CHAPTER TWO - GETTING A JOB
Amelia’s POV I was right. A month ago when I'd booked a flight that took me to Japan, Nana had taken a glance at me and asked me to make tea for her. My mother cursed Jeremy in our native language after I'd told them what he did. And my sister had been excited at the thought of getting a niece or nephew to play with. Every day, I still check my phone for updates about my ex-husband. After settling down here, I'd sent him divorce papers which he signed and our marriage was officially annulled. “Why do you look so sombre, Amelia. That's bad for your composure. You know you have to get this job.” Nana said in Japanese from where she sat on the love sofa. I sighed, rubbing my belly. I had a job interview today and I didn't want to mess that up. Our family needed the extra money and besides, I had to start saving up for my baby. But I couldn't shake this bad feeling off my body. I suddenly felt like ditching the interview and lying in my bed with a cup of coffee. Bad idea. Once the clock on the wall ticked right and my alarm sounded, I got up and headed for the door. “Good luck, My Amelia.” Nana's voice sounded behind me. The stairs that led to our apartment building were always steep, so I took my time. The bustling streets came into view and I stopped a taxi. “Bennett's Empire,” I gave the driver my location. “You're going for an interview, miss?” The driver asked me nicely in Japanese. “Yes,” I replied. “That's amazing. My wife is also going to be interviewed today. I pray she gets the job. She's pregnant.” Warmth spread through my body at his words. He looked quite happy and content. “Well, that's a good thing. It seems they are taking just pregnant ladies?” I chuckled at the absurdity of my words. “We are here, ma'am.” He said and got down to open the door for me. “Thank you,” I paid him off and my eyes turned to the building in front of me. The word ‘BENETT’ was written upfront in big, block letters. I couldn't wait to get interviewed. I walked into the gates, gazing around with awe. The interior was classy and posh, with floor-to-ceiling windows and sleek, extravagant furniture. I took the elevator to the 5th floor and introduced myself to a woman who took me to the boss himself. When the doors slid open, the woman gestured for me to go in while she walked away. I think I was so absorbed with the size and decoration of the office that I failed to recognise the voice and the person sitting behind that mahogany desk. When I finally turned, our eyes met and I froze. Something clicked in my head. Why didn't I think about this earlier? This was why the name of the company was so familiar. ‘BENETT’. Jeremy's family owned the BENETT EMPIRE. He was the freaking CEO. Damn. What the hell had I gotten my pregnant divorced self into? I decided to play it cool by acting ignorant. Tearing my gaze away from him, I clear my throat and make for the seat. “Good day, Mr. Calloway,” I said, bowing my head slightly, Japanese style. Jeremy still hadn't taken his eyes off me. But then he blinked and began going through my application file on his desk. Please, give me the job. I need it. I prayed in my heart. When his eyes twitched, I thought I'd lost all hope. “You're pregnant?” He gazed up at me, and confusion shone on his face. Oh no. My application contained the results of the test I was required to take by the company. Now he was aware of my state. What now? “Uhm… It's not showing yet, Sir.” I stated foolishly and his eyes turned dark. When he rose from behind that huge table, my eyes roamed his body. Still the same old Jeremy. The embodiment of hotness and masculinity. Those were one of the many qualities I'd fallen for, two years ago. “Is it mine?” He was now standing right in front of me while I fidgeted with the hem of my flowing dress. I could lie all I wanted. Who was I kidding? Jeremy could read me in and out like the back of his palm. Besides, my expression had already given me away. “Fuck, Amelia. It's mine, right? The child is mine.” He growled, like a male alpha whose mate was missing. “That doesn't change anything.” My voice was weak. “What do you mean it doesn't? Did you know about this before sending the divorce papers?” “With all due respect, sir. I am here for the job. And if you would rather discuss personal matters, I'll get up and leave.” “Amelia! You can't be serious.” “Try me,” He seemed to rethink his stand because his menacing aura was suddenly replaced with calmness. “Let's… Let's talk about this.” Jeremy's gaze at me was nothing more than tenderness. But I'd blocked out all possible pleas he could use. It was too late. I didn't owe him any explanation. He had a life of his own and although I didn't, I was trying to make one. “Are you going to interview me or what?” I snapped, annoyance clouding my voice. Christ! This was the least person I'd expected to bump into today. The universe better be playing a fucking game because what the hell? “You have the job, Amelia. You know I would've subjected you to an interview.” He looked exhausted in my eyes. I had spent two years with this man to know when he was going through a hard time. But that wasn't my problem anymore. “Can I leave now?” I got up on my feet, clutching my bag to my chest. Jeremy waved me off with his hand, and when I slipped out of his office, I heaved a sigh of relief. My phone buzzed in my bag. I swiped accept and brought it to my ear to answer the call. There was silence, and then a shriek, and a yell. “Amelia! Sis, can you hear me?” My sister's panicked voice sounded. “Mum and I just returned from work, and we found the door open. There was a robbery, I think. And Nana is… She's not breathing.” I felt my breath leave me as my phone slipped out of my hand.CHAPTER EIGHTEEN - CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT MY CHILDRENAmelia's POV"Do you like him enough to be our Daddy? Can he be mine and Caden's Daddy? Please, Mommy. Don't say no."I halted, mid-step, one of my hands gripping the rail. My lips parted and I ransacked my brain for a reply. Camilla stood beside me, her big eyes, round and hopeful. My baby girl didn't understand that what she had just asked for... wasn't a new doll or a bedtime story that I could easily give."Camilla..." I crouched slowly so we were face-to-face. "Sweetheart, I... Lucian is a good man, okay? But he's not your daddy. You already have a daddy."She frowned. "But he shouted at you. And you cried. I don't like it when you cry.""Who told you that?" "Nobody." She folded her arms, not meeting my eyes.Wow. I never disclosed that I was hit by Drake to my kids. What the hell was even happening these days? I sighed. "Baby. I know he hit me and that's not okay. But some things between grown-ups are complicated."She
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN - PLEASE MOMMY, DON'T SAY NO.Amelia's POVLucian likes me? "No," I said, shaking my head and forcing a nasal laugh. "Lucian is the Don. The Don doesn't like anyone. I've been led to believe that he owns people, manipulated them, maybe even protects them if it suits him... but love? Your brother doesn't have a heart."Seraphina raised a brow, a soft smile still painted across her face. "Believe what you want, but I've known my brother all my life. And I've never seen him act this way around anyone."I frowned, munching on some vegetables. "What way?""He's careful with you. He watches what he says. He even goes out of his way to make sure you're comfortable. Lucian doesn't do that. Not even for me."I didn't know how to respond to that. I pushed my plate away and stood. "Even if he does like me, it doesn't matter. I'm not interested.""Just don't break his heart. You might not like the kind of man he becomes if you do.""He has a heart to break?" I snorted and we la
CHAPTER SIXTEEN - THE DON LOVES ME?Jeremy's POV"You have to help me get it. I don't care what I have to do. Being a staff member at Cuddle Entertainment Industry has been a dream, Jeremy." Isadora sat cross-legged on the couch, opposite me in my study. For the umpteenth time since she'd walked in here, I ignored her.A white file sat on my desk. One of my private investigators had delivered to my doorstep this morning. He had said in that file was all the information he could gather on a certain... Amelia. Yeah, you guessed right. My ex-wife. After bumping into her last night, and seeing the cold look she threw at me, and the fact that she hadn't even bothered to call me by my first name. The informalities had vanished into thin air. Granted, I hurt her. But I knew Amelia more than I knew anyone. If she hid all the emotion she felt toward me, that wasn't good. After I'd left her, I looked back and a man I didn't recognise was engaging in a conversation with her. With a sigh, I pul
CHAPTER FIFTEEN - MISSION SUCCESSFULAmelia's POVI moved with the grace of a lady who knew why she was here and would get the job done. The ball held different calibres of people. Men in tux, designer suits, casual wears and then the ladies in ball dresses, the whores who were here for business, let's not talk about the wives of these business men, glittering in over the top ball gowns, tight satin dresses, skin out, breasts up, all holding their heads high like the could surpass the other.I was once the wife of a successful businessman. We attended social functions like this. We'd dance as a couple and make jokes until... He decided I was infertile and cheated on me. Now, he was married to the same woman with whom he'd cheated.I helped myself to a drink the waitress standing beside me was serving. The ice clinked as I brought it to my lips and downed the contents in one go. Glancing around me, I noticed the man had begun to disappear, one after the other. I sashayed forward, slip
CHAPTER FOURTEEN - SERAPHINAAmelia's POVI kept scrubbing my hands. There was no blood on them anymore, but I couldn't get the nasty sight out of my head. Lucian had made me dispose of the body of the man I'd shot. After a short while, I grabbed a face cloth from the sink and dried my hands with it.When I walked out of the bathroom, I saw Lucian sitting on the armchair that was closest to my bed. His legs were crossed, his tie loose and as usual, a glass of something was in his hand. Scotch. "You'll rub your skin off," He said, leaning back slightly."Yeah, maybe I should," I whispered, walking around to perch on the side of the bed.He scoffed, a lazy frown on his face. "Oh, don't start the waterworks again."He didn't get it, did he? I turned to face him. "I killed someone."He raised his glass in a mock toast. "Yes, you did."I breathed in to calm my angered self. "You think this is funny? I'm a murderer. How do I look my kids in the eye and say that to them?"Lucian stood slow
CHAPTER THIRTEEN - GETTING MY HANDS DIRTYAmelia’s POVI wasn't sure what I expected after sealing the deal with the devil. Maybe a handshake or a blood oath. Lucian simply adjusted the cuff of his suit and said..."Get up. We're leaving."I wanted to question his order. I needed to know where we were going at least. He was faster than I, each stride exuding confidence and an untouchable aura. We got to the black car waiting outside.Neither of us said a word until we were halfway across the city and deep into unfamiliar territory. "Have you ever been to Southgate?" He asked, keeping his eyes on the window.I shook my head.He smiled without looking at me. "Good. That makes this more fun."The car pulled up to an unmarked building that was eerily silent. Lucian stepped out, and I followed. The man at the door didn't bother checking our names. One glance at Lucian and he opened it.Inside was mesmerising. Velvet walls and crystal chandeliers. What was this place? It even reeked of cig
