Chapter 12

For three days, the cellar became Lydia’s entire world—a dark, suffocating box of stone and agony.

The hours bled into one another, marked only by the sound of their laughter and the pain that never stopped. They took turns with her, day and night, fuelled by a cruel excitement that seemed to grow the more she suffered. Every time she tried to shut down, to slip away into her own mind, they would find a way to bring her back—a fist to the ribs, a slap across the face, or the cold sting of the needle.

“She’s still got some fight in her,” Jax remarked on the second day, wiping sweat from his forehead. He looked down at Lydia, who lay curled on the damp floor, her skin bruised and her clothes little more than rags.

“Then we’ll just have to beat it out of her,” the scarred man replied.

He stepped forward and kicked her in the ribs—not a hard enough blow to break anything, but enough to make her gasp and curl tighter. “Get up, princess. We aren’t done.”

“She hasn’t eaten in two days,” the man with the dagger noted, leaning against the wall. “She’s looking thin. Skin’s getting pale.”

“Good,” Jax said, a sick grin spreading across his face. “Makes her easier to handle. Besides, she doesn’t need food. Just water and that needle.” He picked up the syringe, the glass catching the dim light. “The wolfsbane keeps her just weak enough that she can’t scream too loud. It’s perfect.”

Lydia’s fingers twitched against the dirt. Her stomach felt like it was eating itself, a hollow, gnawing ache that never went away.

“Hey, look at her,” the dagger man said, stepping closer and nudging her rib with his boot. “She’s barely even twitching anymore.”

“That’s the best part,” Jax replied, his voice low and satisfied. He knelt beside her, his hand gripping her hair to force her head up. Her neck felt weak, her muscles refusing to hold her weight. “The more we use her, the less she fights back. It’s like breaking a horse.”

The scarred man walked over, holding the syringe up like a trophy. “Third day’s dose. Let’s see if she can even swallow it this time.”

He pressed the needle into her arm without hesitation. Lydia’s body jolted—a small, pathetic spasm—as the cold liquid flooded her veins again.

“There,” the scarred man said, pulling the needle back and tossing it onto the dirt. “That should keep her nice and quiet for a while.”

Lydia’s head lolled to the side. The world was tilting, the walls closing in like they were made of heavy shadow. Her throat felt constricted, every swallow an effort that made her stomach churn. The hunger was a constant, dull roar now, eclipsed only by the throbbing ache in her body and the poison spreading through her blood.

“She’s almost gone,” the man with the dagger whispered, leaning down to inspect her face. He traced a finger over her split lip, which had swollen shut over the last few days. “Look at those eyes. There’s nothing left in ’em.”

“Not yet,” Jax countered, his voice rough. He stood up and grabbed her ankle, pulling her limp body toward him across the stone floor.

Lydia’s body dragged across the rough stone, her skin scraping against the grit. She didn’t even wince; she couldn’t. The sensations were distant now, like someone else was being hurt instead of her.

“She’s lighter than she was yesterday,” Jax remarked, his grip tightening on her ankle. “Must be the no food. Makes her feel like she’s made of nothing.”

“Perfect,” the scarred man said, stepping into her space. He leaned down and grabbed her jaw, forcing her mouth open. “Let’s see if she can still take it.”

He didn’t wait for an answer. He shoved his fingers into her mouth, stretching her lips wide while the others watched with hungry eyes. Lydia’s throat constricted, a weak sob catching in her chest, but the wolfsbane turned the sound into nothing more than a faint rattle.

“Look at that,”

“She’s still trying to fight it,” the scarred man said, his eyes gleaming. “Even with her mouth stretched open like that, you can see it in her eyes. She’s still in there somewhere.”

“Let’s give her something to really fight,” Jax said, stepping closer. He reached down and grabbed her other arm, pinning it above her head. “Hold her steady.”

The man with the dagger moved to her legs, his hands rough as he spread them apart. Lydia’s body felt like it belonged to someone else—a broken doll being moved around by hands that didn’t care if they snapped her. The hunger was a sharp claw in her gut, but the wolfsbane kept it muffled, turning the agony into a dull, heavy fog.

“She’s so small,” the man pinning her shoulders remarked, his voice almost conversational. “Like she’d snap if we pressed too hard.”

  • Crown of Frost and Gold   Chapter 52

The horn of the northern gate sounded three long, clear notes that echoed through the snow-capped gorges of the Frozen Spine, signaling a triumphant return.Down in the main courtyard, hundreds of pack members from Frostwell, Howler, and Ironwood had gathered along the stone ramparts. As the heavy iron gates swung wide, a dark shadow burst through the pine treeline at blistering speed. Zane bounded across the frosty cobblestones in his majestic wolf form, his dark coat dusted with snow and his brilliant blue eyes blazing with fierce, untamed energy. He leaped onto the central stone dais, skidding to a halt before shifting seamlessly back into his human form. His chest heaved with deep, steady breaths, sweat glistening against his brow in the crisp mountain air, but he stood tall, unyielding and proud.Beta Silas stepped forward, holding an ornate silver pocket watch in his gloved hand. He clicked it shut with a sharp snap, his amber eyes locking onto the young prince before a rare, br

  • Crown of Frost and Gold   Chapter 51

The frosted boughs of the ancient pine forest creaked under the weight of an early autumn snowfall, dusting the high trails of the Frozen Spine in crisp white. High on the Sentinel’s Crag—the highest overlook in the Frostwell territory—fourteen-year-old Zane Frost stood with his boots planted firmly on the stone, his breath rising in silver plumes against the icy morning air.He wore the dark leather tunic of the northern vanguard, trimmed with grey wolf fur, and his sharp blue eyes—strikingly clear, just like his father’s—were fixed on the horizon where the first pink and gold rays of dawn were breaking through the clouds.Behind him, the heavy snow crunched under a familiar, authoritative step. Alpha Asher Frost walked out onto the stone ledge, his broad shoulders draped in the dark, heavy mantle of the sovereign Alpha. Time had added silver strands to his dark hair at the temples, but his presence was as commanding and formidable as ever.Asher stopped beside his son, looking down

Ten years after the fall of the Silver Crest Dominion, the Whispering Ridge stood not as a barrier of blood and ash, but as the golden crown of a thriving empire. Where war horns had once echoed through frozen gorges, merchant caravans now sounded silver bells, traveling along stone-paved highways that linked the Frostwell territory, the Howler pack, and the Ironwood realm into an unbreakable trinity of peace.High upon the eastern battlements of the Frostwell stronghold, Alpha Asher Frost stood with his broad arm wrapped securely around Luna Lydia. Time had only deepened the majestic aura surrounding the Alpha pair. The fine lines around Asher’s icy blue eyes spoke not of stress or sleepless siege nights, but of a decade spent watching his people flourish. Beside him, Lydia remained the radiant pulse of the kingdom, her sovereign grace and sharp mind keeping the alliance anchored in unwavering justice. Beneath their skin, the golden threads of their mate bond burned as bright and vib

The amber sunlight bled into deep indigo along the jagged peaks of the Frozen Spine as dusk settled over the Moon Grove. Torches flickered along the stone perimeter, casting long, dancing shadows across the festival grounds where laughter, music, and the heavy scent of roasted meats filled the crisp mountain air.Silas stood near the edge of the stone terrace, his fingers loosely wrapped around a horn of spiced mead, though he hadn’t taken a sip in ten minutes. Beside him, Vanya was leaning against the stone balustrade, watching the young wolves dance around the central bonfire. But as a cool mountain draft swept up from the lower gorge, bringing with it a faint, unnatural scent—burnt copper and damp ash—Silas’s posture shifted in an instant. His amber eyes narrowed, his spine straightening like a drawn bowstring.Vanya didn’t miss it. She didn’t ask what was wrong; she simply set her cup down on the stone ledge, her gray eyes instantly scanning the treeline below the eastern gate.“W

The heavy oak doors of the lower corridors gave way to a flood of golden mid-morning sunlight as Silas and Vanya stepped out into the bustling central courtyard. The Solstice festival was in full, glorious swing. Lively northern fiddles chimed through the crisp air, mingled with the booming laughter of visiting warriors, the clinking of pewter mugs, and the rich, savory aroma of spiced roasted meats roasting over open stone hearths. For the first time in years, Beta Silas Black walked into a crowd without a ledger in hand or a scowl of intense vigilance locked onto his brow. Beside him, Captain Vanya had tossed her dark traveling cloak over one shoulder, her storm-gray eyes gleaming as she took in the vibrant energy of the Frostwell grounds.High on the dais, Alpha Asher was leaning back in his grand carved seat, his arm draped securely over Lydia’s waist as young Zane sat nearby, enthusiastically describing a practice maneuver to Alpha Mason. The moment Asher’s sharp blue eyes caught

  • Crown of Frost and Gold   Chapter 47

Dawn had not yet broken over the Frozen Spine when the grandfather clock in the corner of the lower map room chimed five times. The subterranean chamber was cold, smelling of old parchment, iron ink, and beeswax, illuminated only by a pair of heavy brass oil lamps casting long shadows across the central oak table.Silas sat at the head of the table, his dark hair neatly combed back, wearing a crisp linen shirt beneath a dark leather vest. Spread out before him were the grand topographic scrolls of the northern provinces. He had arrived at four-thirty, unable to pretend that sleep was ever going to come after their midnight meeting in the courtyard. The heavy oak door swung open precisely on the fifth chime.Captain Vanya stepped through the threshold, shedding her dark traveling mantle to reveal a sleek, form-fitting tunic of Ironwood slate gray. Her dark hair was tightly braided, her storm-gray eyes sharp and fully alert despite the ungodly hour. In her hand, she carried a tightly bo
