Evening had come by the time every guest had settled down for the wedding reception.
The garden was buzzing with life as everyone chatted and gossiped into the evening while waiting for the newlyweds to appear for some entertainment. Drinks were passed round to whoever cared for some, and Mrs Hart made sure everyone got a piece of the wedding cake. Jules, back in the bathroom, splashed some water on her face. And as the water dripped down, she shut her eyes, trying to calm her nerves. ‘It's time Jules.’ She said in her mind like she didn't want to break the silence in the bathroom. She opened her eyes and smiled—just as the door banged shut. “No. I don't think she—" Jules turned to view Cassie, who had just walked in mid-call. She paused on seeing Jules, her eyes widening slightly, like she hadn’t expected anyone to be there. Cassie quickly pulled the phone away from her ear and forced a smile. “Hi, Jules.” Jules placed her hands on the sink in front of her and returned the smile. "Oh, no worries. You can finish your call.” But Cassie moved further into the room. “Oh, don't be silly. It's just work. It can wait." She said and shoved the phone into the back pocket of her trousers, taking her place beside Jules in front of the mirror. “What are you doing here? You should be with Nolan—or some guests at least," Cassie said, watching her friend through the mirror. Then she frowned and tilted her head slightly, noticing the look on her friend’s face. "What's wrong?” Jules' gaze faltered for a second, but she stayed quiet. Cassie tucked her brown hair behind her ear and edged closer. "You're second guessing your big announcement, aren't you?” Jules just stared at her. She really didn't know where this doubt was coming from when she was so hyped about it just this morning. "You don't have to do it if you don't want to, you know that, right?” “Of course not.” Jules finally replied. But then her gaze dropped. “Just that I don't know how he'd feel about me being open about it. You know Nolan is a very private person." She explained. “Besides, you said it was a great idea." Cassie shrugged, her eyes shifting. “I could've been wrong, you know. I mean, you know Nolan more than I do.” Jules remained quiet. Her mind reeling. Nolan was a private person, yes. But this was something she was doing from her heart. And in the two years she'd known this man, he’d always appreciated her gestures, no matter how big or small. “No. I'll do it." She finally said, giving Cassie no room to argue as a smile formed on her lips. “It’ll be cute and he'd love it.” ***** “There you are. Where have you been?” Nolan asked as soon as she emerged from within the house, pulling her in for a hug and a kiss on the forehead. Jules giggled and pulled away just enough to look at him. “Just getting your surprise ready." “Oh really? Well, you know how impatient I can be sometimes. Quit making me wait." He teased. Jules laughed and grabbed his arm. “Well, in that case…” she said, pulling him gently toward the stage, her heart pounding with excitement. Every eye turned to both of them and Jules signalled to Cassie to get the cameras—and the projector rolling. Then she pulled a chair to the stage and made Nolan sit. “Get ready." She whispered, planting a kiss on his cheek as all the murmuring from the crowd died down. A microphone was passed to Jules and everyone, including Nolan, waited in silence for the big announcement. Though the night sky had taken over, the garden was still brightly lit—until the lights slowly dimmed, signaling something special was about to happen. And that was when Jules turned to Nolan with a playful smile on her lips. “Hi." She whispered. Nolan returned her smile and squeezed his knee lightly in anticipation. Jules continued, keeping her gaze on Nolan. “I know you might be wondering why I had to drag you into the spotlight this way. But I have a few things I'd like to say." She paused, waiting for a reaction. But everything remained still. “Two years ago, I had given up on fairytales… until I met you, Nolan. You reminded me what it felt like to be seen, to be cherished, and to believe in forever again.” She crowed awed quietly. Nolan's throat bobbed, his gaze locked on hers. “Nolan, you’ve given me more than love—you’ve given me laughter, hope, and a home. And tonight, I want to give you a gift too. Something that means the world to me… and will mean the world to us.” She paused and looked to the crowd for a second, hoping to catch Cassie's eye but she didn't see her. ‘Must be with the tech team,’ she thought, then turned back to Nolan, her smile never fading. “Before we dance the night away as husband and wife, I want to share a little surprise—something I hope fills your heart the same way you’ve filled mine.” The lights shut out completely, and the wall behind her came to life with a video. It was blurry at first, with giggling voices in the background. Jules: Are you recording? Cassie: Yes, a long time ago. Jules: Then take it to the screen. The camera slowly lifted toward a screen, and Jules held her breath, watching Nolan, eager to see his reaction. As the point of the video became clearer—thumping heartbeat blared through the speakers with an unclear grainy picture on the screen. Nolan stood up slowly, his eyes glued on the screen. Tears shimmered beneath Jules’ eyes and she moved closer. “I'm pregnant, Nolan. I found out two weeks ago. That's our baby." She whispered, waiting for him to come out of his shock. For a moment, everything was still. “Oh my god, they're having a baby!” someone yelled. As if giving the guests the confirmation, the room erupted into gasps, then cheers. The guests stood and applauded. Jules's mom wiped away a tear as the cheering lasted. But Nolan…turned to Jules, his face pale. His voice came out quiet—almost lost in the noise. “That’s impossible.”Nolan swerved onto another street, his brows knitted as he tried to focus his attention on the road. But what did she mean she and Ethan had been engaged for four years? That was way before Ethan and Jules got married. That was way before he and Jules even thought of marriage! He hadn't had a wink of sleep last night thinking about how possible that was. What was Ethan's plan that he'd keep Nora locked up in this town? Was it just to protect his secret, or was there something more? Honestly, he wouldn't have believed Nora was engaged to Ethan if she hadn't shown him that frame. It was a picture of when Ethan had gone on one knee and asked her to marry him.So why had he married Jules? Was he that bent on getting revenge on him that he had to use and hurt Nora just to marry Jules and spite him?And how the hell did Nora look so much like Jules? He gripped the steering tighter as he slowed down behind another car waiting for the traffic light to change. His eyes dropped to his phone, an
"How are you doing?" Jules asked with a small smile, a wineglass in her hand.Colton just let out a breath and leaned in his seat, his hand circling the rim of his canned soda. “I'm good, honestly. I mean, I am finally getting the hang of running a company." “I thought Ethan took it back." “Nah," he said, looking in the distance from the balcony where they sat. “But he did say if it goes bankrupt, he'd have my head." Jules smiled faintly and let silence stretch.“Ethan hasn’t been the same since you left,” Colton said at last.Jules flipped her hair over her head. "Oh, stop exaggerating. I've only been gone a few days.”"But I'm not. He's been showing up at Cassie's house with silly excuses to get me out.”Jules wanted to scoff. Ethan hadn't exactly called her again after he called her on the first day and she'd told him to leave her alone. Now he was feeling lonely? Ethan? It almost sounded funny in her head. She lifted the glass to her lips and sipped from it. But then her face
Nolan jerked in his seat at the furious look in her eyes, and even he smashed pieces of ceramic scattered on the ground. He blinked, then leaned forward slowly. “Okay, calm down, alright?” His tone softened. “I can help you.”She scoffed. Not the sarcastic type but the genuinely amused one that it actually broke into laughter.Nolan frowned, confused. He tilted his head. “What's funny?" “You…" she laughed some more, throwing her head back and holding her stomach like she'd heard the greatest joke of the year. The more she laughed, the more his patience ran out. But he just folded his arms and leaned into the chair, waiting for her to finish. Finally, she stopped, gasping for air, and actually reached for his mug and drank the warm tea. “Wow!" She said, letting out a breath."Care to share what's so hilarious?” "Oh, nothing.” She flipped her black hair out of her eyes and finally straightened her face. “It's just so funny that you—Nolan Cross—thinks he can save me." Nolan's frown
“She’s the one in the picture,” Kai said, shoving the phone in front of Nolan’s eyes.Nolan's heart sank for some reason. And as he reached to take the phone from his friend, his throat bobbed. He snatched it and turned to the woman before shifting his gaze to the screen. It was the picture that had circulated on his and Jules' wedding day that had made him think she was cheating on him and made him reject his own child. He zoomed into the photo, then turned back to the woman. The more he stared between the picture and the woman, the more unreal it felt. The resemblance was uncanny, yet there was a difference between both of them.‘Jules looks different when she's frowning.’ He said in his mind.“She's Jules' stunt double." Kai said.“I'm not a stunt double. And I'm definitely not the woman you're looking for. So goodbye.” She swung her hoodie over her head and walked past Nolan, heading out of the alley.Nolan couldn't believe this was real. So it really wasn't Jules in the picture,
“Grandma, look what I did!” Asher burst into the room, clutching a piece of paper.“What is it?" Mrs Hart asked, setting aside his action figure she was gluing back together."It's a boat.” He grinned, adding more color to the weirdly drawn picture, which only formed a shape if one stared at it long enough.Mrs. Hart smiled and took the paper. “It’s beautiful, baby. Where did you learn to draw like this?”He smiled at first, then scratched his hair like he was trying to remember. Then his face lit up. “Uncle Colton!”She raised her brows. "Really?” "Yeah!” He did a little jump, clearly proud of himself.Mrs Hart stood from where she sat, still holding the drawing of the purple boat. “Good job! I'm going to hang it on my wall, alright?" “Yeah! So everybody will see it." She just chuckled and pinned it on the side of the room. Then, without warning, she scooped him up in her arms despite his size and spun him around.Loud laughter rippled from his gut. The crayon in his hand fell to
Nolan tapped his hand on the steering wheel, his eyes keenly watching the entrance of a furniture store. He was parked a block away, stroking his chin with his other free hand.A light knock on his window shifted his eyes from the store. And he unlocked the door for Kai to get in.“The last time I checked, you were back here to search for your missing fiancee." Kai said, wrapping his jacket tighter around his body and clutching a takeout cup of coffee in the other hand.“Now you’ve got me sitting in your car like some sidekick stalker.”But Nolan didn't respond, nor did he take his eyes off the building, a frown etched across his face.“Do you want to talk to me, or should I just shut up and be your dummy?" Nolan turned to him, then turned away again. “You know, the last time I saw Jules." “Yeah yeah, that's true, what did she say she was doing here? I thought you said her mom was over there with her.”"Well, I didn't get to talk to her." Kai looked confused. “Why?" “Because she di
