Chapter 2

Autor: South Twig
At two in the morning, Gunther opened the bedroom door. He carried an elegant thermos flask and walked straight to the bed.

"I knew you'd still be awake. I picked up some seafood chowder from the south side of the city on my way home."

I glanced at it. The bag outside was wet, and the chowder inside was completely cold. I stayed where I was and quietly said, "Thanks, but I'm allergic to seafood."

Gunther stopped loosening his tie and frowned. "Really? Why haven't you mentioned that before?"

I forced a small smile and said nothing.

During our second year of marriage, Gunther had brought me chowder from the same place. After eating it, I went into shock and was rushed to the emergency room.

He had not come. His excuse was that he would not deal with emergencies during his personal time.

Afterward, he had even hugged me, which was rare, and promised he would not forget this.

And yet, he had forgotten this completely anyway.

The last flicker of emotion faded from me.

He took off his suit jacket and held it out to me out of habit. I did not take it, and the expensive handmade jacket slipped onto the carpet.

Gunther stared at me. "What's wrong with you today?"

A small square box of black velvet slipped from the jacket's pocket and fell open. Inside was a dazzling custom Cartier necklace worth six figures.

Gunther's expression shifted, but he quickly recovered his usual cool composure. Before I could ask, he picked up the box and spoke casually.

"I picked it up for my mom's birthday."

I lowered my eyes.

Gunther's mother, Kate, was a devout who ate no meat and prays daily. She hated flashy jewelry covered in small diamonds. Gunther knew that even better than I did.

I did not expose the lie. When I remained silent, he rubbed his brow, his voice turning cold.

"Stop imagining things. Go to sleep."

"Alright."

Just then, his phone lit up on the table. A message from Chloe appeared on the screen.

[Gunther, has the necklace been resized? I want to wear it to the party tomorrow.]

Without a change in expression, Gunther turned the phone face down and said, "it's just spam."

"Your intern sends you spam at two in the morning?" I looked him straight in the eyes.

His gaze turned cold. "Nicole, do you have to be so sensitive? Chloe just started working for me and she's just like a little sister to me."

I said nothing and took out my phone. I opened Chloe's post and held it out to him.

His frown deepened as he looked at the screen. "It's just your typical social media post. What's wrong with a young woman taking a few pictures?"

In the past, I would have insisted on an explanation, with my eyes probably red and me in tears. Now, I just looked at him calmly.

"You're right, of course."

I turned and lay back down under the blanket with my back to him.

"I'm tired. Get some sleep."

Gunther stood there, stunned by how readily I agreed. He watched me for a while, as though my calm unsettled him. After a brief silence, his voice softened a little.

"After my birthday party tomorrow, I'll take you on vacation to the Coralhaven Islands. Just the two of us."

I kept my eyes closed and murmured a word, but I knew that day would never come.

Sounds of water running could be heard from the bathroom.

I sat up and picked up the iPad he had left on the sofa. The password was Chloe's birthday, and I unlocked it easily.

His conversation with Chloe was pinned at the top of his messages.

Chloe: [Gunther, you gave me such an expensive necklace. Won't Nicole be mad if she sees it?]

Gunther had replied quickly: [It's just a necklace. She has always behaved herself. She won't make a fuss over something so minor.]

I scrolled up and found a screenshot of a bank transfer that hurt to look at. Gunther had sent Chloe three hundred thousand dollars as employee benefit. The note read, "Down payment."

I stared at the screen, my fingertips growing cold.

The month before, my father had undergone heart bypass surgery. We had urgently needed thirty thousand dollars to cover his intensive care bills.

Gunther had stood at the end of the hallway, his expression cold, and handed me a sheet of paper. He had made me write a note on the spot saying that I owe him the money, and even told me to include the interest rate in it.

"We need to draw a line between our shared finances and personal expenses even in a marriage," he had said. "I hope you understand."

His boundaries had only ever been an excuse to shut me out. I took a deep breath and put the iPad back where I had found it.

I did not sleep that night.

Instead, little by little, I erased every trace of myself from the house.

At dawn, my best friend sent me a message: [Nicole, are you still going to Gunther's birthday party tonight?]

Looking at the screen, I remembered our wedding three years earlier. With tears in my eyes, I had promised to stay by his side as his wife forever.

I typed a few words and pressed send: [Yes. For the last time.]

It would be a dignified ending to our relationship.

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 11

Three months later, I returned to Oceanton to settle the last of the settlements. Gunther arranged to meet me at a quiet cafe. That day, he wore a clean white shirt, and his hair was cut short. He looked much fresher, though a lingering weariness remained around his eyes. He pushed a folder toward me. "This is the loan for the thirty thousand dollars your father needed. No need to pay it back anymore." He paused, then added, "I've also bought Mountains in Fall in my own name from the company and donated it to the city art museum. The donor's name...is yours." I opened the folder and glanced inside. I nodded before accepting it. "Thank you." He looked at me in silence for so long that I thought he would not speak again. "I've figured out a lot these past years." His voice was dry when he finally spoke. "You installed the motion sensor lights at home because I kept bumping into table corners when I got up at night. You kept gastric medicine in the study and wrote reminder

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 10

Three years later, I was at the Oceanton Fashion Week. As an emerging designer of Kentran descent, I presented my graduation collection, "Boundary," in the closing show. When the last model finished walking the runway, the lights went dark, leaving a single spotlight on the runway entrance. I slowly walked out in a pure white asymmetric gown I had designed myself. My design statement appeared on the large screen behind me. [This collection is dedicated to every woman who has been hurt in love and finally chosen to let the other person keep their boundaries while she keeps her freedom.] As the statement ended, thunderous applause filled the room. I stood in the center of the runway, smiling as I bowed to the audience. My gaze swept across the seats, and I paused briefly. Gunther sat in the middle of the front row. He had lost a lot of weight. His once sharp features had softened, and he stared straight at me with red eyes. In his hands was a large bouquet of white roses in f

Gunther returned home alone. He shut himself in the study for three days and nights, seeing no one. On the fourth day, he stumbled over to the desk and opened the drawer he had once forbidden me to touch as though remembering something. At the very back lay an old iron box covered in dust. He opened it with trembling hands. Inside was a thick stack of diaries. He opened one of the diaries to the first page. [September 15, 20XX. Sunny. I saw the senior Gunther in the library again today. He seemed to glow as he sat reading by the window. I didn't dare go up to him. I could only watch him in secret.] [June 22, 20XX. Rainy. Gunther graduated. I watched him from the crowd. He shone so brightly, and I felt so small. Congratulations on graduating, Gunther.] [March 8, 20XX. Cloudy. I heard our family is arranging a marriage with the Lane family. I couldn't sleep all night. Will they choose me? Will it be me?] He read page after page, year after year. There was that distant a

Nicole's POVThe sky over Lumiville was always so blue. I had just finished a full day of classes, carrying a bolt of traditionally dyed satin I had just bought. I left the academy to look for inspiration by the Sein River when suddenly, a black Bentley stopped in front of me. The door opened and a familiar figure rushed out, though he somehow seemed like a stranger. It was Gunther. He was a complete disaster. His expensive suit was wrinkled, as though he had not changed it in days. Dark stubble covered his jaw, and his bloodshot eyes were fixed on me. He practically ran over, opening his arms and wanting to pull me into an embrace. Instinctively, I turned aside and stepped back, holding my fabric and avoiding his touch. His arms froze in midair, and so did the urgent, elated look on his face. "Nicole..." His voice was raw, with a fragile note of disbelief. "Come back with me." I looked at him quietly and said nothing. He stepped forward, his voice urgent and pleadin

  • Cross the Boundary, Then Walk Away   Chapter 7

Nicole's POVMy life in Lumiville was busy and fulfilling. The academy's schedule was packed. Every day, I soaked up everything I could learn about design, fabrics, and tailoring. By day, I went back and forth between fabric markets full of beautiful materials and pattern rooms, my hands stained with paint and chalk dust. At night, I returned to my small rented apartment and sketched designs as I watched the twinkling stars outside my window, working until morning. I had not thought about Gunther in a long time. Occasionally, his face would flicker through my dreams, blurred as if I was seeing him through a layer of mist. One day, I had just left the studio when Nate from back home called. "Nicole, how have you been? Are you settling into Lumiville?" "I'm doing well, Nate. Thanks for asking," I said. He was silent for a few seconds before speaking hesitantly. "Well... Mr. Lane contacted me a few days ago. He asked for your contact information." My hand tightened around t

Mrs. Watson hesitated, as if she had more to say. "She has gone out to take care of something," Gunther cut her off coldly and bit into a slice of toast. It tasted like cardboard. He picked up his phone, opened Messenger, and found his conversation with Nicole. He typed: [Where are you?] Then he gave it another thought. Reaching out first would make him seem too eager, as if he cared. Gunther deleted the message, put his phone down with a blank expression, and drove to the office. He was feeling off all day at work. During a meeting with senior management that morning, he paused halfway through speaking. Out of habit, he waited for someone to bring him a cup of coffee served at precisely the right temperature. However, the conference room door stayed closed. He waited a few seconds. No one came in. The room was silent, and every member of management looked at him in confusion. He frowned, cleared his throat, and continued, but his thoughts were a mess. Just then,
