CHAPTER THREE - I DON'T NEED YOUR HELP
Amelia's POV Our house had been robbed and all valuable assets stolen. The neighbours weren't home, or they'd have helped. A robbery had never taken place in the apartment building for five years, they had all said. But at the moment, all I could think about was Nana. The fact that she wasn't breathing made my heart clench and unclench. She had to be fine. There was no two ways about it. Nana was a strong woman even at 85. And most importantly, I wanted my baby to meet with her. So as I paced around the waiting room with Mum and Claudia my sister, I prayed silently. I'd give anything for my Nana to be safe and well. “Are you the family of er… Mrs. Kishi?” A short woman, clad in a white coat walked toward us. Mum nodded in response. “How is she faring? Is she going to be fine?” I asked the dwarf doctor. “She is breathing normally for now. Apart from her legs which have been damaged due to the impact of the fall, she is perfectly fine.” Mum and Claudia held hands while I probed the doctor for more information about Nana. “What does this mean for us?” “It means she won't be able to walk again. A wheelchair will be used for movement and she'll need supervision. Like a nanny… Or I'd advise a nursing home.” Mum and I exchanged glances. I knew we were thinking the same thing. I wanted to speak up but Mum beat me to it. “What do you mean by that, Doctor? Do you mean we can't take good care of her?” The Doctor shifted uncomfortably in her flats. “What I meant to say is that the hospital will not discharge her until we are sure she'll have a twenty-four, seven monitoring. If your family cannot provide that little for her, she's better off in our nursing home.” The Doctor walked away from us before Mum could give her a piece of her mind. “How dare she? Did you hear her, Amelia? She's saying we are incapable of taking care of Nana.” Mum said to me, with furrowed eyebrows. Claudia and I glanced at each other and we held Mum, leading her to have a seat. Once mum and Claudia were seated, I ran a hand through my hair and exhaled. Things were falling apart. Nana was bedridden. I didn't think Mum had the money for the bills. Our house wasn't safe. Heck, I couldn't let my family return to that dipshit. My head was spinning. “I have some money,” Mum began, drawing my attention to her. “I think we can settle Nana's bills with it. But I'm worried about the nursing home. I don't have that amount of money to get a nanny and we cannot let Nana stay at the nursing home.” “I can help. I'll ask ‘Matt’ to lend me some money,” Claudia offered. Matt was Claudia's boyfriend. He was well-to-do but had helped our family with almost all our needs, and the last thing I wanted was to burden him again. “No. Claudia don't ask Matt for anything. I'll figure this out,” I murmured, a crazy idea was brewing in my head. What if I requested six months' salary in advance from my boss? No company would take such a risk. No boss would even contemplate an idea so ridiculous. But my boss was Jeremy. “What will you do?” Claudia's worried voice sounded. I shrugged, smiling sadly. The problem with this was that I felt like it was my duty to fend for my family. Technically, it was my duty because I was the first child. And Nana had sacrificed so much for me. The least I could do was to swallow my pride and ask Jeremy. “Amelia, look.” Claudia was staring behind me, her eyes wide as saucers. My heart thumped in my chest as I turned and locked eyes with my boss. “Hello, Amelia.” Mum squinted her eyes at Jeremy. Then she turned to face me, a disappointed look on he face. “Did you tell him to come here?” Mum half yelled, her glare directed at me was stony. “No, I didn't. I don't know what he's doing here.” I protested. Both Mum and Claudia didn't look like they believed a word I said and I hated it. “I'm here to help you, Amelia. I've talked to my realtor and he has prepared a new home for you and your family. I'll foot Nana's bills and hire a nanny. Do you have any more requests?” Jeremy asked innocently. Innocent didn't do. Innocent didn't cut the fact that he cheated on me and hurt me. What stupid game was the universe playing with me? First, Jeremy came back into my life. Now, I was placed in a position where I had to choose. My family or my pride. “I don't need your help, Jeremy. Pretending to care about me is ridiculous. And just so you know, money isn't going to cut it.” “I know I hurt you, Amelia. I know I don't deserve your forgiveness but this is for my child.” Jeremy said, his gaze resting on my belly. “Who says it's yours?” I snapped angrily. “I know it's mine, Amelia. And don't fight me. Let me help you.” “I. Don't. Need. Your. Help.”CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT - AROUSEDLucian's POV"Lucian, is Mommy okay?" I heard Camilla's damn voice from the door that I'd locked to make this call. No, I wanted to say. But I wasn't that cruel to kids. I tossed my phone to the side and stood.Camilla's persistent knocking annoyed me. I was at a crossroads, at a loss on what to do for the first time in my life. I was Lucian Moreno.I was the Don. My family had been in control of the clan for centuries going back. We were the force behind the powerful, the fuel of the fast and furious in the high-profile society, the name behind every business at the top. I knew of the killings and the sickening way my father ruled. And I was determined to make a difference when I came into power. And so far, I'd done little harm. I killed when necessary, when it was inevitable. But with everything I did, I had a reason.Amelia Kishi waltzed into my home and made me break that fucking rule.I wasn't supposed to lift a finger in help except... she sold
CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN - DO WHATEVER YOU DEEM FIT FOR HERAmelia's POVWith every ounce in my body, I pushed Drake off me and slapped him twice. Only the sounds of our heart beating erratically could be heard. Drake's eyes were wide and he still didn't believe I'd just slapped him. "Why? Why did you kiss me?" I asked him in a whisper. I didn't trust myself not to whisper. If I tried... I'd fail and I'd cry. "Amelia, he's your husband!" "I don't care. You promised to take this slow. You hurt me once and I'm not going to let you hurt me again. I... I mean..." I wiped my lips and spat on the floor.Drake's eyes went to the spittle and he frowned."Don't you dare... touch me again. Oh. My. God. This is crazy. I can't stay here with a psycho. A man who doesn't know the meaning of slow. If you're forcefully kissing me now then what about tomorrow? Will you force me to sleep with you?" "Amelia, stop.""What's next? If I don't you'll hurt me?" "You know... I can see through this facade of
CHAPTER TWENTY SIX - WILL YOU GET PREGNANT AGAIN, AMELIA?Amelia's POV"Why would you want us to get married? I... I mean this is okay, Drake. Baby steps. We are still learning to trust each other." I said to Drake, all my tiredness momentarily forgotten.Drake nodded and walked two steps from the dining table. "Amelia, I know. I know that it will take a lot of time before you can trust me again, like before.""No, you don't know. If you know then you won't ask me to marry you again. What's the essence?" "A public wedding. To show the world and the whole city that you belong to me. That I have the prettiest bride around me..."Bastard! You don't and will never own me. Fuck this man. "There's no need for...""Amelia, please. I have arranged everything." That statement made my ears perk up. I frowned, this time not masking how I really felt. What did he mean by he made arrangements?"Drake... We are still married. If I can remember, we didn't have an annulment. I... I can't do this w
CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE - WILL YOU MARRY ME AGAIN?Amelia's POV"Lucian," I whispered, "Are you saying... are you saying that Drake... that he's killed them?"Lucian's silence was more damning than any words could have been. I felt a cold sweat break out on my skin. To be honest, I knew of Drake's dubious ways in business but... This? To think that he.."Wait, how long has this been going on? We've been married since five years. I... I never noticed.""Amelia, according to the dirt we have on him, it's been six years. Which means that he's been doing this even when married to you. He not just killed. He tortured them, as it seems."I swallowed hard. "Why... why would he do that? What purpose could that possibly serve?""You should know that. When you met him, he was so bent on destroying Jeremy right? He'd do anything for power. And control.""But... Lena. The maid. You think he's abusing her too?"Lucian nodded. "It's likely. Drake has a pattern. I think he preys on those who can't fight
CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR - THEY WERE SEXUALLY ABUSEDAmelia's POVLucian paused, his dark eyes darting between me and Seraphina, who was smirking. I sighed and reached for the first button of his shirt. My fingers shook as I undid it, and he watched me closely, breathing steadily despite the blood that was soaking his sleeve. Moving closer, my hands brushed against his chest as I worked my way down the buttons. When I finally pulled the shirt off, I tossed it onto the desk and turned toward the door. "Where are you going?" Seraphina asked.“Getting the first aid kit,” I didn't bother to glance back at her. “I need to tend to his wound.”“Forget about Lucian. It’s just a scratch.”I halted, turning back to her. “Just a scratch? You threw a knife at him! It hurt him.”With a dramatic sigh, she said, “Amelia, have you learned nothing? If you want to be part of this world, you need to think and act like us.”She walked over to the desk, picked up the knife, and my stomach churned as I watched
CHAPTER TWENTY THREE - TAKE YOUR SHIRT OFF, LUCIANAmelia's POVI was pacing around the room like a caged animal would, as my mind raced a million miles a minute. My hands trembled even as I couldn't stop fidgeting.Okay... I took a deep breath. Jeremy knows about one kid. Just one. He has no clue I had twins for him. That's a start, right? It'll make things easier. Maybe.I grabbed my head, trying to calm the storm inside me, when my phone buzzed on the desk. I moved to pick it up, but then I heard murmurs from the office opposite mine. Some staff were whispering. "Did you see her? Kissing the boss on her first day." One of them said. Another chimed in, "No shame at all. Who does that? Probably slept her way up to this position."I winced. Why? Why did people who knew nothing about me feel the need to assume? I turned to Isadora, who was sitting at her desk and ignoring my existence. She hadn't even glanced at me once. Sharing an office with her was nauseating. I'd have to talk to L
