Chapter 1

Author: Goldie Bloom
When I opened my eyes again, I found myself at a welcome-home party for my wife's childhood sweetheart, David Middleton.

With everyone catching up, they soon started joking about whose life had turned out the worst.

Someone snickered and said, "Who else could it be? Obviously Kyle! Three years ago, he was so sure he'd get into a PhD program at Westbridge University.

"Look how that turned out. He spent another two years studying at home and still couldn't get in. Now he's stuck at the Behavioral Reform Center, an institution that supposedly taught men emotional control and proper conduct.

"And look at David! He got his PhD from Westbridge, and now companies are practically lining up to hire him, offering him millions of dollars a year. Some people really have all the luck!"

The room erupted in laughter as they mocked me.

Yet, these were the same people who had once stood up for me, saying that if David hadn't pulled tricks back then, I would have been the one studying abroad.

My wife, Sharon Griffin, remained perfectly composed, but her eyes kept drifting toward the door.

She tapped her fingers against the table before asking her assistant, Adam Norris, "Kyle is on winter break too, right? Hasn't he been making a fuss about coming home?"

Adam lied through his teeth, "The school said Mr. Walsh doesn't want to come back. He chose to stay there and has been cursing you and Mr. Middleton."

A deep crease formed between Sharon's brows. "He's been there for a whole semester and still hasn't learned his lesson.

"Tell him that if he calls to apologize and promises he'll never ask to study abroad again, I'll let bygones be bygones and let him come home for New Year."

I gave a bitter laugh. She still didn't know that I was already dead.

Before I applied to the PhD programs for the third time, I discovered that Sharon had sabotaged my previous two applications, which led to a falling-out between us.

I guarded against her every move, but I never expected her to tamper with my visa paperwork and get me permanently barred from getting a visa. That meant I'd never have a chance to go abroad and find my biological parents.

I was devastated and asked for a divorce. She responded by having me sent to the Behavioral Reform Center, where I met a horrible end.

Only after I died did I learn why she had gone to such lengths to keep me from leaving the country. She was afraid I'd reveal that David had stolen my grades and taken my place abroad three years ago.

Meanwhile, David lowered his head, revealing the scar near his temple.

Holding Sharon's hands tightly, he said earnestly, "Kyle must be furious that you sent him to that center. Don't be scared, Sharon. I'll protect you. I don't care if he hits me again."

Back then, David and I applied to the same college under the same advisor. In the end, the advisor chose him.

When I simply asked him what happened, he burst into tears and rammed his head into a pillar to "prove his innocence". Everyone assumed I attacked him out of jealousy and looked down on me for it.

Sharon's eyes softened as she looked at David. She sneered. "Let him try! I'll make sure he rots at that center!"

Everyone quickly tried to comfort David.

"David, Sharon only proposed to Kyle because she was afraid he'd hurt you. Don't worry. Her heart belongs to you, and she'll always protect you."

Her eyes were filled with hatred."David," she said through gritted teeth. With Sharon's help, the police soon tracked David down.He clearly hadn't expected everything to fall apart so quickly, his face twisting with bitter resentment. My parents tried to defend him. "That's impossible. Our son would never do something like this. Officer, please look into this again."Sharon's face was pale as she said, "I'm sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Walsh. I lied to you. David isn't

Sharon stood frozen. When she finally processed what she'd heard, she grabbed the nurse and demanded, "What was the name of the man who donated the kidney?"The nurse thought for a moment and replied, "I think his last name was Walsh. Why?"Sharon's face went deathly pale. She fumbled for her phone and called the organ donation center."The person who donated a kidney to me… Was it Kyle Walsh?" she asked. The man on the other end fell silent for a moment before answering carefully, "I'm sorry, but we're not allowed to disclose that information."After Sharon pressed him several times, the man on the phone finally gave in. "Yes. Mr. Walsh asked us to keep it from you. He was afraid you wouldn't accept the kidney if you knew. We later heard the surgery went well and that you two got married. We hope you're happy together."Paula heard everything. Her face filled with shock. "So Kyle was the one who donated the kidney to you. But then how did David—"Before she could finish, Shar

Sharon's chest heaved with anger, her eyes bloodshot. "I sent him to learn how to be a proper man, and somehow he came out even worse!"A flicker of smugness crossed David's eyes.He got out of bed, picked up the folder, and said gently, "It can't be. Kyle loves you so much. He couldn't have done that. He's probably just trying to make you jealous. Sharon, let me go with you and find him."Seeing how understanding he was, Sharon was deeply moved. But after a long silence, she shook her head. "Forget it. Why should I bother looking for someone so heartless?"Just then, Sharon's phone rang."Hello, is this Mrs. Walsh? I'm calling from Oak Hill Funeral Home. I'm sorry to inform you that your husband Kyle Walsh's cremation has been completed, and his ashes are ready for collection."Sharon clenched her fists until her knuckles cracked. "I'll be right there," she said with a cold, fake smile. My heart sank. She was already furious, so that call would just sound like another one of m

David started talking about his time studying abroad."Sharon, remember when I first went overseas? You messaged me almost 100 times a day. My classmates all thought I had some crazy jealous girlfriend checking up on me."He smiled gently. "It wasn't until I convinced you to focus on work that you cut it down to ten."Sharon's hand trembled slightly. "Was it really that much?" she murmured."It was," David said softly. "Honestly, if it wasn't for your encouragement back then, I don't think I would've made it through."Something suddenly occurred to Sharon, and she looked up. "I didn't message Kyle once all semester. Is that why he's so mad?"Before David could say anything, she grabbed her coat and headed for the door.Paula called after her, asking where she was going.Sharon forced a smile and replied, "I'm going back to the reform center to look for Kyle. I think he's really angry this time. He doesn't reply to my messages at all."Adam stepped in, trying hard to stop her.

Sharon suddenly curled her lips into a wry smile. "You gave him way too much allowance every month. He went and got all this fake blood just to scare me and hide from me, and you didn't even do anything about it."She sighed softly and walked out of the dorm.Outside the building, the instructor said, "I told you, Kyle is dead."Sharon looked at him as if he were still putting on an act."I have to admit, you're a pretty good actor. Tell Kyle he almost fooled me and ask him to come out. He can stop hiding," she said. The instructor stared at her in disbelief. "He's really dead. He died on his first day here. Your family already sent someone to collect his body!"He sounded completely sincere, but Sharon still didn't believe him.Her patience finally ran out, and she lashed out. "Fine. Keep covering for him. Once I find him, I'll pull him out of this school. Your center won't get another cent from me!"After speaking, she stormed off.Adam let out a long sigh of relief and quic

Sharon shuddered violently. Her face turned so pale she looked ready to faint. She couldn't believe what she'd just heard. "What did you say?"I was just as confused as she was. After dying a painful death from my illness, my soul had left my body. The next thing I knew, I was at David's welcome-home party.I had no idea what had happened over the past few months or who had come to collect my body.Adam's eyes darted around. He immediately pointed at the instructor and snapped, "Stop talking nonsense. This is a legitimate school. How could anyone have died here? Are you even an employee?"Adam's words made something click for Sharon. She let out a cold laugh. "So there really are people inside the center taking bribes. No wonder negative news about you has been spreading like wildfire."She looked at the instructor arrogantly. "How much did Kyle pay you to lie to me? Faking his own death? I can't believe he'd come up with something like that."The instructor looked completely ba
