Chapter 1

Nicole's POV

[I have an international video conference tonight. I won't be going home. Get some rest. Don't wait for me.]

Gunther's messages appeared on my phone. I stared at the screen and forced a small smile.

Ten minutes earlier, Chloe had posted on social media: [Thanks for treating me to such an amazing dinner, boss! Suddenly, I'm not so tired from all the overtime!]

The photo showed the night view from an upscale Falennian restaurant. Gunther's sharply defined face was clearly reflected in the window.

So, his supposedly urgent international meeting was actually a dinner with an intern.

I turned off the screen without replying, then took down the so-called marital conduct agreement that had been posted on the wall for three years.

The first rule clearly wrote: [The wife may not have any physical contact with the husband without his permission.]

I walked over to the shredder. With a harsh shredding noise, it reduced the agreement I had once treated as sacred law to scraps.

Mrs. Watson, our family's maid, came over with a glass of warm milk and was shocked. "Ma'am, Mr. Lane made those rules himself. Why did you shred them?"

"I won't need them anymore," I said with a calm and low voice.

Mrs. Watson froze, as if she no longer recognized me.

I headed upstairs to the bedroom. It was at this time that my phone buzzed.

Nate, the head of the College of Design, had sent me a text message: [Nicole, have you decided whether to accept your place at Lumiville Academy of Design?]

I typed a reply: [I'll accept it, Nate.]

Another text came in: [That means three years of sequestered study overseas on your own. Have you discussed it with your husband?]

I texted another reply: [I'm free to go wherever I want. I don't need to discuss it with anyone.]

Back in the bedroom, I opened Chloe's post again. I stared at the location tag for the Peninsula Hotel Revolving Rooftop Restaurant.

We went there only on our wedding anniversaries.

Every time, Gunther would make the servers move our tables exactly one meter apart. Even when I handed him a wineglass, he would not let my fingers brush his.

But tonight, he had let another woman sit beside him. I enlarged the photo and focused on Chloe's wrist.

I gasped. She was wearing a red sandalwood rosary, a keepsake Gunther's grandmother had left him when she died.

In our three years of marriage, whenever I touched it, he would warn me coldly, "Don't touch my personal belongings."

Now, they were openly displayed on an intern's wrist.

A sharp ache spread through my heart, but cold indifference quickly replaced it. I went into the walk-in closer, pulled out my suitcase, and started packing my things.

My phone buzzed again. Chloe had sent me a video in a private message.

It showed a serving of beef stew dumped in a trash can, still steaming. I had spent five hours making it that afternoon and sent the driver to deliver it to his office.

Chloe's sweet voice came through the phone.

"Nicole, I'm so sorry. Gunther said the stew was too greasy, and the smell was making me dizzy, so he threw it out. You're not mad at me, are you?"

My stomach twisted with nausea. Keeping my face blank, I typed a reply.

[No. Trash belongs in the trash.]

I sent it and blocked her. Then I opened the closet and looked at an elegant black gift box. Inside lay a custom tie I had spent six months sewing by hand.

I had planned to give it to him for his birthday tomorrow.

I picked up the scissors and cut the expensive satin in two without hesitating. Then I threw it into the bin together with the box.

When I went to the study for my passport, I opened the drawer he had forbidden me to touch.

Inside was a pink strawberry hair tie. Under the paperweight on his desk was a note in Chloe's handwriting, covered in doodles. There was even an open jar of colorful candy beside the black coffee he always drank without sugar.

The boundaries he took such pride in… The ones he treated as sacred, had already crumbled for another woman.

I did not cry. Seven years of loving him in secret and three years of marriage felt like a complete joke.

Once I had packed everything, I turned on my computer and opened the airline's website. I booked a flight to Lumiville in five days, with no return ticket.

In five days, I would cross the world and begin a life on the banks of the River Sein without him.

I would set my love free and leave Gunther to his boundaries.

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 11

Three months later, I returned to Oceanton to settle the last of the settlements. Gunther arranged to meet me at a quiet cafe. That day, he wore a clean white shirt, and his hair was cut short. He looked much fresher, though a lingering weariness remained around his eyes. He pushed a folder toward me. "This is the loan for the thirty thousand dollars your father needed. No need to pay it back anymore." He paused, then added, "I've also bought Mountains in Fall in my own name from the company and donated it to the city art museum. The donor's name...is yours." I opened the folder and glanced inside. I nodded before accepting it. "Thank you." He looked at me in silence for so long that I thought he would not speak again. "I've figured out a lot these past years." His voice was dry when he finally spoke. "You installed the motion sensor lights at home because I kept bumping into table corners when I got up at night. You kept gastric medicine in the study and wrote reminder

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 10

Three years later, I was at the Oceanton Fashion Week. As an emerging designer of Kentran descent, I presented my graduation collection, "Boundary," in the closing show. When the last model finished walking the runway, the lights went dark, leaving a single spotlight on the runway entrance. I slowly walked out in a pure white asymmetric gown I had designed myself. My design statement appeared on the large screen behind me. [This collection is dedicated to every woman who has been hurt in love and finally chosen to let the other person keep their boundaries while she keeps her freedom.] As the statement ended, thunderous applause filled the room. I stood in the center of the runway, smiling as I bowed to the audience. My gaze swept across the seats, and I paused briefly. Gunther sat in the middle of the front row. He had lost a lot of weight. His once sharp features had softened, and he stared straight at me with red eyes. In his hands was a large bouquet of white roses in f

Gunther returned home alone. He shut himself in the study for three days and nights, seeing no one. On the fourth day, he stumbled over to the desk and opened the drawer he had once forbidden me to touch as though remembering something. At the very back lay an old iron box covered in dust. He opened it with trembling hands. Inside was a thick stack of diaries. He opened one of the diaries to the first page. [September 15, 20XX. Sunny. I saw the senior Gunther in the library again today. He seemed to glow as he sat reading by the window. I didn't dare go up to him. I could only watch him in secret.] [June 22, 20XX. Rainy. Gunther graduated. I watched him from the crowd. He shone so brightly, and I felt so small. Congratulations on graduating, Gunther.] [March 8, 20XX. Cloudy. I heard our family is arranging a marriage with the Lane family. I couldn't sleep all night. Will they choose me? Will it be me?] He read page after page, year after year. There was that distant a

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 8

Nicole's POVThe sky over Lumiville was always so blue. I had just finished a full day of classes, carrying a bolt of traditionally dyed satin I had just bought. I left the academy to look for inspiration by the Sein River when suddenly, a black Bentley stopped in front of me. The door opened and a familiar figure rushed out, though he somehow seemed like a stranger. It was Gunther. He was a complete disaster. His expensive suit was wrinkled, as though he had not changed it in days. Dark stubble covered his jaw, and his bloodshot eyes were fixed on me. He practically ran over, opening his arms and wanting to pull me into an embrace. Instinctively, I turned aside and stepped back, holding my fabric and avoiding his touch. His arms froze in midair, and so did the urgent, elated look on his face. "Nicole..." His voice was raw, with a fragile note of disbelief. "Come back with me." I looked at him quietly and said nothing. He stepped forward, his voice urgent and pleadin

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 7

Nicole's POVMy life in Lumiville was busy and fulfilling. The academy's schedule was packed. Every day, I soaked up everything I could learn about design, fabrics, and tailoring. By day, I went back and forth between fabric markets full of beautiful materials and pattern rooms, my hands stained with paint and chalk dust. At night, I returned to my small rented apartment and sketched designs as I watched the twinkling stars outside my window, working until morning. I had not thought about Gunther in a long time. Occasionally, his face would flicker through my dreams, blurred as if I was seeing him through a layer of mist. One day, I had just left the studio when Nate from back home called. "Nicole, how have you been? Are you settling into Lumiville?" "I'm doing well, Nate. Thanks for asking," I said. He was silent for a few seconds before speaking hesitantly. "Well... Mr. Lane contacted me a few days ago. He asked for your contact information." My hand tightened around t

Mrs. Watson hesitated, as if she had more to say. "She has gone out to take care of something," Gunther cut her off coldly and bit into a slice of toast. It tasted like cardboard. He picked up his phone, opened Messenger, and found his conversation with Nicole. He typed: [Where are you?] Then he gave it another thought. Reaching out first would make him seem too eager, as if he cared. Gunther deleted the message, put his phone down with a blank expression, and drove to the office. He was feeling off all day at work. During a meeting with senior management that morning, he paused halfway through speaking. Out of habit, he waited for someone to bring him a cup of coffee served at precisely the right temperature. However, the conference room door stayed closed. He waited a few seconds. No one came in. The room was silent, and every member of management looked at him in confusion. He frowned, cleared his throat, and continued, but his thoughts were a mess. Just then,
