Darla's POV

Ten minutes later, my secretary announced over the intercom.

"Ma'am, Mr. Xavier is here to see you."

My chest constricted. For an instant, I considered ordering her to make him leave, that I wasn't prepared for anyone to see me in such a state, but then I let out a breath. "Let him up."

A couple of minutes later, Xavier showed up in my office with his usual air of confidence. Seeing him almost undid me. Without saying anything, he strode right over to me and wrapped me in his arms. His grip was warm, firm, earthy.

I pressed into it for a moment, then stepped back, shouldering myself away and attempting to catch his eyes. He stared at me with determination, worry furrowing his brow.

"Tell me, Darla," he told me. "What's happening?"

The burden I'd been lugging came crashing down again. I swallowed hard, and then I told it all, the board, the so-called new policy, the forged signature, their demand that I resign.

The words spewed out of me in anger and shock. My hands were tr

Darla's POV“You should go home and rest,” Xavier said, voice low but certain.I shook my head immediately. “The last place I want to be right now is home. If I sit there, I’ll only replay everything they said, everything they planned, until I lose my mind.”His brows creased, but his eyes relaxed. "Then don't go home." He pushed himself up from leaning against the wall, doing so slowly, methodically. "Go with me."The sentence took me aback. I blinked once, twice, checking if I'd done it correctly. "Go with you?""Yes," he said calmly, as if the most ordinary thing in the universe. "If home is going to keep you on edge, then let me provide you with a place to be tonight. A place where you don't have to think about them."For a moment, I was caught between instinct and relief.Part of me wanted to keep my guard up, to maintain a distance from him. But the other part, the exhausted, angry part of me, ached for his steadiness.Xavier reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone. “I’

Darla's POVI sat up, patience snapping like a dry twig. "You know what," I told him, voice cold, detached, and bitter, "I'm not going to sit here and waste another minute of time arguing with you. I know what to do."I shoved my chair back and stood, heels ringing out on the glossy floor. The boardroom fell silent, eyes tracking, their smugness grappling with terror. "Wait." The chairman's voice cut through the silence. Another added theirs, less vocal this time, almost cajoling. "We're not going to fire you outright, Darla," one tried to reason. "That way you won't lose all your benefits." I turned slowly, an eyebrow lifting. "Oh?""Yes," another forward-leaned, pushing a folder across the desk. The edges of the folder scraped as it came to rest in front of me. "You resign. Best that way. Quiet. No drama. We accept. You leave graciously."I just sat there a moment, staring at them, at the sheer condescension dripping from their mouths. And then the laugh rose in my chest, low a

Darla's POVI stared at them, my lips parting in disbelief. “I don’t understand what you’re trying to say.”The board members exchanged looks, silent messages passing between their eyes as though I was a child asking the meaning of two plus two. Their expressions dripped with condescension, and one finally leaned back in his chair, folding his arms.“We’re not trying to say anything, Ms. Darla,” he said with a sharp smile. “We are telling you, plainly. We want you off as CEO.”I blinked, letting out a short, dry laugh. “You can’t be serious. That’s impossible.”“On the contrary,” another member cut in smoothly, his voice calm but merciless. “It is very possible. In fact, it’s already in motion. The board has the right, according to the new policy, to remove a CEO from his or her position if the majority votes in favor.”My pulse quickened. “New policy?” I repeated, my tone sharper now, disbelief clawing at me. “What new policy? You expect me to believe you rewrote board procedures

Darla's POVI leaned back in my chair, watching Victor with a small smile. "Did Sam say something bad about me?" I asked, lightening the tone a bit, feeling out the waters.".Victor threw his head back and laughed with ease. "Bad? Not at all. Quite the contrary, in fact. Sam had very good things to say about you. He said that you're intelligent, serious, and. how did he put it? Ah, yes, a person who can hold their own."I raised an eyebrow to Sam, who smiled and seemed pleased with himself. "That is very generous of you," I told him.Sam shrugged. "Just telling the truth, Darla."Victor reached over to the lean leather briefcase that he had been carrying and pulled out a thick file.He set it on my desk with deliberate slowness. "This," he said, "is a real estate proposal which I have been doing some research on. It's worth millions, and I believe it would be a very profitable venture for you.".I pulled the file toward me and began to flip through it. My eyes scanned the figures, th

Darla's POVHe was the last person I wanted to hear from right now, but his name on the screen lit something warm inside me.I just sat for a moment, looking at the screen, the phone in my hand.Happiness teased me before I could grasp it. I hated that he could do this to me, just the call, just his name on my phone, and my whole attitude was altered.I exhaled, attempting to gain control of myself, but my fingers spasmed to swipe and answer."Hello," I said, answering and making my tone flat, even as I felt that strange thrill in my chest again."Darla," his voice flat, crisp, a voice heavy with conviction. "How are you?""I'm fine," I said softly, too quickly. My lip twisted fractionally and I was thankful he could not see the look drawing on my face."That's good to know," he replied, and there was quiet, the kind that felt purposeful.I softly cleared my throat and concluded with, "Thank you for letting me use listening ears yesterday."He chuckled, low and deep, and my heart miss
