MasukCLARA'S POVI spun around and pressed my spine flat against the cool wallpaper, clamping both hands over my lips to stop a sharp scream from escaping.Jaxson stood inches away in the dim light of the corridor. He raised a single finger to his lips, signaling me to stay silent."It's just me," he whispered."You scared me to death," I said, barely hearing myself."Sorry." He tilted his head toward the hallway. "Come on, let's not stand here listening to that. My mom's on a roll tonight."He took my wrist gently, his fingers warm against my pulse point, and guided me down the carpeted hallway until we stopped right outside my bedroom door. The loud, sharp shrieks of his mother arguing with Maria downstairs faded into distant background noise."I almost gave out," I whispered, placing a shaking hand over my racing heart. "I thought I got caught."Jaxson leaned his shoulder against my doorframe. A small, crooked smile touched his lips. "I saw you peeking through the wooden railings on the
JAXSON'S POV"I'll ask again," my mother said, sharper this time. "What exactly is going on here?"I glanced at Clara, gave her a small nod telling her to go back in, and walked over to where my mother stood."It's nothing, Mom," I said, touching her shoulder."Nothing?" She pulled her arm away. "I know what I saw, Jaxson! That didn't look like nothing."I knew she wouldn't buy it. I took a deep breath, my brain working fast to find a believable excuse."I was upset about Lily," I started, trying to sound distressed. "About the yelling, the disappointment I've caused you, and all that. It all got to me."My mother narrowed her eyes. She looked me up and down. She still looked very suspicious."So you're sad that you disappointed your parents, and your response is hugging the nanny," my mother said coldly. "In the middle of a public hallway.""I was breaking down, Mom," I lied smoothly. "Clara was just being nice.""That looked like more than nice!" she yelled. "I'm not a fool, Jaxson.
JAXSON'S POVMr Whitfield stood up slowly. "We'll head home now, Clarence." Uncle Sylvester stood up also. "Keep us updated on Lily."The two of them hurried out the front door toward their cars."Go get her VIP card from my office," my father ordered, already pulling his own coat off the hook. "And be fast."I ran upstairs as fast as I could, found the card, and grabbed a few toys and essentials from Lily's room. By the time I got back down, my parents were already standing by the sprinter. I climbed in and took a seat across from them. The driver sped off immediately. The ride to the hospital was the longest twenty minutes of my life."I do not understand you sometimes, Jaxson," my dad started, staring straight ahead, not even looking at me. "You are almost nineteen, and we cannot trust you with your sister's well-being for a few weeks.""She is just a little girl, Jaxson," my mother added, shaking her head. "We trust you to keep her safe. And you let this happen under your watch."
JAXSON'S POV"My parents?" I screamed, totally shocked. "How is that possible? They weren't supposed to come back until next week.""It was a surprise," Maria said, looking around nervously. "They arrived just fifteen minutes ago, with guests even. I already told them you and Lily were out for the evening." "Fifteen minutes ago, shit." I ran a hand through my hair, my mind racing. " Okay. Okay, I still need to get the card, Maria. Lily needs it.""What happened to her?""She fell on the ice at the rink," I said. "We went ice skating.""Oh no." She flung her hand to her mouth. This is not good news at all. Your parents will not be happy with this. They're going to have a lot of questions."“Leave that to me," I nodded. She turned and headed back to the Sprinter, and I stood there for a second, tense all over. I was sweating even in the cold. This was really a surprise, and at the worst possible time. I missed them, obviously, the house had been way too quiet without them around, but r
CLARA'S POVI was moving before I even thought about it, my skates cutting hard across the ice, heading right to the edge."Lily!" I dropped to my knees beside her, my hands hovering over her leg, scared to touch it. "Lily, look at me."She was sobbing so hard she could barely get words out. "It hurts, it hurts so bad."Jaxson skidded to a stop right behind me and dropped down on her other side. "Hey, hey, I'm right here. Where does it hurt? Show me."She pointed at her right knee, already swelling under her leggings, and cried even harder.A rink worker jogged over, and a small crowd of skaters had stopped to stare. My chest felt tight, and my hands were shaking. All I could think was that I was supposed to be watching her, and instead I got carried away dancing."Let's get her to that bench and put some ice on it," the rink worker said, pointing toward a bench near the exit."I got her," Jaxson said, sliding his arms under Lily and lifting her carefully off the ice. "Easy, easy. I g
CLARA'S POVHe grinned and pushed off after me, and for the next while it turned into an actual game. I led him in loose turns around the slower skaters, and Lily cheered every time either of us spun. Jaxson kept up fast, but I could tell he was holding back a little, taking it easy on me, I guess. He wasn't Sterling Heights hockey captain for nothing."Wait for me!" Lily called out, wobbling slightly on her own.We slowed down right away and skated back to grab her hands, one in each of ours. She held on tight, giggling the whole way as we pulled her along between us."Faster!" she screamed."You sure about that?" Jaxson asked, already grinning."Faster, faster, faster!" She sang.We picked up speed, the three of us gliding in a loose circle. Lily's laugh bounced off the walls of the rink, loud enough that a couple of skaters turned to look. Jaxson caught my eye over her head, and I couldn't help but smile back at him. Then Lily let go of both our hands, slow and steady, finding her
He stared at me. I stared right back. Our eyes fixed on each other. The world did not end, though it felt like it should have. His mouth opened. "What the hell?" he screamed. "Adene? Is this a joke? Are you stalking me now?" "Jaxson." Maria appeared behind him, but her eyes moved straigh
I stared at the screen until the light burned my eyes. Removed from the W******p group. Then from the squad. What for? What was my offense? My phone rang out. Maya was calling. I picked up. "Clara? Are you seeing this?" Maya’s voice was frantic. "I just saw the notification. I tried to message
The word hit me like a physical blow to the chest.Filled? This couldn't be true. I needed this job. It wasn't just a job; it was the medicine in my mother's veins. It was the roof over our heads."Maria, wait," Mrs. Gabe pleaded. "I spoke to Helena this afternoon. She said—""And I am speaking t
I couldn’t speak.“She’s fading, Clara,” he continued. "Every hour we wait is an hour we don’t get back. If we delay much longer, she might not make it.”The doctor walked away to check on another patient."I’ll get the money, sir. I’ll try," I whispered as he went.My phone buzzed in my hand. I lo
