KEITH’S POV
“Why did you call me here?” I asked, my eyes darting around what seemed like an opening to a cave.
“I thought it was just me…” Alexander reached over and held me by my shoulders. “Figures you have a poor memory, too.”
“Sorry?”
“Are you trying to back away from your part of the deal, Keith?”
“Of course not… It is just that…” I shrugged. “Never mind. Please lead the way.”
My heartbeat accelerated a tad bit as we entered the dark, hollow space. The ceiling was so low that I had to keep my back bent to walk along. After walking a few more yards, the space widened, revealing something like a cavern.
This region was a bit more lit up courtesy of the numerous chinks in the ceiling through which sunlight streamed inside. The pillars of stalactites glistened in the glow, creating a soft glowing effect.
MELINDA’S POV My lips curved in a rueful smile as I leaned backward; letting the wind slash across my face. With a tug, I surged forward, moving closer to the garden. The chains of the swing clanked and she sweet scent of night queens filled my nose. My smile widened. This life was pretty good, too. Yes, I was a bit lonely and missed my mom terribly, but my mates were safe. There were people protecting me and they didn’t really bother me unless I tried to leave the guesthouse. At first, I was very angry at Keith, but now I guess this place had grown on me.Though Justin pretended to be coldhearted, he took good care of me. Having no work to do, I spent my time reading books, gardening, watching TV. I had started keeping a journal too.‘You call that a journal?’ Corel’s voice sounded. ‘All you have written about is Keith…. I think you have recorded every second you spent with him, every wo
Keith’s POV ‘Keith…. Can you please ask your men to leave the guesthouse for today? As you know, today is the full moon and…. Umm… Just ask them to leave, okay?” My heart skipped hearing Melinda’s voice mail.‘How is it possible? Melinda couldn’t be in heat, right? I mean, we haven’t marked her yet?’ Jake’s anxious voice sounded in my head, matching my own restlessness.‘I think you are forgetting. I kissed her and almost marked her that day…’“It doesn’t count. She wolves won’t go into heat unless the marking is complete.’‘We can’t say that for sure… I guess the only condition is bonding between mates. The legends don’t specify that the bond should be physical…’‘You are right… Mates usually mark each other during the first meeting itself… So, I don
MELINDA’S POV I groaned as I tried to shift to my side. My entire body felt so heavy and numb.“I think she is regaining her consciousness.”“That is surprising. Her condition was so bad and now… I don’t know what to say… It is as if she is healing on her own.” The faint mumbles pierced through the darkness surrounding me.I groaned again, but this time in frustration. Not only was I alive, I had gotten myself admitted to a human hospital. Shit! If mom ever found out, she would be pissed. That is, if I made it out of here.“I think the contusions weren’t bad in the first place. The machine must have malfunctioned or something,” a male voice sounded as something cold was touched to my neck.“It is a relief, though. If she had died or something, our hospital’s name would have been dragged into a harassment case.” A feminine voice sounded to
KEITHâS POV âAlpha, I have handled everything. The cops wonât bother you anymore butâĶ.â âBut?â âThey are adamant about not letting anyone meet Melinda before she gives her statement.â âThatâs fine. What about Melinda? How is she?â âI heard the doctors saying that she has regained consciousness.â âThat is greatâĶâ I took off before he could even complete his sentence; desperate to see her with my own eyes. I rushed to the lift but the doors closed before could enter. Cursing under my breath, I made my way to the staircase. Taking two steps at a time, I reached the second floor at the same time as the lift. My heart pounded in anticipation as I hurried towards the general section. I was about to take the turn that led to Melindaâs ward when Chief Edmund blocked my path. Pressing his baton against my chest, he spoke in a harsh tone, âDidnât I tell you that you canât meet Melinda until she has given
The door of the ward swung open, and the chief stepped out. Eyeing me with his piercing gaze, he stated, “You are one lucky b*****d! In don’t know what you have done to deserve that girl, but you better take care of her.” He pointed his forefingers towards his eyes and then at me. “I will be keeping a close watch on you.”“Can I see her now?”“Hmm… sure… We are done…” The chief’s gaze lingered on me for a moment, his eyebrows furrowed and then he walked away, shaking his head.Melinda scrambled out of the bed the moment I entered the ward. Pulling out the patch on her wrist recklessly, she rushed over and held me by my collar. “How could you Keith? How could you hide such a huge fact from me?”My lips parted, but no words left them. I could give a hundred excuses, but the fact was that I had hurt her. I was the reason there were tears in her eyes.Pressing
Melindaâs POVâI never want to see your face again, Keith Rivers. I am better off without you.â The words I spoke to Keith weighed heavily on my conscience. Though I was angry, I shouldnât have used such harsh words.Biting my lower lip, I projected my thoughts towards Corel, âHe wonât take my words seriously, would he?âCorel remained silent for a long moment before sighing, âGiven Keithâs personality, it is totally possible. Didnât you see his eyes when you said those words? He looked so hurt and angry.ââWhat am I going to do now, Corel?â I muttered, tearing my hair. âWhat if he refuses to talk to me again?ââWhat is the point of agonising over it? If you are really feeling guilty, call him and apologise.âA long, deep sigh escaped my lips. Corel was right. The best course of action was to talk to Keith. Drawing in a long breath, I grabbed my phone and dialled his number.BeepâĶ beepâĶbeepâĶbeepâĶ The call disconnected without even ringing. My eyebrows settled with a deep frown as I di
Keithâs POV âAlpha Bridgeton,â I flashed him a tight-lipped smile. âWhat a pleasant surprise.â My jaws clenched with the effort of trying to restrain my temper. âI didnât expect you to receive me at the airport given your busy schedule.ââI had to come.â His lips spread into a wide grin as he clapped my back. âAfter all, we have a magical pact binding us in an inseparable bond.ââAnd what is with you calling Alpha Bridgeton?â He said, holding the door open for me. âJust call me Uncle Alex as usual.âTo the bystanders, we might have looked like close kins having a light-hearted conversation when in fact he was warning me. It was his way of telling me that I couldnât escape my fate.Even his gesture of receiving me and holding the car door open for me was his way of showing that I was practically his prisoner till I was in Queensland. I had no choice but to play along, at least until I had found a way out.Getting into the car, I tried to say in a sincere tone, âThank you so much for
Melinda’s POV “Give me your hand, Melinda.” Kain said as he walked inside and sat on the chair placed opposite to my bed.“What?” I blurted out, a bit startled by his sudden request.“Why do you look like you have seen a ghost?” His lips curled into a sweet smile as he reached over; lifting my right hand and cocooning between his, “I am just asking you for your hand, not your heart.”“Umm… It’s just that… I am not comfortable.” I stuttered, trying to pull my hand back. Why couldn’t Kramen and Kain understand? Why couldn’t they just stay away? All these little actions; everything we said or did together was going to haunt me my entire life; no matter whom I chose.I was trying my best to keep myself from falling deeper into the spiral of emotions but these two were making it more and more difficult. He held on to my hand
âAlpha Keith,â the manager greeted, hurrying over to bow in front of him. âIf you had told me that you were coming, I would have made better arrangements.â This stupid woman, she was pitching for her downfall and honestly, after what she did to Aldwin; I didnât feel like saving her, either. So, I stood there, arms crossed over my chest, waiting to watch how the drama unfolds. The way she was looking at me flared Keithâs temper further. He gnashed his teeth. âThat is not the answer to my question.â âMy apologies, Alpha.â Mrs. Stellarâs face flushed. âWe didnât mean to cause you inconvenience.â I clicked my tongue. This woman, she still didnât understand what Keith wanted to know. The way Keith was glaring at her, I was afraid he would shift and rip her to bits. The woman must have felt it too. I could almost hear her teeth chattering with fear. I was about to talk to Keith when Luna Aspen spoke up. âPlease donât blame her, Alpha Keith. It is all that guardâs fault. Mrs. Stellar was
Melindaâs POV âWhere are Keith and Kain?â I asked, walking into the hall. âWhy are they taking so much time to get ready? We are just going for shopping.âKarmen rolled his eyes, his face lighting up. âThis is nothing, Melinda. Back in the days when we went to college, Keith and Kain would wake up at least an hour before to get ready.â He chuckled, âThey would try out so many outfits before finalising that by the time they were done we would all be fed up.ââKain is the kind of person who would do such a thing but KeithâĶâ My eyebrows shot to my forehead. âI canât imagineâĶââHe was the worst of us. Then again, all the girls flocked around us mainly because of his looks.â His lips pressed into a thin line. âNo wonder Jessica fell so hardâĶ.â He slapped his hand to his mouth and his eyes widened. âI am sorryâĶ I didnât mean to stir up unpleasant memories.ââItâs okay, Kramen.â I drew closer and took his hand in mine. âActually, I have been meaning to talk to you. But, every time I tried,
Melindaâs POV âWhether it is a few steps or an entire lifetime, you can always rely on me to carry you.â His words dripped in my ears like honey, melting my insides. I really liked this new version of Keith, who was bold, proactive and impatient.Resting my head against my palms, I looked at him, studying his features. His eyes were sunken and his cheeks had shrunken a bit, but that made his jaw bone more prominent, adding a devilish charm to his appearance.âWhat is this?â His words pulled me out of my thoughts. My eyebrows furrowed as I took the piece of paper from his hand. Why did it look so familiar? As I gazed at the paper, words started appearing one by one. âFor the past five thousand years, I have lived my entire life with a deeply set prejudice against werewolves. I always thought that werewolves were selfish, ambitious, and cold-hearted, but you managed to change my worldview. While seeing your memories, I realised that werewolves are capable of being honourable and selfle
Keithâs POV âPlease tell me that I am not dreaming,â my voice cracked as I looked into her deep, beautiful eyes. âPlease tell me that you are really here.âHer lips curved into a wry smile, and her mesmerising eyes sparkled with unshed tears. âI am really here, Keith. I am fine.âI raised my hand to stroke her hair but then dropped it; too afraid that she might turn out to be just an illusion. âCan you tell me that you are here once more?â I swallowed hard. âThis seems so surreal. I am afraid that you will vanish like a cloud of smoke at any moment.ââI love you, Keith.â She said in a voice thick with emotions and drew closer. Tears trickled down her cheeks as she cupped my face, raised herself on her toes and pressed her lips to mine. âDoes this seem real enough?âI shook my head as I grabbed her arm and tugged, causing her to slam against my chest. Wrapping my arms around her in a tight hug, I buried my face in the crook of her neck, whispering, âI missed you so much, Melinda. I m
Melindaâs POV I was drowning in the sea of darkness with nothing to anchor me. There was nothing to keep me afloat, just a sense of emptiness; an eternal void.âMellieâĶâ A voice pierced through the haze. There was something about that voice that was deeply comforting. All of a sudden, the emptiness stopped bothering me and I relaxed.âMelinda.â The voice sounded again. âHow long are you going to sleep? I really want to see the outside world.âMy breath caught in my throat. Why did the voice voice so familiar? Fuck! NO! This was impossible. It couldnât beâĶ.âCorelâĶâ My voice came out as a throaty whisper.âYes, sleepyhead.â Her voice was extraordinarily enthusiastic. âMiss me?ââAm I dead?â I thought, groaning as my stiff neck made a cracking sound. âIs that why I can hear you?ââYou will find out if you open your eyes.ââBut, I donât want to,â I mumbled. âThis darkness is so comforting. I donât have to worry about anything.ââThat is trueâĶ But if you donât open your eyes, you canât s
Keithâs POV In the elegantly decorated banquet hall, a large crowd had gathered; alphas of important packs, their families, the council members, and several other important members of the pack. We even had pacts and deals with some of them. There was once a time I was quite close to many of them. But, today, I felt alone despite the large gathering. All these ties and relationships seemed futile. They were all cheering and applauding me for my achievements, but my heart; it felt empty. There was no warmth in there, just a sense of void.Clink! Clink! Clink! Clink! My mother struck the spoon against her glass to draw our attention. âAlpha Rivers would like to raise a toast to everyone.âMy father stood up and held up his glass. âOver the past few months, we have been through a lot. But, thanks to the diligent efforts of my sons and your constant support, everything is back to where it should be.â His eyes sparked with pride as he continued, âConspiracies have been thwarted, enemies ar
Keithâs POV I sat beside the window, watching the sun rise; slowly scattering the darkness and casting a faint orange glow over everything. The flowers in the garden swayed in the light breeze, creating a peaceful rhythm.Something about the serenity of the garden irked me. The flowers, the breeze, the rising sun all seemed to be mocking me. With an annoyed grunt, I drew the curtains and started pacing in the room again, my gaze drifting to the door every few moments. When was Oleander going to return with Melinda? With each passing moment, my anxiety rose higher and higher on the scale. If this continued for some more time, I would probably explode. I increased my pace further, as if walking faster would help me reach Melinda quicker.âJustin!â Kramen gasped, and he sat up with a start. This distracted me from the spiral of anxiety and I hurried to check on Kramen.âJustin,â He muttered again, looking around anxiously, âKeithâĶ Where is JustinâĶ He is a traitorâĶ He tried to kill Mom a
Keithâs POV âDr. Stelsar,â I called out, hurrying over to him. âHow is my brother?âHe froze as his gaze met mine. The color drained from his face, and his lips pressed into a thin line. My heart sank when he placed his hand on my shoulder and shook his head. Everything seemed to slow down and my mind blanked out.âI am sorry, Alpha. We managed to save Master Kramenâs life, but I am not sure whether he will come out of the coma. Silver has combined with the blood cells of his body, inhibiting his healing. Unless the process is triggered again, he might never wake up.ââItâs fine. Itâs okay,â The sense of dread that had formed in my heart eased, escaping my lips as a forced gust of wind, âAs far as he is not dead and there is still a chance.â My eyes reddened with unshed tears and my voice got choked up. âJust tell me what I can do, Dr. Stelsar. Do you need any special herbs or medicines or maybe I can fly in some specialist? Give me the word and it will be done.ââI donât want to gi
Melindaâs POV âWe have done whatever we can, Miss Spencer. I am sorry to say this, but he might never wake up.â The healerâs words rang in my ears as I watched Kramenâs still form. âDue to the excessive amount of silver in his system, he has stopped healing. If only the treatment wasnât delayed for so longâĶ.âMy chest clenched painfully, and I slumped to the chair. âThis was all my fault. If I wasnât so quick in accusing him, Keith wouldnât have banished him from the pack. He would have been treated on time and he wouldnât be lying lifeless like this.âLifting Kramenâs hand, I pressed it to my cheek, âI am sorry Kramen for being such a shitty mateâĶ. For not trusting you moreâĶ for not giving you a chance to explain everything properlyâĶâ A choked sob left my lips followed by a whimper. This was all I could do now; apologiseâĶâMelindaâĶâ A familiar voice sounded as Oleander placed her hand on my shoulder. âAre you alright? I came rushing the moment you found out.ââOleanderâĶ.â My voice b
