediately felt stupid. It sounded so trivial, so teenage-girl-with-a-crush pathetic when I said it out loud.Cole's expression didn't change. "On me?""Yes, on you," I admitted, refusing to look away even th

  • Crestfall High    CHAPTER TWELVE

BECCA'S POVThe classroom felt unusually cold after the new teacher's statement. I glanced around and noticed that everyone seemed uncomfortable. His words hung in the air like a warning, and the way he stared at Cole made my skin crawl. Something about this man was off, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it."Now, let's continue with our lesson," Zeoling said, breaking the tension as he turned back to the board. His voice was smooth, almost too smooth, and I found myself unable to focus on anything he was writing. My mind kept drifting back to the party last night. The spell had gone wrong—terribly wrong. I had felt something dark release from me when Jack interrupted my chant. The way Cole's necklace had reacted, the strange cold that had settled ove
