LOGINHarper’s POV
The drive home from campus was spent with my hands tight on the steering wheel and my jaw locked hard enough to hurt. Blair had texted me three times about Mason, each message progressively more aggressively enthusiastic with emojis I didn’t have the energy to unpack. I ignored all of them. What I needed was to move. To burn through this irritation the way I burned through everything else that built up in my chest and refused to settle. The private gym Theodore had shown me yesterday was supposed to be my escape. My space. Somewhere in Kings Manor that still felt like it belonged to me alone. I pushed through the glass doors already changed into black leggings, an oversized band tee and the sports bra underneath that gave me the support I needed without the bulk. My hair was in a tight bun. I thought the gym was empty but it wasn’t. Declan was halfway through a heavy set on the bench press, back arched, chest heaving not a single piece of fabric between skin and the weights. Sweat carved paths down his shoulders. His breathing was somehow controlled despite the heavy weight on him. He finished the rep and racked the bar with the kind of sureness that said he’d been at this for a while. He didn’t look at me. I considered turning around. Walking back out. Letting him have this space the way he seemed to take everything else. Then I thought: No. Why should I? I walked in and Theodore said I could use it. The music from his speaker filled the silence — something instrumental and heavy. I moved to the far end of the gym and started my warm up routine, going through the motions without thinking about it. My body knew what it needed. Just a bit of stretches and light cardio. I could feel him watching. His attention landed on me like a hand pressing into my spine. I refused to acknowledge it. I finished my warm up and moved to the leg press. Started loading plates with controlled movements. The resistance was good but the burn was better. I used to call myself a masochist for loving the burn that comes with working out. A minute later, Declan appeared at the leg press beside mine. Coincidence? Maybe. Probably not. I didn’t say anything and kept going. Push. Hold. Release. Push again. He started his set, the machine beside me groaning under weight that had to be heavier than mine. I didn’t look over. Didn’t give him the satisfaction of noticing. I finished and moved to the hack squat machine. He finished his set and moved to the hack squat machine beside it. The cable machine with the rope attachment. He showed up there seconds after I did. Close enough that I’d have to be blind not to notice. Close enough that every breath he took felt intentional. The pattern is registered and it turns into into hot in my chest. I loaded the barbell for deadlifts. Something I could sink into and let consume my attention except his attention was consuming everything. I pulled the first rep. He stepped up to the barbell beside mine and started loading his own. That was it! “Are you following me?” “No.” My hands gripped the bar. “You’ve used four machines I was already using.” “They’re machines.” “There are twenty others.” He positioned himself under his barbell. “I like these.” I laughed once. “No. You like bullying me.” He shrugged and the movement shifted his entire body in that infuriating way he had. “It’s working.” I tried to ignore him snd sink back into the rhythm of the lift but he was watching me load another plate and his silence felt like it had weight. “You missed a spot.” he murmured out of the blue. I straightened turning. “What?” “When you decided to lose weight.” The words landed exactly where he’d aimed them. Not because they were true. Because I was tired. Because I spent years hearing versions of that comment, absorbed it into my bones, built my entire relationship with my body around it. I said nothing. Just quietly started unloading the bar. My hands moved even though everything in me had gone numb. I should be used to it by now. It’s fucking Declan Kings but for some reason it hits a spot today. The towel I used to dry my hands was softer than it should’ve been. “You know what?” My voice came out steady even though I didn’t feel steady. “I’m never using this gym again.” He was quiet for a second then he grinned. “Good riddance.” I laughed. It was bitter and it was real and it was all I had left. “Congratulations.” I walked out. The door slammed behind me hard enough that the sound echoed through the empty halls of Kings Manor. —— Behind her, Declan stood in front of the barbell she left loaded. He stared at the plates then the bar then the empty space where she’d been. Without thinking, he started unloading it. Plate by plate. The exact way she liked it. The order she always used. Left side first then right then center. Because he’d watched her do it a hundred times when he wasn’t supposed to be watching. His hands stopped. He looked at what he just did. What he was still doing. “Fucking fuck!” He threw away a plate at the wall.Harper’s POV My phone buzzed on the desk during econ, screen lighting up before I could flip it face down. Mason: still owe you that coffee. tomorrow? I stared at it longer than I needed to. Blair caught the movement out of the corner of her eye and leaned across the aisle, her pen abandoned mid-note. "Who's that?" "Nobody." "Harper Carter." She drew my name out like a warning. "Your ears are doing the thing." "What thing?" "The red thing. They only do that for embarrassment or crushes and you're not embarrassed right now." I turned my phone over so the screen pressed flat against the desk. "It's Mason. He's just following up about coffee." "Just following up." She repeated it back to me with a smile spreading slow across her face. "Right. Because guys text girls three days in a row about coffee that means nothing." "It's been two days." "Even worse." I shot her a look and she raised both hands like she was surrendering, though the grin never left her face. Th

Harper’s POVBlair was late again. I dropped my bag onto the desk she’d claimed for us on the first day of the semester and pulled out my notebook. Five minutes until class started.“Mind if I sit here until your friend gets back?”I looked up. The guy standing beside my desk was tall, broad-shouldered and wearing the Westwood Wolves football jacket. He has sand brown hair, warm brown eyes and familiar face. “Go ahead.” nodded toward the empty chair.“I’m Mason.” He slid into the seat, setting his backpack on the floor.“I know.” I said and one of his brows lifted.“You know me?”“You’re always getting suspended with Declan.” I smiled despite myself.“Fair enough.” A laugh escaped him.“I don’t actually know what you study. I just know whenever there’s a fight on campus, your names somehow end up together.”“I’d like to blame him but that’d only be half true.” He gave a cheeky shrug. “So you’re admitting you’re the problem?” I raised a brow at that. He is charming. “I’m admitting w
Declan’s POVThe first thing I did after walking into my room was lock the door. The second was to punch the wall until the frame rattled. Pain shot through my knuckles and I welcomed it.“Fuck!”I grabbed the crystal tumbler sitting on my dresser and hurled it across the room. It exploded against the wall, whiskey soaking into the cream wallpaper before shards of glass scattered across the hardwood floor. I didn’t care about the clusterfuck around me. Out of every fucking woman in Westwood, it had to be her mother. Harper Carter. For so many years I told myself to wait. Wait until she stopped looking at me like I was something she’d scraped off the bottom of her shoe and she finally looked at me the way every other girl did. Then I can finally get her into my bed. Now? It is looking very much impossible because my father decided to marry her mother. I bitter humorless laugh escaped me. Harper Carter is my Stepsister? The word tasted like poison.I dragged both hands through my hai
Harper’s POVThe gates slid open without a sound. I stared out the passenger window as our SUV rolled through them, deeper into Kings Manor. Calling it a house would be an insult. It looked more like a luxury hotel hidden behind towering hedges and iron gates. A fountain sat in the middle of the circular driveway, water glistening beneath the afternoon sun. The mansion itself stretched wider than I could see from where I was sitting, all white stone, floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies that overlooked perfectly trimmed gardens.“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Mom sighed staring at our new ‘home’ that isn’t a hellhole. I hummed neither agreeing nor disagreeing. Beautiful wasn’t the word I’ll use for this place. It looks expensive and cold and untouchable. The car came to a stop. Before the driver could open my door, I was already climbing out because I don’t like the formalities. The air smelled cleaner here somehow. My eyes fell to the line of house staff standing neatly by the entrance
Harper’s POVI spent most of the car ride to the wedding venue staring out the window. Apparently, the decor in my house was just my mom celebrating leaving ‘the hell hole’ as she likes to call it. The wedding celebration wasn't going to take place there.I wonder why she felt the need to invite people there if she feels so embarrassed to have lived in a place such as this. I don't always try to make sense of what my mom does and this is one of those moments. She is chattering excitedly beside me inside the car about the wedding reception, the designer dress waiting for me in some huge room and how important it is to make a good impression. She has also listed many other people from Westwood they invited to the wedding.“Don’t forget that your dazzling smile tonight, mon cherie.” She continued, typing fast in her new phone. My eyes dropped on the wedding ring again and I felt all sort of emotions.“Its hard to celebrate someone else’s surprise wedding on my birthday.” I tried hard not
