Harper's POV

I was in an old oversized tee and tiny shorts, hair piled up messy on my head, no makeup and nothing cute about it. Just a normal Tuesday night trying to study for a test I wasn't ready for.

A knock hit my door around nine. Soft. Not his usual three-knock thing. This one screams I kno I was wrong but let me in please. My heart spiked up oh so ready to forgive but I forced my resolve on. I can’t be an easy pass like that or he’d keep doing it.

"Go away."

"Please." His voice came th

Harper’s POVThe delivery arrived on a Wednesday afternoon. I was in my room when I heard the doorbell and I didn't think anything of it until Elena knocked on my door a few minutes later."Package for you, Miss Harper."I took it from her, thanked her and closed the door. It was a small box, unmarked except for my name on a plain white label. There was no return address. No sender information. No clue where it had come from.I sat down on my bed and opened it. Inside was a dried rose.A Peace rose. Yellow with pink edges. The same kind my father used to grow in our backyard. I stared at it for a long moment. There was no note or card or explanation. Just the rose, dried and pressed and perfectly preserved, lying in a bed of tissue paper. I told myself it was nothing.I told myself someone had heard me talking about Peace roses, maybe one of the gardeners I was working with thought I might like to have one. I told myself it was a kind gesture, not a strange one.But why would they s

Harper’s POVZuri appeared in the doorway a few minutes later, her hair pulled back and her hands shoved deep into the pockets of her jacket. She looked nervous in a way I had never seen begore . There is not that easy confidence she usually carried and it made something in my chest tighten."Hey," she murmured, hovering on the threshold like she wasn't sure she was allowed inside."Hey. Come in."She stepped past me and sat on the edge of my bed and I closed the door and leaned against my desk. The room felt smaller than it usually did, the walls closing in around us and I didn't know what to do with my hands."So," Zuri started then stopped."So," I echoed."This is weird." She laughed but it came out shaky. "I'm making it weird.""You're not making it weird." I forced a smile seeing how good she looks with her dark hair. "Yes I am. I can feel myself making it weird."I laughed despite myself and some of the tension in the room loosened. She smiled at me, that wide, bright smi

Harper’s POVTwo days had passed since the kiss and I still hadn't figured out how to breathe around it. I woke up on Monday morning with the guilt sitting on my chest like something physical, heavy and suffocating and for a long moment I just lay there staring at the ceiling and replaying it in my head. The way Zuri's lips had felt against mine, soft and insistent. The way I leaned into it, a traitorous surrender of my own body. The way I hadn't pulled back nearly as fast as I should have.I hadn't spoken to Zuri since. The not speaking to Declan part wasn't intentional, not really. We'd both been busy and the house had been full and there hadn't been a moment alone, but there was something else underneath it too. Something that felt like I was avoiding him. I couldn't look at him without thinking about what I'd done, without seeing Zuri's face superimposed over his.I dragged myself out of bed and into the shower and stood under the hot water until it ran cold, hoping it could wa

His POVThe photograph is old now, creased at the corners from being handled too many times. She is sixteen in it, standing beside her father's car with the sun behind her and a smile on her face that I have not seen since. I took it from across the street. I had been watching her for weeks by then, learning her schedule, learning the places she went and the people she talked to and the way she laughed when she thought nobody was looking. I had a camera in my bag and I had been too afraid to use it until that moment. She was just so beautiful. I could not help myself.I keep the photograph in a box under my bed, along with the others. The letters I never sent. The dried flowers I picked from her garden. The notes I wrote and rewrote and never had the courage to deliver. They are all there, a record of every moment I have ever spent thinking about her, every moment I have ever spent loving her from a distance. She does not know about the box though. She only knows about the message.

Declan’s POVThe lilies were already in my car when I picked her up. I had stopped at the florist on the way to the manor, something I had never done before which I had spent twenty minutes debating before I walked inside. The woman behind the counter had asked me what I was looking for and I had said lilies without thinking, because I knew. I had always known. I had been keeping the things she loved for years now, filing them away in the back of my mind like I was preparing for a test I would never take. She noticed them the second she got in the car."Declan." Her voice was quiet. "What are those?"I glanced at the back seat. "Flowers.""I can see they are flowers. Why are there flowers in your car?""Because I bought them."She stared at me with round eyes. "For who?""For you." I pulled out of the driveway and tried to keep my voice casual. "You have been stressed. I thought you might like them."She did not say anything for a long moment. I kept my eyes on the road and tried no

Harper’s POVI started digging on a Sunday afternoon. The manor was quiet, everyone else occupied with their own things. I had locked myself in my room with my laptop and my phone and a knot in my stomach that would not go away. I had been thinking about Roland for days now, thinking about the bookshop, the details he should not have known. And I had decided, sometime between the library and now, that I needed to find out if I was imagining things or if there was something real to be afraid of.I started with the yearbook. It was stupid probably. The kind of thing that would not prove anything. But I remembered that Roland had been in my English class freshman year and I thought maybe there would be a picture of him somewhere maybe a club or a team or something that would tell me more about who he was.I found him in the photography club.He was standing in the back of the group photo, half hidden behind someone taller, with a camera around his neck and a look on his face that I cou
