LOGINHarper’s POV
Blair was late again. I dropped my bag onto the desk she’d claimed for us on the first day of the semester and pulled out my notebook. Five minutes until class started. “Mind if I sit here until your friend gets back?” I looked up. The guy standing beside my desk was tall, broad-shouldered and wearing the Westwood Wolves football jacket. He has sand brown hair, warm brown eyes and familiar face. “Go ahead.” nodded toward the empty chair. “I’m Mason.” He slid into the seat, setting his backpack on the floor. “I know.” I said and one of his brows lifted. “You know me?” “You’re always getting suspended with Declan.” I smiled despite myself. “Fair enough.” A laugh escaped him. “I don’t actually know what you study. I just know whenever there’s a fight on campus, your names somehow end up together.” “I’d like to blame him but that’d only be half true.” He gave a cheeky shrug. “So you’re admitting you’re the problem?” I raised a brow at that. He is charming. “I’m admitting we’re both terrible influences.” “That’s surprisingly self-aware.” I chuckled. “It took years of practice.” He patted his chest like he was proud of it. The conversation came easier than I expected. He asked about my major, complained about eight a.m. lectures and confessed he’d nearly failed statistics because he’d slept through the midterm. For the first time since yesterday, I forgot about Kings Manor, my mother, Theodore and Declan. “So” Mason said, leaning back in his chair, “Blair wasn’t exaggerating.” “About what?” I frowned. “She said you have the driest sense of humor she’s ever met.” “She’s dramatic.” “So that’s a yes?” “I’ll let you decide.” “I like that.” He grinned. The smile that tugged at my lips came without effort. The classroom suddenly went quiet and I didn’t notice at first. Mason did though because his smile faded as he looked past me toward the door. I turned in my seat. Declan just walked in. His backpack hung lazily from one shoulder, his expression unreadable. His green eyes landed on Mason then on me. Then on the empty coffee cup sitting between us. Something hardened in his face as his jaw flexed once. The air in the room shifted. I cannot explain it but one moment the classroom had been filled with chatter and the next it feels colder. Declan finally started walking toward us, his eyes never left Mason. He stopped beside our row of desks. His gaze flicked from Mason to me before settling on Mason again. A slow, humorless smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Didn’t know you were into charity work.” He muttered dryly. The classroom fell more silent. Even the students who were been halfway through their conversations looked over. “The hell does that mean?” Mason frowned. Declan didn’t answer him, he looked at me. The same lingering stare that always made my skin crawl. I pushed my chair back and stood. “What is wrong with you?” “Nothing.” His eyes finally met mine. “Clearly something.” I frossed my arms in front of me. “I was talking to him.” He slipped one hand into his pocket, completely unfazed. “And you were insulting me.” “I don’t remember saying your name.” “You didn’t have to.” “Declan, seriously. What’s your problem?” Mason stood. “I don’t have one.” Declan let out a quiet scoff. He brushed past us as if the conversation bored him dropping into his seat at the back of the classroom. Not once did he look away from me and I hated that. Class couldn’t end fast enough. By the time the professor dismissed us, my patience had worn thin. I was stuffing my notebook into my bag when Mason caught up with me outside the lecture hall. “Hey.” I looked over my shoulder. He rubbed the back of his neck with an easy smile. “So…there’s a coffee place across the street. Wanna grab one?” He asked bouncing cutely on his heels. Before I could answer another voice cut in. “Coach is looking for you.” Both of us turned to find Declan standing a few feet away, his expression unreadable. “What?” Mason asked with a frown “He’s been asking where you are.” “I completely forgot we had film review.” Mason muttered a curse under his breath. He looked back at me apologetically. “I’ll text you?” “Sure.” “I owe you that coffee.” I nodded wirh a smile watching him jog down the hallway. When he disappeared around the corner, I turned back to Declan. He was still standing there watching me. “What?” “Nothing.” He shrugged. “You scared him off.” I accused because I know his games. This isn't the first time. “I saved him.” “From what?” I folded my arms. “You.” His gaze swept over me before returning to my face. “You’re delusional.” I brushed past him, my shoulder knocking his as I walked away. I made it halfway down the hallway before I felt his eyes following me like always. *** Declan’s POV I caught Mason before he made it onto the field. My hand fisted the front of his jersey and shoved him back against the lockers. “What the hell?” He snapped scowling at me. “Stay away from her.” I ground out through gritted teeth and the haze of red I’ve been seeing since I saw them together earlier. “Harper?” He tilted his head with a frown. I didn’t answer and I watch a slow grin spread across his face. “You’re serious.” “I don’t repeat myself.” “Dude, she’s your stepsister.” He laughed shaking his head. “So?” My jaw clenched regretting telling them that piece of information. “So she’s fair game.” He shrugged pushing me away. “No.” “Says who?” “I do.” “You’ve spent the last year making that girl’s life miserable. You don’t even like her.” He studied me for a second while speaking. I looked away. That was all it took begore his grin disappeared. “…Oh.” “What?” I frowned. “Holy shit.” He stared at me for another second then let out a quiet laugh. “What?” “You actually want her.” “Watch your mouth.” I grabbed his jersey again. “I get it now.” He slowly raised both hands. “You don’t know anything.” “Maybe. But I know one thing.” He pulled free from my grip. He looked me dead in the eye. “You’re in trouble.”Harper’s POV"We should go." I whispered it though my hands hadn't loosened their grip on his shoulders at all."Yeah." He didn't move either, chest still rising and falling hard against mine. "Probably should."But neither of us moved. The air in the private gym was thick with the smell of sweatl. My body was still humming, my clit throbbing with a remaining ache that demanded more. I don’t know why his presence always got me feeling like a rabbit in hit. Then a thought hit me like a bucket of ice water. My eyes flew wide and I shoved him away with a sudden, frantic burst of energy."Are there cameras?" I gasped, scrambling to sit up and clutch my shirt to my chest. "Oh my god, Declan, are there cameras in here?"His expression softened, the hunger in his eyes replaced by something reassuring. "No," he said, his voice low and calm. "No cameras. This is my private gym, remember? No one sees anything in here without my permission."The tension drained out of my shoulders but the adren
Harper's POVDeclan pulled his shirt off before we even started, tossing it onto the bench like it was nothing and I definitely stared longer than I meant to. Sweat already beaded on his shoulders, tracing paths down the defined muscles of his back."You're doing that on purpose." I said it, trying to sound annoyed instead of exactly what I actually felt."Doing what?" He raised a brow, way too innocent for someone whose back looked like that. Every muscle down his shoulder blades pulled tight when he reached for the barbell, two long lines flaring out from his spine like a pair of wings folded down."That. The whole shirtless thing. It's a lot for a Tuesday.""It's hot in here." He shrugged, grabbing chalk for his hands. "Not my fault you can't handle it.""I can handle plenty.""Prove it. Spot me on deadlifts."I walked over, watching him load the bar with more weight than I expected, watching the way his abs pulled tight when he bent to grip it. He caught me staring and grinned, sl
Declan's POVHayes' basement smelled like old pizza boxes and whatever cologne Cole had way too much of on. Controllers scattered across the couch, some shooter game loading up on the TV and a stack of empty cups already piling up on the side table even though we'd only been here an hour."Bro, you're actually trash at this." Cole shoved my shoulder as my character got sniped for the third time in a row. "How do you throw a football like a god and aim like a blind man?""Different skill set." I leaned back tossing the controller onto the cushion beside me. "You want to talk skill, ask me about the season I'm having right now.""Here we go." Hayes rolled his eyes, grabbing another slice from the box. "Somebody let the ego out of its cage.""It's not ego if it's true.""Bro shut the fuck up." Mason laughed, mouth still half full, elbowing me hard enough that I nearly spilled my drink. "You've thrown what, six touchdowns this season? Chill out.""Seven." I corrected him easy, grinning. "
Harper's POVThe gardener called in sick and somehow that turned into Declan and me kneeling in the flower beds behind the house on a Saturday afternoon, pulling weeds neither of us actually knew how to identify."This one?" I held up a stubborn looking plant with tiny purple flowers."No idea." He shrugged, dirt smudged across his forearm. "Just pull anything that looks wrong.""That's not a real gardening strategy.""It's my gardening strategy." He tossed a weed into the pile between us. "Works fine so far."We worked in easy quiet for a while, sun warm on the back of my neck. The whole thing si weirdly relaxing despite neither of us knowing what we were doing. Somewhere around the third flower bed, the quiet stopped feeling just quiet and started feeling like the kind of space where something honest could actually happen."You know this can't go anywhere." I said it plainly, not looking up from the dirt. "Right? Even if we figure out whatever this is. We're stepsiblings, Declan. Sa
Harper's POVBlair texted me at noon. ~come to my dorm tonight. my cousin's in town and she's a whole vibe. bring snacks pretty please. forget the diet for today I’ll run with you I promise. I almost said no. My brain still felt fried from everything with Declan, the apology, the cupcake, the kiss that happened after. But sitting alone in my room replaying it on loop wasn't doing me any favors either so I grabbed a bag of chips from the pantry and drove over.Blair's dorm room smelled like vanilla candles and nail polish remover. Fairy lights strung along the ceiling, a speaker playing something with a heavy bass line and in the middle of it all sat a girl who looked like she owned the entire room without even trying. She has blonde hair cut into a cute bob that fits her so much. Hell I don’t think bob has ever fitted anybody like it does her. Her brown eyes are soulful. "So this is the famous Harper." She stood up fast, arms already open. "Blair talks about you nonstop. I'm Zuri."
Harper’s POVNeither of us moved though so I’m an enabler. His thumb stayed there, warm against my skin and something in the air between us went thick and slow all at once. I set the cupcake down on my nightstand without looking away from him.He leaned in first. Giving me every chance to stop it. I didn't stop it.His mouth found mine, soft at first tasting faintly like cream cheese frosting from where his thumb had been. My hand curled into the front of his shirt and he shifted closer one hand sliding to my waist over the thin cotton of my shirt. His fingers dug into my side pulling me flush against him until I could feel every hard line of his body.He pulled back just far enough to look at me, eyes dropping slow over the curve of my hip, down along my thigh where the shorts had ridden up then back to my face like he needed a second to remember how to breathe right. His chest rose and fell in ragged bursts, matching my own."You're not even trying tonight and you still look like th
