MONIQUE

I stared at her, my eyes wide.

“What? What are you doing here?" I asked hoarsely, "You’ve got to help me,” and I blurted out the next second.

“Ryan has gone crazy. He’s kept me in here, and I really....I really need to go to the hospital. I don’t know where my aunt went, and he’s threatening me. Please, you’ve got to help me. You’ve always been like a mother to me. You have to help me,” I pleaded with her.

It was Mrs. Bennett.

She smiled.

“Of course, dear, I know. And that’s why I’m here. I’m going to help you. But in order to help you, I need you to help me too, Monique,” she said softly.

She placed the food tray on the bedside table and came to sit beside me on the bed. I looked at her, my eyes stinging.

I knew she had always been on Ryan’s side, but I was hoping, desperately, somewhere in her heart was still a motherly instinct, a part of her that would see Ryan for what he was doing and try to help me. Maybe I could turn her against her son. Or maybe… I didn’t know. I w

MONIQUEMr. Smith slid the envelope toward me slowly. No one spoke.I couldn’t even bring myself to touch it.My name. Written in my father’s handwriting. Right there on the front. And I just couldn’t take it anymore.I cried.“I’m so sorry, my child…” Mr. Smith said as he stood up from his seat, reaching out as if to comfort me.But Ryan immediately raised his hand.“She is my wife. I will take care of her,” he said, trying to pull me toward him, to hold me, to pretend-comfort me, like he had any right. But the last thing I wanted was Ryan’s false comfort. He was one of the reasons I was crying so hard. And I didn’t even think, didn’t hesitate as I quickly stood, snatched the letter from the table, and ran out of the room.I heard Ryan’s voice calling after me.“Monique!”I heard the footsteps behind me. I heard shouting—Ryan’s voice, Mr. Smith’s voice, all mixing together. But I didn’t know what they were saying. I didn’t even know where I was going.I was just running.I reached th

MONIQUERyan’s fingers tightened on my thigh.“No, it’s okay. You can just… say whatever it is in front of Ryan,” I finally muttered.I was facing Mr. Smith, but I still couldn’t look him in the eye. My gaze stayed locked on the polished table surface, my fingers curling tightly together in my lap. My voice felt thin, strangled. But it came out. And that was enough for Ryan.Mr. Smith took a deep breath, long, controlled, and measured.“Okay,” he said quietly. “If that’s what the two of you have agreed.”He paused a moment, then continued, “I just need to ask something from my secretary. I told her to prepare the documents.... I’ll go check that everything is in order.”He stood up and walked toward the door. The second the door shut, Ryan was on me.“What are you trying to do?” he hissed, leaning in close. “Trying to show him there’s something going on here? Huh? Is that it?”“No,” I answered quickly, my voice small. He scoffed, shaking his head. “I hate that man. He’s been a thorn i

MONIQUEThis was news to me. I had absolutely no idea what Mr. Smith was talking about.I turned toward Ryan slowly, my eyes wide.“You… you were going to get charged?”Ryan didn’t look at me. He kept his eyes fixed on Mr. Smith instead. His jaw was clenched so tightly I could see the muscles pulsing beneath his skin.“That’s ancient history,” Ryan said. “It’s irrelevant.”“It’s very relevant,” Mr. Smith replied calmly, leaning back in his chair. “Especially when the matter at hand concerns ownership, legal autonomy, and the safety of my client.”Ryan let out a short, cold laugh.“Your client?” he repeated. “She is not any client of yours, Mr. Smith. You were her parents’ lawyer. Not hers.”He glanced at me, then back at Mr. Smith, as if I were furniture in the room.“She’s my wife. She and I are one,” Ryan continued. “And I speak on her behalf. We’re only here because she personally needs to sign, and you refused to let me bring the documents to her myself.... So just put the papers

MONIQUEMrs. Bennett finally left, but thankfully, Ryan didn’t come back into the bedroom.I was fortunate enough not to see him the next day either. The day after that, I woke up to the same silence that had started to feel like a trap. It felt like the calm before the storm. My days were just days now...empty, unplanned, and composed of fear and worry. Every hour was dictated by the Bennetts, with Ryan as their leader. I didn’t know what was coming until it happened. That morning, the door opened without warning... Ryan walked in.I don’t know why, but just the sight of him made my stomach twist and my breath catch. It was becoming an instinct now... Pure fear and hatred. automatic. He stood there, expression unreadable, his voice clipped and cold.“Take a shower and get changed. Wear something appropriate and meet me downstairs.”He looked at his watch.“We have fifteen minutes. Hurry up.”And just like that, without adding another word, he turned and left.I did exactly as he said.

MONIQUESuddenly, Knock. Knock. We both freeze. Our eyes dart toward the door.“Ryan? Monique?”It’s Mrs. Bennett, Ryan's mother.I wait for Ryan to respond, but he doesn’t. Mrs. Bennett goes on, her voice worried. “Ryan? Monique? Are you okay in there?”Ryan sighs, takes a deep breath, and then starts walking toward the door while I’m still crouched there on the floor. He opens it, and the two of them exchange a few words in low tones I can’t make out. The next minute, Mrs. Bennett steps into the room.I raise my head to look at her. She looks back at me, first at my face, then at the shattered phone on the floor, and something in her eyes shifts. She turns toward Ryan and says firmly, “Leave us.”Just like that. Ryan gives me one last warning look before walking out and closing the door behind him.For a few moments, Mrs. Bennett just stands there, silent, her gaze moving from the broken pieces on the floor to me. Finally, she sighs. “What happened here, Monique?”But I can’t fin

MONIQUEWhat is happening?"What is this?" Ryan asks, raising the phone between us.I swallow hard, forcing down the panic that’s threatening to rise. I don’t respond to Ryan's questions.Ryan places the phone on my lap as we sit next to each other. Our thighs nearly touch. Not quite, but enough to make my skin crawl. I shift slightly away from him.I pick it up, place it right back on his thigh. “It looks like a phone to me.”“Yes,” he says quietly, his lips curving into something that isn’t a smile. “You’re right. It is a phone. But the question is.....who does it belong to?”I shrug. “I don’t know. Is it yours?”He lets out a laugh, mocking, hollow, wrong.“What happened,” he begins slowly, “is that when you ran away from me to the bathroom last night… the sheets were tangled and everything was a mess. As I was getting out of bed, I leaned on the pillow and felt something strange. I pulled it away and.....”He pauses.“There it was. The phone... This phone. Just lying there, on th
