Prologue
I can still feel the shadows wrapped around me, the way they dug their claws into me. How cold and lost I felt in the darkness. I could still hear their whispers of temptation in my ears when it was quiet enough. A piece of me would always be missing, but it was something I would do again if I had to.
My head was almost always quiet now; Ahmes hardly had enough energy to speak nowadays, but it was a price I had to pay to make sure the one I loved was safe.
No one understood why I did it, mate, or not. The dark realms were forbidden, and only someone wholly insane or looking for death would willingly enter such an evil place.
I looked up at Balor; he was the spitting image of our mother. His sapphire blue eyes burned into me as he waited for me to speak. I knew what was coming; I knew how this would end because it always ended the same way.
He would be angry; mother had seen it. She had warned me of his outburst, but I didn't need sight to know how he would react. It was the reason why we made sure my family was safely tucked away in our room.
I gave him a tight smile, the scar on my face aching more than usual. Everything in my left eye was nothing more than a blur since I had almost completely lost vision in it a couple of years ago.
My heart raced in my chest as I forced myself to remember the nightmares I tried so hard to forget. I let out a heavy breath.
"I guess I should start from the beginning then." I mused.
Balor's expression didn't falter as he waited patiently for me to relive my past. I could see the tension in his posture. I could see the guilt in his eyes as he looked over the scars on my face. He was always one to take the blame when something bad happened, especially when he hadn't seen it coming—even being the youngest. He had taken it upon himself to be our protector.
But I wasn't that girl anymore; I wasn't someone who needed to be protected or pitied. I had seen the monsters and lived through the death of everything inside me. And what arose from the ashes and brought light into the darkness wasn't the same thing which had entered them. I had been broken and damaged more times than I cared to admit, but I wasn't going to let my past continue to haunt me. He needed to know the truth of it all. It had to happen this way to prepare him for what was to come.
I leaned back in my chair and looked up at the vaulted ceilings of the dining hall. The knots in my stomach easings as I reassured myself that I was here and this wasn't a dream. I blew out a breath, my fingers twisting in the hem of my skirt.
"It all started with dragons..."
Chapter 1- Promises *Two days earlier* "She's coming, and when she rises, your entire family will burn in her inferno," I screamed as my body hung in the air. I couldn't move; I was frozen in place. Ahmes clawed to break free, but she was being suppressed within my mind by powerful magic. "When I break free, I will kill you. That's a promise." I snarled. The witch before me let out a manic laugh. His voice was low as he spoke. "When I'm done with you, you won't even remember your own name, mutt," I screamed as I felt the heat of his magic burning against my own. Then, suddenly, I couldn't scream anymore as I was plunged into cold waters. As I gasped for air, my lungs filled with water. Everything burned, and I was thrashing against the current that had pulled me under. I was drowni
Chapter 2 - Secrets "Nesrin, are you sure you still want to do this?" My mother asked as we finished the last of the preparations for my birthday celebration. I let out a yawn as I forced myself to sit up straighter. "Of course I do. With Balor finally back to talking terms with us and finding his mate, I want everyone to have the chance to get together." It wasn't entirely the reason I had to do this. We both knew that, but I could tell something else was bothering her. My mother bit her lower lip as she looked down at the papers in front of her. I could see there was something she wasn't telling me, something she wasn't sure she could. "What aren't you telling me?" I questioned. She would typically let her visions occur without a fuss, but if she saw something so horrible that it haunted her, she couldn't help but obsess over it, espe
Chapter 3 - Cursed "Is he here yet?" I asked Imelda for the fifth time. She rolled her emerald eyes, shaking her head, a smile on her face as she did the last of the buttons on my dress. She wore a white dress with intricate lace details on the bodice. It hugged every curve perfectly. She looked absolutely stunning and looked the exact opposite of me. If she was day, I was the night. The dress I wore was as black as the night sky. My dresses were altered not to reveal too much skin anymore. I couldn't stand the look on everyone's face when they looked at me, looked at my scars. The pity and grief in their eyes were already too much to handle as they stared at the scars on my face. The laced sleeves allowed for airflow, and the dress's bodice hugged my breasts perfectly. The skirt was light and flowy as it fanned out to brush the floor.
Chapter 4 -Truth I stood at the entrance of the dining hall. It seemed like everyone had moved out into the rest of the palace or called it a night. The music had died down, and the food was slowly being removed from the tables. It was always intriguing watching the behind-scenes of events. I used to sneak away all the time as a kid to watch the solstice celebrations be prepared. The magic it took to put everything together was always astonishing. I always wondered how they did such amazing work in such a short amount of time. I felt faint, so I leaned myself against the doorway. I knew I was already at the end of my energy limit for the day, but I knew what I had to do to clear the air between Balor and me. I had to let him know what I was feeling and what had happened to me. L
Chapter 5 - Disbelief*Six Year's Ago*"Nes," Damon shouted as he ran through the medical ward. I was in the middle of healing a trainee. A broken arm he had earned in a sparring match while training a little too hard.Even though Damon had just become the new leader of the Royal Guards a few days ago, everyone had already started training harder than before. In the last three days, the number of injured trainees and even guards In need of our care had almost tripled."Nes," He shouted again, and I bit my lip as I tried to keep my focus. I could already sense Nova was about to ascend into a rant of respect for the sick and injured as soon as he found me."N-" Nova let out a sigh of irrit
Chapter 6 - VowsNesrin's POV"What have you done?" I muttered. Shock consumed me as I took in Apollo. Disbelief had worked its way through my mind."Such a disgrace," Ahmes growled, and I had a hard time disagreeing with her.I had only met Apollo a couple of times. One of those times was when we entrusted him to protect our sister."What happened to Imelda. Did you hurt her?" Damon growled. Those words seemed to snap Apollo out of the daze he was trapped in. Panic filled his violet eyes as he stared at us. His lips parted, but no words came out."Your sister is fine. He went a little crazy, but he claimed he would have never hurt her." Hector's voice was void of any emotion.
Chapter 7 - Misdirection*Present*Nesrin's POV"Wait, you're telling me you made a vow with a dragon. Healed some unhinged prisoner and then passed out in his prison cell?" Balor questioned, looking at me like I was the dumbest person alive, and maybe he wasn't wrong. I blew out a deep breath."Yes," I said coldly."And why didn't I see it?"He asked, furrowing his brow."Dragons, they're old magic just like oracles, true Dacian, and dark magic. They can hide things from seers.""Of course." He said I could see he had more questions, but I really wanted to continue before deciding against it again."Now, will you let me
Chapter 8 - DeceptionNesrin"I need to go to Caspian tomorrow." I casually threw out as everyone ate their dinner in silence. The tension in our home was anything but calm since Imelda had left. It had been three weeks since she ran away. Ran away is the broad term of what she did since our mother refused to believe that all her children would blindside her like that and help our sister escape her arranged marriage from hell. Literally.Or at least that's what she wanted us to believe, but I knew she was just hurt that she wasn't involved in her escape plan.My mother arched a brow at me but didn't say a word as she took another bite of her roasted duck. I took her silence as my queue to continue talking."Garren is a friend of
