Chapter 3

Author: Crystal K
On the eve of the Starfall Festival, the pack hall was aglow with shimmering lights.

The moment I stepped inside, the whispers swirled around me like a foul wind.

"Look, the jealous shrew."

"I heard she's breaking the mate bond with the Alpha. It must be another one of her games to get attention."

I ignored them and made my way to a corner. The head ranger, Jake, handed me a glass of champagne and murmured, "Sienna, you were right. The soil contamination is severe, but the Elders are suppressing the news."

I nodded. It was what I expected.

Just then, the main doors opened, and all heads turned.

Horton stood there, breathtakingly handsome in a dark blue suit.

And on his arm was Chloe, dressed in a pale pink gown, looking ethereal in the moonlight. He leaned down to listen to her, a look of tenderness on his face I had never seen directed at me.

A violent, twisting pain seized my chest.

Even though I was prepared, seeing it with my own eyes still felt like my heart was being flayed.

I turned away sharply, unable to watch.

The ceremony began. Chief Elder Marcus held up an ancient box and removed a necklace made of a wolf's head carved from moonstone.

"This is the sacred relic 'Heart of the Land,' passed down by our ancestors! It enhances the wearer's connection to the Moon Goddess and amplifies their gift!"

A wave of awe rippled through the crowd.

My friend Jake, standing beside me, couldn't help but say, "If your Earth Empathy was amplified by that, you might actually be able to purify the forest."

My heart gave a sudden, painful lurch.

Yes, if only...

Before the thought could finish, a figure strode toward the stage.

It was Horton.

In front of everyone, he walked directly to Marcus and took the necklace from his hand.

My heart was threatening to hammer its way out of my chest.

He heard us! He heard what I said to Jake!

He crossed the room, the crowd parting for him. He came straight for me, his golden eyes burning with a focus and intensity I couldn't decipher.

"You need it," he said in a deep and powerful voice, but he didn't hand me the necklace. "For the tribe."

The entire hall fell silent.

I stared at the necklace in his hand, my heart feeling like it would explode.

He... for me...

No.

I snapped back to reality.

I followed his gaze and saw Chloe in the distance, tears welling in her eyes, her face a mask of wounded expectation. She must have thought Horton would give the relic to her.

And Horton, bound by his duty as Alpha, couldn't show her public favoritism. So he was using "for the pack" as an excuse, intending for me to pass it to her.

Sienna, stop deluding yourself.

"Thank you, Horton." I took a deep breath and accepted the necklace from his hand.

Then, under his cold, stunned gaze, I turned and walked to Chloe.

"Chloe, this is from Horton." I fastened the necklace around her neck, smiling. "He wants you to wear it and pray for the pack."

Chloe's eyes lit up instantly. She touched the necklace in joyful disbelief before turning a loving gaze to Horton. "Horton, thank you! I... I'm so happy!"

I turned around and met Horton's complicated expression.

I couldn't understand the emotions in it. He must have thought I was teasing him again, humiliating him with such "generosity".

"I need some air," I muttered, fleeing the hall.

I had done the right thing.

So why... did it feel like I had just made the biggest mistake of my life?

Tomorrow, our mate bond would be officially broken.

He would be completely free.

And I would begin my third wish, and my final offering.

Horton's POVI'll admit, at first, I hated her.I hated Sienna's intensity, her possessiveness, the way she used her family's power to force me into the mate bond. I thought I wanted an Omega like Chloe—pliant, gentle, and uncomplicated. Someone who would bend to my will, not challenge it. Someone who wouldn't force me to become a better man.But the mate bond, decreed by the Moon Goddess, could not be denied. And I had promised her mother I would protect her for life.So no matter what she did to me, no matter how much I resisted it in my heart, I would always protect her with my life in a crisis. It was my duty. A promise. Not love.Or so I told myself. Then she was reborn.I didn't know to call it that. I just knew that she had suddenly changed. She stopped clinging to me, stopped tormenting me with tears and anger, and even asked to break the mate bond herself. That hug she gave me... it confused me for a long time. The way she cried while holding me, it was like she was s

The poison burned in my veins, but my fury burned hotter."You should be dead," I gritted out, turning to face Chloe. Her face was a twisted mask, all its former innocence gone. A year on the run had made her feral and dangerous."Dead?" she cackled, a sound of broken glass. "Oh, I've died a hundred times. But my hatred, my glorious hatred kept me warm. It burned away everything soft, everything weak. I was forged anew in its flames!"The crowd began to panic and retreat, their screams echoing in the hall."Now, I'm going to kill you myself, just like you killed my allies." Chloe lunged at me.I reached for my weapon, but the poison had slowed my movements. The dagger aimed for my heart.Suddenly, a hand shot out from the side, grabbing Chloe's wrist with perfect precision."That's enough."The low, familiar voice made my world stop turning.A figure in a black cloak appeared between me and Chloe. With a sharp twist, he sent Chloe's dagger flying, then kicked her away."Impossible...

Sienna's POVA year later, on the night of the Starfall Festival."I heard she's back.""The Shadow Queen, that's what they call her.""How many traitors has she executed?""They say she cut a bloody swath from here to the southern border, leaving a trail of traitors' bodies in her wake."I stood in the shadows of the grand hall, listening to the whispers of my pack. My black hood hid my face, but it couldn't hide the fear in their eyes. A year of cleansing had earned me a new title: the Shadow Queen.I didn't care what they called me. I only cared about one thing."Any news of Alpha Horton?" I asked Jake, who stood beside me."Still nothing." He shook his head, his face weary. "We've searched three states, questioned every rogue pack. No sign of him.""Keep looking.""Sienna... maybe you should—""Keep looking," my voice was like ice. "He's alive."The music in the hall stopped. All attention turned to the stage. Elder Willis stood at the podium, the last surviving member of the o

Sienna's POV"You're awake."A strange voice pulled me from the darkness. I opened my eyes and found myself on a stone bed. The air smelled of herbs."Who are you?" I sat up, my voice hoarse. An old woman in a black robe stood beside the bed, her eyes a milky white."I am Elder Moira, guardian of the Moon Temple. And the one who saved your life."The memories rushed back. The cliff, the fall, the cold water..."I was dead." I touched my chest. There should have been a wound, but now the skin was smooth. "I remember dying.""Yes, you died. But someone paid an impossible price to bring you back.""Who?" My heart started to pound with a terrible premonition."Alpha Horton. He sacrificed his wolf, transferring his life force to you."My heart hammered against my ribs. "Where is he?""He has... moved on.""What do you mean, 'moved on'?" I leaped from the bed. "Take me to him."Moira shook her head. "Child, he cannot see you.""Why not?""Because he is no longer a werewolf. An Alpha who has

Horton's POV"Get out of my way!"I kicked Jake aside as he tried to block me, sprinting into the depths of the forest with Sienna's cold body in my arms."Alpha! You can't! That temple is hallowed ground!"I didn't look back. The Moon Temple was in the deepest part of our territory, an ancient stone structure covered in vines. Legend said a mysterious healer lived there, one who held the secrets of life and death. Most wolves dismissed it as a myth. But right now, I had no other choice.I kicked open the rotting wooden doors and stepped into the dark hall."You've come."An ancient voice drifted from the shadows. A figure emerged from the shadows, a crone so ancient she seemed woven from them. Her eyes were pure white, with no pupils."I knew you would. Love always makes people do foolish things.""Save her," I said, laying Sienna on the stone altar. "Whatever the cost.""The cost?" The crone cackled, a dry, rasping sound. "Do you know what you are asking? To bring back the dead

Horton's POVSienna jumped. The pain of the mate bond shattering nearly ripped my soul apart. The wolfsbane burned in my veins, a cold fire trying to leash my wolf. But my rage was an inferno that no poison could quench."Kill them."My voice was a low growl, a promise from hell."Alpha?" Jake looked at me, confused. "But the inhibitor—""Kill them all." I rose to my feet, the golden light in my eyes piercing the darkness. "Leave no one alive."Marcus stumbled back, his smug expression instantly replaced by terror. "That's impossible... you took the inhibitor... you shouldn't have any strength—"My fist connected with his face, and the sound of bone crunching was sickeningly satisfying."You forgot one thing," I said, grabbing him by the throat and lifting him off the ground. "And right now," I whispered, my voice a death rattle, "rage is all I need." I watched the life drain from his eyes, and with a final, satisfying crack, I snapped his neck."Shadow Guard!" I roared into the for
