BRIAN

The Gilt was the opposite of Venom.

Low amber light, velvet booths, a hush that cost money. It sat under a jeweler's shop with no sign on the door, and you needed a card to get past the second stairwell.

"King!" Felix hugged me before I cleared the entrance. Whiskey on his breath, relief on his face.

"We thought you'd be grounded forever."

"I escaped." I shrugged. "What else is new?"

Rico leaned in, grinning, already reaching into his jacket. "New batch tonight. Supposed to be the best yet."

"I'm in."

I didn't ask what it was. I knew already, and it didn't scare me the way it used to.

Jax draped an arm over my shoulder, heavy and familiar. "Saturday, the bridge route. Rico's got the cars. No rules."

"Perfect."

The word felt good in my mouth, like something I could still control on a night that had started to feel like it was controlling me.

I didn't look back to see whether Ace had followed. I could feel him, the way you feel the weather before it breaks.

He had been stopped at the members' desk by a very polite man with a clipboard, and I had slipped through the service corridor while the man was busy. It was the smallest victory I'd had in weeks, and I took it.

---

My private room was on the third floor, behind a door that opened only with the house card Rico's uncle had given me. Nobody else had one. I had made sure of that.

The powder hit fast. One white line, one quick breath, and the wave rolled through me.

Everything went numb, warm and weightless. My shoulders dropped. My mind went quiet for the first time all day, with no father in it, and no Ace who should be searching the building for me.

"Told you," Rico said. "Best stuff."

"Yeah." My voice came out slow and syrupy. "It's good."

Felix's face pinched with the worry he always wore right before he pretended he hadn't noticed.

"You gotta stop, King. This is dangerous."

"I don't care." I laughed, and it sounded hollow. "I don't care about anything."

Jax came back with a woman on his arm. Sharp-eyed. Beautiful in the specific way girls at places like this were, the kind who smelled a fortune before they smelled a person.

"King, this is Sasha. She's interested."

Sasha smiled slowly, like she already knew how this would end.

"I've heard about you. The Alpha who charms like an Omega. Everyone says you're really an Omega hiding as an Alpha."

I stood and made my voice go flat. "What do you want, Sasha?"

Her hand landed on my chest, fingers spread, testing. "I want to know if the rumors are true. I've got a thing for Omegas."

I caught her wrist before she could go any further and set it back at her side, gentle but absolute.

"They're not. I'm not interested."

She shrugged, unbothered, and drifted out into the hall as if she'd expected exactly that.

Girls like her always had a backup plan lined up.

Felix watched her go, then looked at me sideways. "You good?"

"Never better." A lie so smooth I almost believed it myself.

---

By the time I stumbled down to the ground floor, the high had turned sour.

Cold sweat pooled on the back of my neck. My legs had stopped cooperating, and the marble floor kept tilting at angles it had no business tilting at.

Somewhere above me, the hush of the Gilt went on, oblivious, as if nobody had noticed I was coming apart at the seams.

Ace was standing at the foot of the service stairs.

Of course he was.

I stopped so hard I nearly fell.

That door had a card lock. The stairwell also wasn't on any floor plan.

And I was sure it wasn't the security that let him in or less he had a way to make them.

"You're not driving," he said.

"Watch me." The words slurred worse than I meant them to.

He took my keys without asking twice. He plucked them straight out of my useless hand.

"Get in the car."

"No. I don't want..."

He picked me up. Just like that, like I weighed nothing, like I was something small and breakable he needed to get somewhere safe, fast.

"I'm done arguing."

He set me in the passenger seat and buckled me in himself, hands quick and sure across the strap. I was too weak to fight it, and some small, pathetic part of me didn't want to.

---

The city blurred at the edges the whole way home.

Streetlights smeared past the window like wet paint.

I was talking. I knew I was talking, and I couldn't stop the words from spilling out or find the wall I usually kept between what I felt and what I said.

It was so hot in the car. So uncomfortable. I kept slipping in and out.

"Don't leave me," I whispered. "Please don't leave me."

"I'm not leaving." His voice, low, steady, somewhere above me, somewhere I could hold onto.

"Everyone leaves."

My eyes were burning now, hot and wet.

"Everyone. My mother. My father. Everyone leaves eventually. It's just a matter of time."

"I'm not going anywhere."

"Promise?"

It came out so small. Nothing like me at all. Nothing like the person I spent every daylight hour pretending to be.

"I promise."

I don't remember anything much after that.

Broken pieces instead. Then blank. Completely.

---

I woke to a pounding skull and a shirt that wasn't mine.

My own bed, thank God, but I was wrapped in something soft and gray that smelled like woodsmoke and pine. My whole body knew whose it was before my brain caught up.

Ace stood in the doorway with a coffee in his hand, watching me like he'd been standing there a while. Like he'd been standing there all night.

"You passed out. I brought you home. Changed your clothes."

"You didn't have to." Bitter, even to my own ears.

He stepped closer. "You were crying. You begged me not to leave."

Heat crawled up my neck, fast and unwelcome. "I don't remember that."

"You don't have to remember." His eyes didn't waver. "I do. And I meant what I said."

I stared at him, coffee steam curling between us. For the first time in longer than I could name, I didn't have a single smart thing to say.

I nodded and pulled the shirt tighter around myself without meaning to, and let the silence sit between us longer than either of us needed it to.

  • DAMN YOU, ALPHA    SAY IT OUT LOUD

BRIANWeston picked the place: a courtyard behind a closed gallery, six chairs and a dead fountain, a lantern over the door. He asked me to come alone. I told him that wasn't possible.Ace stayed by the archway, thirty feet away, hands folded in front of him. He had agreed to it in one word and hadn't looked at me since.I told myself thirty feet was fine. It was better than the alternative: Ace talking me out of seeing Weston at all, because he was jealous of every hour I'd once spent with him. I'd had to practically coax him into accepting it, promising this was where everything ended. Besides, Weston had only said "let's meet." He never called it a date, and I wasn't going to treat it as one, or my jealous boyfriend would flare up again.Weston was already sitting on the fountain's edge with his jacket off. A glass of something amber sat beside him, untouched, and he'd loosened his tie like a man who'd been staring at the same wall for hours."You came," he said."You asked." I sat

  • DAMN YOU, ALPHA    NOT HOW A BODYGUARD BEHAVES

BRIANAce took the package from the concierge before I'd even seen the elevator light.Flat gray paper, a card tucked under the ribbon. Weston's handwriting. Ace turned it over once, read the name, and set it face down on the hall table."Send it back.""You haven't even looked at it.""He waited at that hotel until midnight." His voice was flat and very controlled. "He doesn't get paid off with one more gift. He doesn't stand a chance with you."It had been three days since the Marlowe. Ace had stopped hiding what he felt without ever announcing it. He stood closer. He kissed me often. We had sex constantly. We cuddled. And whenever *Cole* lit up my phone, Ace went quiet, glaring at the screen like he wanted to put a fist through the name. He was still my bodyguard, but he stood like a man guarding something that belonged to him. I should have been thrilled. Mostly I was afraid. We did everything a couple did, even bathing together. But I still wasn't sure what we were together. Lov

  • DAMN YOU, ALPHA    NOBODY TOUCHES YOU BUT ME

BRIANSaturday, I dressed for it slowly. Fitted tuxedo, the white one I hadn't worn. The silk tie was loosened just enough. I stood in front of the mirror and looked at a man I didn't recognize, someone about to make a terrible decision on purpose.Ace was waiting by the door with my coat over his arm."The car is downstairs," he said."Is that all?""Yes.""You're really going to drive me there?""It's my job."I laughed, short and hollow, and tried so hard not to break in front of him, though my heart already had. At last, I picked up my overnight bag, my hands shaking no matter how hard I tried to make it stop. I knew he saw all of it. Without looking at him, without begging again, I started for the door. If he doesn't want me, I'll show him how well another man does.My hand was on the doorknob when his voice stopped me.“Don't go.”It was so quiet I almost missed it. I turned, too fast like I was scared he would change his mind the moment I delayed. He was still standing there

  • DAMN YOU, ALPHA    DO YOU ACTUALLY WANT ME

BRIANThe photo ran on page one of the Sunday society section. *KINGSFORD AND COLE: THE MATCH NOBODY SAW COMING.* Weston's hand at the small of my back, close to my hip, his mouth on mine, my eyes closed, my smile so convincing I almost believed it.My father sent a single text. *Well done.*It was the first thing he'd said to me in years that wasn't a threat.---The real dates started. Two weeks of it. Dinners, a charity gala, a polo match where I hid behind sunglasses and let Weston explain the rules. He held doors and I let him. He remembered I hated cilantro. He made me laugh twice, and both times I checked whether Ace had seen us. I tried to gauge his reactions to everything. Ace saw everything. He drove us in silence, eyes on the road, hands steady. He sat in the front seat of a car where two men leaned toward each other in the back and never once looked in the mirror. On the fifteenth night, he missed a turn while driving. It was so small that Weston didn't notice. We were he

  • DAMN YOU, ALPHA    LET'S TRY DATING

BRIANIt had been nine days since the patch incident. And since I bought myself a new phone and locked away the one my father had power over.I didn't trash it. My father would notice. I decided to play the game of choosing when he could track me instead.Ace hadn't touched me once. He spent most of his time in the study or out of the house. He drove me where I needed to go, and stood three feet behind me like a man on a leash he had chosen himself. The man who had parked outside Felix's building all night now looked at me the way he looked at doorways. He had asked to leave. I hadn't forgotten it. And he said he shouldn't have given me hope. How wrong he was. He had no idea I didn't regret any of it. My only regret was letting a game become something that hurt me. Ace had plainly decided not to want anything to do with me anymore. And he stuck to it like the disciplined ex-special forces soldier he was.---Jax's birthday was on the roof of a members' lounge called Halcyon. Halcyon

  • DAMN YOU, ALPHA    BECAUSE OF HER

BRIANThe elevator in Felix's building smelled like old carpet and someone else's takeout. I leaned against the back wall, one hand on the rail, the hangover pulling at me with every slow floor.Ace was leaning against the SUV when I came out. He had on the same shirt as yesterday, stubble shadowing his jaw.Two empty coffee cups were on the dashboard behind him. He didn't move toward me. He looked me over once, head to foot, the way you check something you were afraid to find broken."You're upright," he said."Disappointed?""No."I frowned and stopped a full arm's length away. Something was wrong with the picture, and it took my aching head a second to find it."Did you spend the night here? How did you even know where I was?"He held my stare and said nothing, his eyes giving away more than his silence did."Felix's place isn't in any file you have. He moved here in June. I never gave you this address.""Your phone.""My phone's been silent since I turned it face down, right afte
