Selvara’s POV
"Don’t stare at him like that, you’ll embarrass yourself."
That was Queen Celine, my stepmother, her voice rang as she dropped the wine she held in her hand. Her eyes flicked toward me in disgust. Zyros was back.
The entire pack buzzed around him like moths drawn to fire. He had been gone for years to train abroad, earning his title as the next Alpha. I watched him quietly from the corner I was in. He stood in the middle of the crowded hall, broad-shouldered, jaw tight, every inch of him made my body burn.
I hated the way my heart raced. I was supposed to be his sister. Step-sister, yes, but still. My wolf stirred restlessly, ignoring my efforts to stay calm. The whispers around me only made it worse.
‘He looks stronger than his father ever did.’
‘Do you think he already has a mate?’ ‘I heard he’ll have to pick soon. One of the Alpha daughters."None of them mentioned me. They never did. I was just an invisible Omega whose existence meant nothing to the Pack.
Alpha Orion, the Alpha of the SilentMoon Pack and Luna Celine’s husband, found me lying in the woods and took me in. Although foggy, I remember him treating me kindly until it was revealed by the Pack’s seer that I was possessed by demons and killed my parents. The council of elders advised Alpha Orion to keep me within reach to avoid me destroying the pack. Ultimately, the said demonic powers I possessed were suppressed and I was demoted to Omega and forced to serve as a slave for not just the royal family, but the entire pack as well.
Zyros’s eyes swept the crowd, sharp and steady. For a heartbeat, they landed on me, and I froze.
It was like being burned alive. My throat tightened, my pulse quickened. My wolf whispered one dangerous word I refused to hear. Mate.
Why would the Moon Goddess make that kind of pair? "No. No, no, no."
I dropped my gaze quickly, pretending to focus on the grapes on my plate. This wasn’t happening. My heat wasn’t due for weeks. There was no way my instincts were already acting up.
But I could feel it. The tug in my chest. The pull toward him.
I forced myself to look away, to think about anything else. Was it the time I got thrown into a dungeon with just panties and bras? Or was it when I was starved for an entire week? I hit my head hard, I really have to silence whatever thoughts are brewing inside of me.
The sound of heavy footsteps made me look up before I could stop myself. Zyros was walking toward us.
The crowd parted for him, wolves bowing their heads slightly. I really thought he was coming for me, I heaved as he stopped in front of Queen Celine.
“Mother.” His voice was deep, steadier than I remembered. He kissed her cheek quickly, then turned to me.
“Selvara.” He said just my name, but I could feel my heart in my stomach, my wolf whimpering.
I swallowed hard. “Zyros.”
He gave a small nod, but his eyes lingered, studying me like he couldn’t quite place what had changed. My skin heated under his gaze, and I hated myself for the way my lips parted.
“Welcome home,” I managed, my voice smaller than I wanted it to be.
For a second, silence stretched between us. I felt Queen Celine’s hand tighten on my arm, her nails digging into my skin. Zyros blinked, then finally looked away, greeting the rest of the pack.
At that point, the air left my lungs.I slipped out before anyone could notice. My chest was too tight, my legs too weak. I just needed air, a moment to breathe away from the eyes, the whispers, and him.
The night outside was cool as I moved to the courtyard. I leaned against a pillar, sucking in deep breaths. My wolf still hummed beneath my skin, whispering things I couldn’t allow myself to believe.
Fated mates? With Zyros? Impossible. Not just impossible, forbidden.
“Running already?”
I heard a voice behind me and spun around. Zyros leaned against the doorway, his eyes on me, unreadable.
“I wasn’t running.” My voice shook, betraying me.
He tsk-ed, pushing his weight off the doorway. “Strange. You used to follow me everywhere.”
That stung more than I wanted it to. “That was a long time ago.” I managed to reply.
He studied me for a beat, eyes sharp, as if he could hear the truth beneath my words, the racing of my heart, the war inside me. My breath caught when he stepped closer, his scent hitting me. It was strong and wild.
I backed away fast, gripping my dress to keep my hands from trembling. “You should get back inside. Everyone’s waiting for you.”
He tilted his head slightly, then nodded. “We’ll talk later.”
Talk? About what?
Before I could ask, he turned and walked back inside. I stood frozen, my heart slamming against my ribs, my wolf howling in my head. Mate. I shook it off. I couldn’t think like that. Not about him.
“Still chasing shadows, are you?”
I jumped at the voice. Two older Alphas stood at the corner of the courtyard, half-hidden in the dark. They hadn’t seen me yet, and I didn’t dare move.
One of them snorted. “Zyros will ruin himself if the rumors are true.”
The other chuckled low. “A fated mate too close to home? It would break the pack. He’ll have to choose between blood and bond.”
My blood ran cold. They were talking about me.
I pressed my back against the stone, covering my mouth to stop the sound that wanted to escape. My heart hammered so loud I was sure they’d hear it.
Fated mate? Ruin?I didn’t know what scared me more, the thought of it being true… or the thought of everyone finding out before I was ready to face it.
__________
Selevara's POVCome morning, the training yard was already full when I arrived with the other omegas. The wooden posts and sparring dummies were in sight. Warriors circled the space, their shouts and grunts loud as ever before. I hated this place. Every other Omega did. It wasn’t just the bruises and the endless drills, it was the stares for me. Every time I stepped onto the field, eyes followed me, it was always that of mockery. I kept my gaze down, clutching the worn practice dagger I’d been handed. My leg still ached faintly beneath the bandages, but I forced myself not to limp. If I showed weakness, they’d eat me alive. We paired off to practice stances. I moved quietly, careful not to draw attention, but of course, that didn’t last. “Look at her,” a voice sneered across the yard. “Moving like a crippled pup.”I froze, fingers tightening on the hilt. I didn’t have to look to know it was Darian, one of the stronger young wolves who never missed a chance to humiliate me. A few ch
SELVARA’s POVI didn’t leave my room all morning. My leg still ached, but it was nothing compared to the one I felt inside my chest. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Zyros’s face his hand slamming the wall, his voice low and rough, and how he had looked when he said “Tell me you don’t feel this.” Not like I didn't want to scream my struggles out loud, but I just couldn’t. By midday, Ravenna slipped into my quarters with a tray of food. She was the only one of the few who didn’t treat me like dirt. She set the tray down and looked at me.“You didn’t eat yesterday,” she said softly. “You need your strength.”I stared at the bread and broth but didn’t touch it. My throat was too tight to eat.Ravenna sat on the edge of the bed, looking deep into my eyes as if she could read into them. “Selevara… talk to me. What’s wrong?”The words burned in my chest. I wanted to stay silent, but they spilled out before I could stop them. “I think…” I swallowed hard. “I think Zyros is my mate.” Her
SELVARA’S POVThe first thing I noticed was the beeping. My eyes flew open, and I found myself staring at a white ceiling. The smell of herbs and medicine filled my nose. For a moment, I couldn’t move. Then it sank in after looking around, I was in the pack hospital. It seemed very weird to me because Omegas weren’t supposed to be here. We were treated in the sheds, with rags and boiled water, never here. If I was lying in this bed, then someone had seen. My wound had been exposed. I shifted slightly. My leg was now wrapped in fresh bandages. It didn’t throb as badly anymore, but the weight of the clean cloth only reminded me that my secret was gone.I listened carefully to the whispers that came just outside the room I was in. I heard two nurses' voices. “Did you hear?” one said quietly. “It wasn’t the guards. It was Alpa Heir Zyros who brought her here.”The other gasped. “Zyros? For an omega? That’s impossible.”“I saw it,” the first insisted. “He carried her himself. Told us to
SELVARA’S POVI woke up to rumours and giggles in the hall. I could hear them clearly from my room. I knew I was in some kind of trouble from the moment my leg got cut in that creepy trap. Even when I managed to step out to meet the rest of them in the kitchen.I greeted them, but no one replied, as usual.“Did you see the blood in the hall?” one whispered.“Maybe a rat,” another snickered.Their eyes slid to me. My cheeks burned, but I kept my head down, scrubbing the pot harder than I needed to.“Are you fine, Selvara? Your...” that was Ravenna "...your leg," she said closer to my ears.“I’m fine,” I muttered, forcing a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. I am fine, of course, I always am. But deep inside, I wasn’t. Not after what I had heard Queen Celine said, and worst of it all; Zyros's Silence.“All of you, outside. Now.” I suddenly heard Queen Celine from outside The omegas scrambled into a line, heads bowed, the usual chatter silenced all silenced by now. I dragged myself out wi
Selvara’s POVSomething sharp burned into my ankle. My eyes snapped open. For a moment I didn’t even know where I was. The sky above was black. My back hurt from the hard ground. Ouch, my legI sucked in a breath so hard my chest hurt. My leg was stuck. I tried to pull, and pain shot up like fire. The more I yanked, the tighter it bit. My throat went dry. It was a trap. Some stupid iron trap that hunters used for rogues.“Moon Goddess,” I whispered, biting my lip until it bled.I pushed at the metal with both hands and tried to wrench it open. My palms tore, skin scraping raw, but it wouldn’t move. My heartbeat went wild. If someone found me here, if Queen Celine knew I’d been sneaking out...The thought of it sent shivers down my spine.“No, no, no,” I muttered under my breath, pulling again. The trap screeched a little, my blood smeared over the edges. Finally, with all my weight thrown back, the trap snapped loose just enough. I dragged my leg out, sobbing when the iron teeth ripp
Selvara’s POVWith shaky hands, I opened the door. The shadow I saw reflecting under the door had long been gone, but his scent stayed in the hallway. With a tight breath, I slowly backed into the room and got in bed.Seconds passed and I was no longer comfortable in the room. It felt like it was choking life out of me. I slipped out of the bed quietly. The other omegas snored on, but I didn’t breathe until I crossed the hall. If Queen Celine found me out here again, she’d skin me alive. The back door creaked. I froze, two guards leaned against the wall, talking low.“…Zyros pushed the warriors harder today. If he keeps this up...”“Shh. Do you want trouble?” I pressed myself into the shadows until they moved off. My pulse hammered. One of the guards shifted suddenly, his nose lifting in the air. My stomach dropped.“Wait. Do you smell that?” he asked, sniffing. The other guard frowned. “You’re imagining things. Come on, before Zyros finds us slacking.” His eyes swept the shadows, to
