LOGINShe was raised as a slave, beaten, starved; she never had a name—or so she thought. Nervously, trying not to make a mistake, she nervously moves through the dense crowd gathered in the hopes of meeting the future Alpha King. Little did she know how much her life would change in a single evening. But would the traumas of her past allow her to become who she was destined to be?
View MoreI mustn't break; he was just waiting for me to make a mistake so he could punish me again. How many times had I been beaten? I'd lost count. Constantly starved, deprived of food, or else it was sold to me at a price I refused to pay.
Tonight, there were guests at the estate. I'd been told that the heir, the future Alpha king, was one of them, and that he tolerated mistakes even less than the master of the estate. That if I made a mistake, he would show no mercy to this wolf less creature that I am.
I closed my eyes and tried to calm my breathing. As always when I thought the moon goddess had deprived me of my wolf, a lump formed in my throat, and I breathed harder. Why, O Goddess, do you deprive me of my only chance to escape this hell? If my wolf were present, I could run away and live as a vagabond, living off my hunting, but no, I had nothing. I was forced to take vitamins to awaken my wolf, because, not having a wolf, even as a slave, was a disgrace to a people, but nothing helped. So, I became the lord of the domain's whipping girl. Any excuse was good enough to beat me, to whip me, to starve me, whether I made a mistake or not. The punishment was only greater if I had truly sinned.
I made an effort to return to the present moment and tried to calm the trembling in my hands. I felt so weak. Ten lashes and forty-eight hours without food—that was my final punishment for dropping an apple on the ground. I tried to remember the rules: never look anyone in the eye, never speak unless addressed directly. But who would speak to me, a slave, a nobody?
I peered through the window in the doorway into the hall, hoping to spot the heir. If I stayed away from him, perhaps he wouldn't even notice me, but what was the point? No one really knew what he looked like, so it was difficult to locate him. I decided to stay as far away from the lord of the manor as possible, since surely the guest of honor would be with him, wouldn't he?
Darcy: Have you heard the news?
It was one of the servants who had just spoken, Darcy, I think. I knew she wasn't talking to me; no one really talked to me. To them, I was nothing. She was probably talking to Tory, her best friend.
Tory: No, what?
Darcy: It seems the heir is here because he's looking for his mate!
Tory: Really?
I could hear the excitement in their voices. Becoming the heir's mate would be the greatest honor for any she-wolf.
Tory: What I wish I were the one he’s looking for,
Tory imagined.
Tory: Instead of working to serve people, I would be the ones fulfilling my every desire. A dream comes true.
I suppressed a smile; it wasn’t the time to draw attention to myself. But I found it ridiculous that this girl’s dream was to be waited on while all I dreamed of was freedom.
I pushed to open the swinging door and quietly entered the noisy, overcrowded room. My task was to collect the used dishes and wash them in the kitchen, all without making a sound, without breaking anything, without disturbing anyone—in short, to act quickly and discreetly. But alas, I felt so weak, so dizzy, that it was simply impossible for me to be fast. I felt puny, and it took a lot of energy just to walk straight.
I stopped in my tracks and took a deep breath, trying to compose myself. Then I felt a tingling at the nape of my neck. I had the feeling someone was watching me. Probably the master, searching for a new torture to inflict upon me. I clenched my fists and started moving forward again. I mustn't stop, mustn't give him a reason; that had become my mantra. A scent captivated my senses, like a coniferous forest on a spring morning. The scent was drawing closer to me, or me to it, I can't remember. I was in a trance. All I know is that I collided head-on with a perfectly sculpted man. I felt like I bounced off him and would surely have fallen if he hadn't caught me. I could hear him breathing deeply, as if he were trying to smell my wolf. I wanted to tell him not to waste any time; I didn't have any, but I had been forbidden to speak.
The man kept his large hands in my arms, caressing them up and down. He said nothing, and I didn't dare look at him.
Alpha Thompson: My lord knight, please excuse my slave. Rest assured, she will be duly punished for this affront.
I stiffened in the man's arms. I had just recognized the nasal voice of my lord and master, my tormentor, Thomson.
Man: Slave?
Oh, wretched Goddess of the Moon, what a magnificent voice—deep, resonant, sensual. It sent shivers down my spine. He tightened his embrace as if to infuse me with his warmth.
Alpha Thompson: Yes, my lord.
Man: Then sell her to me!
What? Oh, good heavens. My breathing quickened, and the man's scent rose to my head. I felt myself weakening; he must have sensed it too, for he placed one of his large hands in the small of my back and with his other, he traced imaginary circles on my back.
Alpha Thompson: But sir, she's a nobody, a good-for-nothing. I'm keeping her out of sheer pity.
I felt the man stiffen against me. Would he do as everyone else did and turn away? I wouldn't have held it against him; nobody wanted me…
Man: Then you wouldn't mind letting her go with me, since it will allow you to get rid of her!
The man's scent enveloped me completely now, a musky, fresh fragrance that intoxicated me, accompanied by subtle caresses on my back. Not once did he loosen the grip of his arms around me, keeping me captive.
I looked at Josh and smiled gently.Josh: I swear, Evy, it was hilarious. Claude was completely frozen in front of the girl. I've never seen him so speechless, especially around a girl.Evangeline: Josh, Claude has probably met his soulmate. You know as well as I do that everyone reacts differently. I'm happy for him; everyone deserves to be happy. How's the girl?He sighed softly.Josh: That's what's funny, Evy. The girl panicked and ran away.I felt sorry for Claude and looked at Josh with incomprehension. It wasn't funny; I didn't understand why he found the situation comical.Josh: Evy, I misspoke. The girl ran away, telling him she wouldn't be a third wheel... she saw him following you and thinks you're Claude's main interest.I sighed softly.Evangeline: What did Claude do?Josh: He went after her to try and make things right...Evangeline: It's insulting to think I would cheat on Alexander with one of my brothers in spirit, or even be unfaithful to my mate with anyone.Josh: Sh
Then, I completely exploded, sobbing with pleasure against Xander. He kissed my face tenderly, caressing my cheeks until I calmed down.Alexander: There, my Luna, that's good…His voice was husky, deep, a blend of his own voice and that of his wolf.Evangeline: Xander… it's… it's…My voice was hoarse, my breath short, I was searching for words, as if he had melted my brain. He chuckled softly as he kissed me passionately.Alexander: I know, my love…I heard a distinctly masculine pride in his tone, and I wanted to smile with pleasure, but I wasn't even sure I had the strength. He began to move slowly inside me again, making slow, precise circular motions with his pelvis.Evangeline: Xander… Xander…All I could do was moan his name relentlessly, clinging to him like a lifeline. I felt like my body would burst and fly away at any moment, like I was watching fireworks through my closed eyelids. My body was covered in sweat, and I could feel it trembling with the release that was engulfin
The party began, and everyone helped themselves to a plate of the various dishes that had been prepared. Then, a bonfire was lit, and the children shouted with joy at the thought of the treats to come. I looked at my father, smiling knowingly; I, too, was eager to eat toasted marshmallows. I couldn't wait to see if they were still as good as I remembered. Even though I'd been with Xander for a year, we'd never really had the chance to have a bonfire.Alexander sat on a tree trunk placed near the fire and pulled me onto his lap, holding me close. My children were in Georges and Louis's arms, and I knew the two men were watching over them. I felt at peace, I felt happy, but above all, I felt so loved.Alexander: My beautiful Luna, I love you so much… I'm incredibly lucky to have you in my life… and you're a wonderful mother.Evangeline: You know, I've been thinking about what you suggested regarding the tracking chip… I agree, it would reassure me to be able to find my babies easily if
Evangeline's POVI looked around at all the flowers and banners decorating the grounds. There was a band playing upbeat music, making the pack members want to dance. Several barbecues had been set up and were cooking what would be our meal. The pack children were playing in the various inflatable games that had been set up to keep them entertained, and I laughed watching them. Alexander approached me, looking at me warmly.Alexander: Happy birthday, Luna.Evangeline: Thank you… that's amazing…Alexander: This is the first time we've been able to really celebrate your birthday… and the pack loves you so much that they wanted to celebrate with us.Josh arrived with a small package, which he handed to me with a smile.Josh: Happy birthday, Evy.With a trembling hand, I took the package and gently unwrapped it. I slowly lifted the lid and looked inside the box, blushing softly with pleasure. Inside was a glass snow globe with a ballerina on it. I lifted the globe in my hand to examine it
Drake: So, my princess?I smiled at my father, and Alexander showed him the picture of our baby.Evangeline: Two weeks, just as I thought.Drake: So, it's confirmed? I'm going to be a grandfather! He hugged me lovingly.Drake: I'm so happy for both of you… and for myself too…I giggled in his hug,
There was a soft knock at the door of the dining room, and staff entered with trays of food. My stomach rumbled with approval, and Alexander gently kissed me on the temple. He helped me to my feet and led me to the tables laden with various dishes. He explained what each item was and whether it was
Alexander: I know, Father. My Luna will not be left alone for any reason for as long as I deem necessary, and only she can give her father or her Gamma leave. So, even if someone approaches saying they're needed for whatever reason, they will remain by her side until I can. I know you'll tell me th
He looked at her tenderly.Charles: What do you remember?Suzanne: Tiffany… she asked for an audience… she’s back in the kingdom… she presented me with a gift… it’s a magnificent pendant… I took it in my hand… then… the rest… it’s like a nightmare… I lost all control… until you ordered me to remove
