Moana’s POV

I slowly looked toward my bed.

And froze.

Sitting there, arranged with more care than anything had ever been arranged on that straw mattress before, were things that did not belong to me. Could not belong to me. I stepped closer, my bare feet quiet against the cold stone floor, and let my eyes move over each piece one at a time, almost afraid that if I looked too fast, it would all disappear.

Moana’s POVI slowly looked toward my bed.And froze.Sitting there, arranged with more care than anything had ever been arranged on that straw mattress before, were things that did not belong to me. Could not belong to me. I stepped closer, my bare feet quiet against the cold stone floor, and let my eyes move over each piece one at a time, almost afraid that if I looked too fast, it would all disappear.A pair of ankle boots sat first, the leather still stiff and unworn, dark brown and stitched with a neat, even hand. I touched them before I even realized I had reached out, running my fingers along the seams. Beside them rested a satchel, larger and sturdier than the worn one I had carried for years, its buckles polished bright. Next to that, a belt, and folded on top of it, a dress the color of warm earth, beaded along the neckline in small brown stones that caught the lantern light every time I shifted my weight. And draped over the edge of the bed, heavy and soft, a fur cloak thic

Moana’s POVAs I stood there taking the whole sight in, a familiar voice called from behind me.“Map Bearer.”I turned. One of Eldrick’s royal guards stood a few steps away. He bowed his head slightly toward me.The small gesture of respect surprised me more than it should have.“The Alpha requests your presence in your cellar,” he said.My stomach dropped.“My… cellar?”The guard gave a single nod.For a moment, I simply stared at him.Why would Alpha Eldrick want to see me in my cellar? He had never been there before. Not once.My mind immediately began searching for an answer, each possibility worse than the last.Had I done something wrong?Had someone told him about the markings?Had Astrid said something?Or—My eyes dropped instinctively toward the scarf around my neck.No.I had been careful. At least, I hoped I had.I glanced once toward Astrid’s cottage, then back at the guard.Oh no.I had spent far too long with Astrid.Perhaps Eldrick had been waiting for me.I looked at

Moana’s POVThe cottage suddenly felt colder, as though winter had crept in through the cracks in the stone walls the moment Astrid spoke. I pressed my hand against my chest, feeling my heart slam against my ribs so hard it frightened me. My fingers moved on their own, tugging the edge of my scarf higher, trying to hide something Astrid could not even see with her eyes, only somehow already knew was there. She asked again, slower this time, each word landing like distant thunder rolling closer.“Daughter of Kyrian… do you have the mark of the First Luna?”The fire crackled once in the silence that followed. I did not answer right away. I could not. My throat had closed around the words before I could force them out, and for a moment I only sat there, staring at her cloudy eyes, wondering how a woman who could barely see had somehow seen straight through me.Then the tears came, quiet and sudden, sliding down my cheeks before I could stop them.“Yes,” I whispered, the word breaking apa

Moana’s POVSela stepped into my path outside the library, her arms folded tightly across her chest. A sickly sweet smile spread across her face, but I had seen enough of her over the years to know it never meant anything good.“Well, if it isn’t Alpha Eldrick’s new Map Bearer,” she mocked.I didn’t flinch. For the first time in years, I didn’t lower my eyes either. I simply raised my head and held her gaze.“Move out of my way, Sela,” I said, keeping my voice calm. “I have orders from the Alpha, and unlike you, I have somewhere important I need to be.”The words came out sharper than I intended, and all three of them seemed to be caught by surprise. Anna and Elara exchanged a quick glance at themselves, their mocking smiles disappearing almost immediately. Even Sela stood there staring at me for a heartbeat, as though she couldn’t believe I had spoken back to her.I didn’t wait to see what she would say or do next. I just walked past them, adjusting the satchel resting against my hip

Moana’s POV When the council meeting finally ended, everyone rose at once to carry out Alpha Eldrick’s orders. The war chiefs strode from the Great Hall, already discussing which warriors would ride north. The elders departed with grim faces, their voices low as they spoke among themselves. Kaelen remained beside Alpha Eldrick while the rest of the hall slowly emptied. I returned to Alpha Eldrick’s study. I couldn’t leave my work unfinished. The bucket and brush still waited where the guards had left them earlier. Dust still clung to the corners of the heavy table and the shelves lined with old scrolls. I finished cleaning in silence, moving the cloth in slow, steady circles while my thoughts remained fixed on everything I had heard during the war council. Three hundred elite warriors. Six thousand rogues. Two nights until we rode north. As I continued working, the world beyond the walls of Night Claw Hold refused to leave my thoughts. I had spent almost my entire life with

Moana’s POV The heavy doors to the Great Hall groaned as the guards pushed them open. Warm air rolled out to meet me, carrying the lingering scent of stale ale, burning pine, leather, roasted meat, and old timber. My heartbeat quickened as I stepped inside behind them. My boots echoed softly against the polished timber floor, sounding far louder than they should have in the silence. The hall was nothing like it had been the night before. The music was gone. So were the laughter, the dancing, and the endless stream of carved ale horns raised in celebration. The long feast tables had been cleared away, leaving only a broad meeting table standing in the centre of the hall. Pale morning light poured through the high windows, stretching across the wooden floor in long golden beams. The silence somehow felt heavier than all the noise from the feast. My eyes slowly lifted until they settled on the broad meeting table. Several people were already seated around it. I recognized ma

Moana’s POV“What are you doing here at this time of the night, Moana?”The voice cracked through the hallway like a whip.My heart seized. Moana’s POV Tonight the air in the forest is so cold, it feel’s like needles on my skin. I stood in the dark shadows with my back pressed against a large pine tree, my hands shaking inside my pockets. They were covered in small scars from years of hard work. In the Blackthorn Pack, I lived like
