Chapter 8

Author: Alyssa J
The storm at sea came without warning.

The intercom repeatedly broadcast emergency announcements, requiring all passengers to immediately return to their cabins and lock their doors.

I felt strangely relieved - at least I wouldn't have to face Kieran and Scarlett anymore.

Taking advantage of the weak signal still available, I quickly transferred all three million from the auction and connected to Butler's phone.

"After we dock, please give this card to Uncle. Tell him it's thanks for all these years of raising me. It's not much, just a token of my gratitude."

There was a moment of silence on the other end before Butler's worried voice came through.

"Miss, what's this about?"

"I'm fine."

I interrupted him, trying to make my tone lighter.

"After we dock, I won't be going back. I'll go directly to meet the Alpha that Grandfather arranged for me."

Before I could finish speaking, the ship suddenly tilted violently to one side.

The lights overhead flickered frantically, things crashed to the floor, and screams could be heard even outside my door.

My heart tightened as I shouted into the phone.

"Something's wrong with the ship! I need to find Uncle first!"

I pulled open the door to find the hallway in complete chaos. People were crying and screaming everywhere.

In this moment, all grudges and emotions were cast aside.

Fear left me with only one thought.

Find Kieran!

I just wanted to hear his voice, just wanted him to come get me.

I pushed against the panicked crowd, struggling toward his suite.

People kept bumping into me, shoving me around.

I tripped over something on the floor, a sharp pain shooting through my ankle as I crashed heavily onto the cold, slippery deck.

Affected by the silver injury just now, I couldn't shift or heal myself.

I tried to stand, but my right ankle couldn't bear any weight.

Just then, the ship let out a teeth-grinding sound of fracturing metal.

Countless gallons of icy seawater came rushing up from the lower decks.

"The ship is sinking!"

I sat paralyzed in the freezing water, shaking all over.

Crying, I pulled out my phone and dialed that number I knew by heart with trembling fingers. It rang only once before being answered.

"Uncle! Uncle, save me!"

I sobbed incoherently.

"The ship is sinking! My foot is sprained and I can't move! Where are you? Please come find me..."

There was a moment of silence on the other end.

Then came Scarlett's voice, laced with malicious laughter.

"Aria, you really are like a ghost that won't leave. Why can I always hear your voice no matter what? What, sprained your foot? Can't move? Then don't move. Drowning or getting crushed - pick one."

All the blood in my body froze.

Her voice grew more amused, filled with undisguised satisfaction.

"Perfect, saves me the trouble of getting rid of you later. About to die and you still call to make trouble? Let me tell you, Kieran is helping me find life jackets right now. He doesn't have time for unlucky trash like you!"

"Please, just give him the phone, please..."

I begged desperately.

The seawater had reached my ankles, so cold my teeth were chattering.

"Go die."

She spoke those words lightly, then hung up.

I called back frantically, only to hear the cold automated message that the phone was turned off.

Once, twice...

I could only hear the busy signal.

He really didn't want me anymore. Even my last hope of survival was cut off by someone else with his permission.

Overwhelming despair and cold instantly swallowed me.

The seawater kept rising, already past my waist. The bone-piercing cold and the agony in my ankle nearly made me lose consciousness.

All around was an apocalyptic scene, and I was abandoned at the center of this despair.

Just as my consciousness began to blur, a steady male voice cut through the chaos above my head.

"Miss, do you need help?"

Through blurred, tearful eyes, I looked up to see a tall figure standing before me against the chaotic light and shadow.

I couldn't make out his features, only saw a strong hand extended toward me.

Tears fell even more violently as I grasped at this final lifeline, nodding through my sobs.

"Yes, please help me."

He bent down, carefully avoiding my injured ankle, and lifted me steadily in his powerful arms.

Through the chaotic crowd and rising seawater, he quickly made his way toward the deck where the lifeboats were stationed.

As he settled me in a relatively safe position on the lifeboat, I instinctively looked back.

At the other end of the chaotic deck, I immediately spotted that familiar figure.

Kieran was protecting Scarlett, anxiously searching for an escape route. His jacket remained conspicuous even in the gray gloom.

Once, that figure had been my entire sense of security.

But now, my heart felt only deathly calm.

In the pouring rain, I turned my head away without any lingering attachment.

Looking at the polite yet distant smile on my face, Kieran's Adam's apple moved with visible difficulty. When he finally spoke, his voice was terribly hoarse, as if he had been screaming for hours."I'm going to the overseas territory. The pack affairs there are... complex. Very complex."He paused, struggling to maintain his composure. I could see his hands trembling slightly at his sides."In the future, I probably won't have any reason to return home. The assignment is indefinite."His voice dropped so low it was almost a whisper, yet every word reached my ears with crystal clarity."But if you ever need anything in the future - anything at all, no matter how big or small - just tell me. I'll come back immediately to help you."The desperate promise in his voice made something twist uncomfortably in my chest.I was genuinely surprised that he would make such a drastic decision. After all, our pack's entire foundation was here in the homeland. While the overseas operations were certa

When I heard the news that Scarlett’s pack had been destroyed overnight after being attacked by an unknown pack, I was sitting in Ethan's study, flipping through wedding dress catalogs. The notification popped up on my phone screen with a soft chime. I froze for a moment, staring at the headline as a complex mix of emotions rose in my chest.Blake pack - Scarlett's family pack - completely destroyed in less than twenty-four hours.I didn't need to read the details to understand what had really happened. This had Kieran's fingerprints all over it.As I sat there holding my phone, memories I hadn't thought about in years suddenly came flooding back.I remembered being seven years old, just two years after my parents had died. The other pack children had cornered me behind the school building, calling me names and pushing me around."Orphan! Orphan!" they had chanted. "Nobody wants you! That's why your parents are dead!"I had been crying and trying to get away when suddenly Scarlett appe

Kieran returned to the estate like a man whose soul had been ripped from his body. Each step toward the front door felt like walking through quicksand. His legs moved automatically, but his mind was trapped in that terrible moment when Grandfather had pronounced his exile. Not only had he failed to see me, but now he would never be able to appear before me again. The weight of that reality crushed down on him like a physical force. He felt like his heart had been turned into swiss cheese - full of gaping holes that let all the warmth and life leak out.No matter how desperately he tried to patch one wound, another would tear open and start bleeding. He pushed open the heavy front door with a trembling hand. The familiar scent of home should have been comforting, but instead it felt like a mockery. The house was filled with irritating noise and chaos.Several servants were hurrying back and forth, carrying boxes of various sizes. Their faces were tense with the kind of focus that came f

Kieran dropped to his knees with a heavy thud that echoed through the empty courtyard. Grandfather stood before him, leaning heavily on his walking cane. The old man's weathered face was a mask of fury and disappointment as he looked down at the heir he had personally raised and groomed for leadership.Kieran's clothes were wrinkled and disheveled. His usually perfect hair hung in messy strands across his forehead. His eyes were bloodshot and wild, like those of a man who had lost everything."Look at yourself!" Grandfather's voice boomed across the courtyard as he struck his walking cane hard against the stone ground. The sharp crack made Kieran flinch."Do you have even a shred of dignity left? Where is the honor befitting our pack's heir? Where is your shame?"Grandfather's chest heaved with the effort of containing his rage. His knuckles were white where they gripped his cane."Did you feed all your principles to the dogs?!"The harsh words hit Kieran like physical blows. He open

Kieran stood frozen in the doorway of the ballroom, watching helplessly as Ethan and I disappeared into the night. His heart felt like someone had reached into his chest and ripped out a vital organ, leaving behind nothing but a gaping, aching void. The sound of our footsteps faded into silence, but he couldn't move. Couldn't think. Couldn't do anything but stare at the empty space where we had been moments before.Around him, the party continued. Guests laughed and danced and clinked their glasses together, completely unaware that his world had just collapsed. He wanted to run after us. Every instinct in his body screamed at him to follow, to fight for what he was losing. But what right did he have?He had pushed me away for years. He had chosen cruelty over honesty, fear over love. He had brought Scarlett into our lives specifically to make me give up on him.And it had worked perfectly.Too perfectly.I was done with him. Really, truly done. The look in my eyes when I'd walked away

Ethan gently took my hand and led me away from the chaos of the party. His touch was warm and steady, completely different from the desperate grip Kieran had used on my wrist just minutes before. We walked in comfortable silence, leaving behind the bright lights and loud voices of the celebration.I felt like I could finally breathe again. The tension that had been building in my shoulders all evening slowly began to fade as we moved further away from the ballroom."Are you alright?" Ethan asked softly, his thumb tracing gentle circles on the back of my hand.I nodded, not trusting my voice just yet.The confrontation with Kieran had shaken me more than I wanted to admit. Not because I still had feelings for him, but because it had forced me to relive so many painful memories. We continued walking until the evening breeze carried the sweet scent of jasmine and roses to us.Looking around, I realized we had wandered into the back garden of the estate. This place held so many memories fo
