Chapter 4
Serena’s POV I woke up to warmth. To the slow rise and fall of steady breaths against my skin. For a moment, I was caught in the haze of sleep, my body tangled in soft sheets, my limbs heavy with exhaustion. My head ached, my throat was dry. I sucked in a sharp breath. I was naked. Panic surged through me, my heart slamming against my ribs as last night’s events came rushing back in fragmented pieces. The bar. The drinks. The men surrounding me. And him. My breath hitched as my gaze darted to the figure beside me. Broad shoulders. Tanned skin. A face that was both terrifying and breathtaking. Ryker. The man who killed my father. A choked sound rose in my throat as I jerked up, clutching the sheets to my chest. My pulse pounded violently as my mind screamed at me to run, to get as far away from him as possible. But before I could even move, his arm wrapped around my waist and pulled me back into the heat of his body. “I’ve missed you,” he murmured, his voice deep and husky against my ear. I stiffened. My breath came in short, rapid bursts, my skin crawling with fear. I could feel the sheer power in his hold, the way I barely even existed in his arms. He was too strong. Too dangerous. And yet… last night, I had let him touch me. I had let him— I squeezed my eyes shut, bile rising in my throat. He took me. My virginity. My first time. And I had let him, completely oblivious to the monster lying beside me. Tears burned behind my eyes, but I swallowed them down, forcing myself to breathe. Focus, Serena. You can’t break now. You can’t— I shoved against his chest, and he let me go, his piercing golden eyes meeting mine as I scrambled to sit up. His gaze was unreadable, but there was something dark, something possessive flickering beneath his handsome face. “What do you want?” I demanded, my voice shaking. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he just watched me, as if memorizing every detail of my face. Then, in a slow, deliberate voice, he said, “I’ve been looking for you.” I felt sick. His tone was soft, almost tender. Like he hadn’t just stolen something from me. Like he hadn’t destroyed my life. I clenched the sheets tighter around myself. “You—” My voice broke, but I forced myself to continue. “You took advantage of me.” His expression didn’t change. “You wanted me just as much as I wanted you.” My fingers trembled. “You’re disgusting.” His lips twitched into something that might have been amusement. “I can still taste you,” he murmured. My stomach lurched. He’s toying with me. I sucked in a deep breath, forcing the terror in my chest to settle into something sharper. Anger. “You killed my father.” He tilted his head, unfazed. “I’ve killed many people. You might have to be more specific.” My blood boiled. “How dare you?” I snapped, fury burning away my fear. “You murdered him in cold blood! I saw you! And you think it’s funny?” He hummed, as if considering my words. “Not funny. Just… unimportant.” Unimportant? A wave of red clouded my vision, and before I could stop myself, I lashed out. My fist connected with his bare chest, uselessly. It was like hitting stone. I went to hit him again, but this time, he caught my wrist effortlessly. His eyes flickered with amusement. “Are we fighting now? I’d rather take you back to bed, but if this is your idea of foreplay…” I let out a sound of frustration, yanking my arm away. Every word out of his mouth was infuriating. I needed to get out of here. Now. “I made a mistake last night,” I spat. “A mistake I’ll never make again. I was drunk. If I knew it was you, I would have rather died than let you touch me.” A muscle ticked in his jaw, the amusement on his face vanishing. Good. Let him feel something other than smug arrogance. “I’m going to make you pay for what you did to my father,” I continued, my voice steady. “You might have gotten away with it once, but I will never let you escape again.” With that, I spun on my heel and stormed toward the door, my pulse racing. I had barely taken three steps before something cold and powerful wrapped around my body. I barely had time to gasp before I was slammed into the wall, my breath leaving me in a sharp exhale. The movement was too fast too unnatural. He wasn’t human that confirm what I saw yesterday. My heart pounded as I stared up at him, my body pinned between his and the hard wall. His golden eyes glowed. His breathing was slow. Controlled. Then, right in front of me, his nails lengthened into sharp claws, his teeth extending into gleaming fangs. It was him. It was just like that night. The night my father died. Terror paralyzed me as he leaned in, his breath hot against my skin. “You’re mine,” he murmured, his voice dangerously low. “Mine alone. No other man will touch you. No other man will even breathe the same air as you.” I wanted to scream, to fight, but I couldn’t move. His head dipped lower, his lips brushing the curve of my neck. Then, without warning I felt Pain. A sharp, unbearable pain as his teeth pierced my skin, sinking deep into the flesh of my neck. I cried out, the agony burning through every nerve in my body. It was like fire, like lightning, like nothing I had ever felt before. My knees buckled, and just as my vision blurred, I heard his voice. “Go to sleep now, My queen.”Serena's POVI couldn't sit still after what happened in the living room. The tension between Ryker and Alec had been so thick I could almost taste it. Something was wrong, but neither of them would tell me what. But then the two of them lie that there’s nothing. And Ryker just brushed it off like I’m not worthy of his time and explanation. I told myself I didn't care. This was what I wanted, wasn't it? For him to leave me alone? For there to be distance between us?But I kept checking the clock on the wall. Seven o'clock became eight, then nine, then ten. I found myself walking to the window every few minutes, looking out at the driveway for his car. I saw Ryker driving out earlier and now I couldn’t help but anticipate for his return. "This is stupid," I muttered to myself. "Why do I care where he is?"But I did care, and I hated myself for it.I tried to distract myself by watching TV, but I couldn't focus on anything. I tried reading, but the words just blurred together on the
Ryker's POVI slammed my bedroom door shut and leaned against it, my chest heaving like I'd just run a marathon. Alec's words kept playing in my head like a broken record. *Do you really think she'll accept you when she finds out what you did to her father?*Of course she wouldn’t. I walked to my window and stared out at the woods beyond. The truth was eating me alive. Deep down, I knew Alec was right. Serena would never forgive me. How could she? I had killed her father. Even though I couldn’t remember who exactly her father is. I couldn't stay in this room. I couldn't think about this anymore.—-Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in a bar downtown. The place was dark and loud, exactly what I needed. I ordered whiskey and kept ordering until the bartender stopped asking what I wanted and just kept refilling my glass. The alcohol burned going down, but it wasn't enough to burn away Alec's words. Or the look on Serena's face when she'd brought me that sandwich. "Hey there, hands
Ryker's POV"You know," Alec said, his voice deceptively casual, "I've been wondering something." He leaned back against the couch, but his posture was anything but relaxed. "Do you really think Serena will accept you when she finds out what you did to her father?"The words hit me like a physical blow. My entire body went rigid, every muscle coiling tight as a spring."That's right," Alec continued, his lips curving into a cold smile that looked wrong on his usually warm face. "Did you really think I wouldn't figure it out?"I kept my expression carefully blank, but inside, my wolf was snarling with rage and something that felt dangerously close to panic. "I don't know what you're talking about." I forced the words out. "Don't you?" He tilted his head, studying me like I was a particularly interesting specimen. "Serena's father." His smile widened. "The one you hunted down and killed."My hands clenched into fists at my sides. "Careful, Alec. You're walking into dangerous territory.
Ryker's POVI forced myself to take a deep breath, pushing down the rage that threatened to consume me. Losing control now would only make things worse—and I needed to understand exactly what game was being played here.I cleared my throat deliberately, the sound cutting through their laughter like a blade. Both of them turned toward me, their intimate bubble bursting in an instant. Serena's eyes widened, a flush creeping up her neck that had nothing to do with Alec's attention. Alec, on the other hand, had the audacity to smile at me—that easy, brotherly smile he'd worn since we were children. He nodded at me, his expression shifting to one of concern. It was our silent language, developed over years of being brothers. He was asking if I was alright, if I needed anything.I nodded back curtly, telling him I was fine. But fine was the last thing I felt.Without breaking eye contact with Alec, I strode across the room to where Serena sat frozen on the couch. Her scent hit me immediate
Author's POVSerena practically floated back to her room after lunch, her heart pounding with satisfaction. She closed the door behind her and let out a quiet laugh, covering her mouth with her hand as if someone might hear her victory. It had been almost too easy. During their meal, Alec had hung on her every word, his eyes following the movement of her lips as she spoke, the way she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. When she'd laughed at his jokes—some genuinely funny, others forced—his chest had puffed with pride like a peacock showing off its feathers. The poor fool had no idea he was being played. She moved to her mirror, studying her reflection with newfound confidence. For the first time since arriving at this place, she felt like she had some control. Some power.Ryker thought he could manipulate her with his hot and cold treatment, his possessive touches and vulnerable confessions. But two could play that game, and she'd just proven she was better at it than he was.Me
Serena’s POVThe moment I stepped into my room, the facade I’d worn in front of Ryker crumbled. My back pressed against the closed door, and I let out a shaky breath that I’d been holding since his lips touched my neck. What was wrong with me?I pushed away from the door and began pacing across the room, my bare feet silent against the cold floor. My mind raced, torn between the memory of his gentle touch and the image that haunted my nightmares Ryker’s hands covered in my father’s blood. He’d almost convinced me. Almost made me believe he could change, that there was something real between us beyond this twisted bond. But I couldn’t forget. I wouldn’t forget. My father’s lifeless eyes flashed in my memory, and rage burned through my chest like wildfire. Ryker had taken everything from me—my only family, my freedom, my choices. And now he wanted my trust?I stopped pacing, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. Trust. As if I could ever trust the man who destroyed my life. But then why did
