LOGINDorian’s POV.
“Come on, Dorian,” Luka’s voice crackled through the Bluetooth speaker. “You’ve been holed up for weeks. One drink won’t kill you.”
I gripped the steering wheel tighter, eyes on the winding road ahead. “I’m not in the mood,” I replied flatly.
Luka’s been trying every attempt to get me out to drink with him but I avoided it as much as I could. I don’t have the luxury of leisure time anymore.
“You’re never in the mood,” Luka muttered, then sighed. “Fine. But don’t pretend like you don’t feel it.”
The call ended, but the words lingered. Don’t pretend like you don’t feel it.
Preventing me from wallowing too much in Luka’s words, a call came in. A perfect distraction. I picked the call to hear a distorted voice over the call. I gripped the steering wheel in frustration.
“I’m a busy man, Andrew. Call me when you find your spine,” I said coldly.
“That’ll be all.” I ended the call and turned my eyes back to the road, driving down the narrow stretch without a second thought.
A sharp scream pierced the night, followerd by rustling sounds picked by my heightened senses.
I rolled down the window slightly, seeing wolves chasing something at this time of the night. Except, that something was a someone. The woman being chased gripped her belly with one hand as she ran through the woods, glancing back occasionally to see the werewolves catching up with her until a wolf tackled her out of nowhere to the roadside while the others slowed down, trotting towards her.
Bandits.
Without a second thought, I got down from my car and shifted, unleashing Ash instantly as I ran with full force to tackle the black werewolf looming over her.
Sinking my fangs into his jugular vein, I felt his grip weaken as he dropped dead in an instant. Another lunged at me, claws slashing my back while the other hopped from a height in an attempt to attack.
The two wolves circled me, growling and snarling. I hopped on one, quickly pinning him to the ground as my claws tore through his back, my fangs sinking into his neck.
He whined as life drained out of him while the others retreated, leaving the woman bleeding out, her gray gown dyed red wth her own blood. She’s pale already and not healing fast enough. She’d need a hospital.
I shifted back and bent to carry her, only to see her face well under the moonlight.
A chuckle escaped my lips as I recalled her identity. What in the goddess’s name was Aaron Moonstone’s mate looking for all alone near the borders of Moonstone Pack?
Ash reared his head in my head, cockiness oozing from him and I chuckled in response. “Careful, boy. This one’s claimed.” I flicked my thumb over her neck, feeling the mark on it—faint, but still there. “I think.”
I carried her gently in my arms to the car before changing into a clean suit in my trunk.
Upon starting the car, I realized she’s still out and drove her straight to a private clinic in my Pack.
“See that she’s okay.” I ordered the healer who took her from my arms. I retreated to let them do their job.
“Alpha Dorian Valehart?” The healer called calmly, ushering me into her office and I followed.
She offered me a seat, a small smile plastered across her face as she began, “I’m delighted by the fact that you made it here as fast as possible. They’re out of the woods now. So she should be discharged by morning and you’ll be able to take her home. However, coupled with her situation and the attack, she might need as much time to fully heal. I believe you will see to that.”
I nodded briskly, but something caught my attention. “They?” I asked, suddenly intrigued.
The healer’s brow shot upward as if puzzled, but she returned her small smile almost immediately.
“Ah, yes. Well, she’s with a child. If you’d gotten here any later, she might’ve lost the baby. Even later than that and might’ve lost her own life.”
It all didn’t seem right to me. Like there’s a missing piece yet to put in place. Why would Aaron let his mate wander around when she’s pregnant?
“Uhm… Alpha? Are you with me?”
Jolting me out of my thoughts were the Healer’s words as I returned my gaze to her. “Yes, of course. Thank you, Healer Estel. I’ll go see her now, if that’s fine with you.”
She nodded briskly and I found myself walking into her ward.
In there, Lillian slept on the bed almost lifeless except for the faint rhythmic rising of her chest that showed an extremely slow breathing. Long dark hair sprawled over the pillow, a round face dusted with freckles and a heart shaped lip that seemed almost as pale as the sheets itself. She’s…undeniably beautiful.
I quickly shook the thoughts of her out of my head after realizing what I was doing. Fawning over my rival’s mate was definitely not my style.
My mind darted to a moment she’d accompanied the Moonstone prick as Luna to Nightspire Honor Night, an annual gala hosted by the Alpha King of Nightspire to recognize business tycoons and powerful Alphas. She looked elegant in her bold red dress and I struggled to believe the regal woman of then was the one casted out and barely clinging to life.
Usually, I don’t like to get my hands dirty. Especially, not with other people’s mates. Not after Ellie’s death. But I couldn’t just watch Lillian bleed out at the hands of wolves.
Ash growled in my head. He hated meddling just as much as I did and I responded mentally. “I hate it too. But we don’t have any choice right now.”
I took a seat adjacent to her bed, watching her sleep soundly as thousands of questions ran through my mind. Why was she out there, pregnant yet as prey for bandits?
Could he have casted her out? There’s no telling what boundaries Aaron Moonstone might have issues crossing. I shook my head, watching her stir in her sleep.
Lillian Moonstone’s in my care, and now, I want answers.
Dorian’s POV“Lillian, please don’t be like this,” I said, moving to follow her as she walked away. “What happened with Miranda, it was a mistake. A terrible mistake that I don’t even remember making, but a mistake nonetheless.”She stopped walking, but the silence that enveloped us was cold and heavy, nothing like the comfortable silences we used to share. For a long moment, she just stood there with her back to me, and I wondered if she was going to ignore me completely. Then she spoke, her voice quiet but clear in the morning air.“I actually wish it was just a mistake,” she said. “I wish it was something that happened randomly, without planning or purpose. But we both know that’s not true, is it? The elders orchestrated all of this because they don’t see me as fit to become your Luna. Because I’m not one of their daughters, not someone they chose and approved of.”“That doesn’t matter,” I insisted. “What the elders think doesn’t change how I feel about you.”“Doesn’t it though?” L
Dorian’s POVI’d been looking for Lillian all morning, needing to talk to her before I headed to the office for meetings I couldn’t postpone. After everything that had happened yesterday, we needed to actually sit down and have a real conversation instead of just reacting to one crisis after another.I checked our old shared bedroom first, then her private room, then several other places she might have retreated to. Finally, I ran into Alanna in the hallway carrying what looked like art supplies.“Have you seen Lillian?” I asked.“She’s in the garden,” Alanna said, her tone cooler than usual. Clearly she was upset with me about the Miranda situation, though she was professional enough not to say so directly. “She went out there about ten minutes ago.”“How is she?” I asked, though I already knew the answer would be some variation of “terrible.”“How do you think?” Alanna replied, then seemed to catch herself. “Sorry. That was unprofessional. She’s… managing. Trying to hold it together
Lillian’s POVI stared at Elder Carter as he emerged from the shadows, that sealed envelope clutched in his hand like a prize he was eager to deliver to someone.“What are you doing lurking around here?” I demanded, my voice still sharp with anger from what Miranda had done to Celeste. “Hiding in the gardens like some kind of spy?”“I came to see my daughter,” Elder Carter said smoothly, though his eyes held that same calculating coldness I’d seen before. “To make sure she’s settled comfortably and has everything she needs. Is that a crime?”“What’s that letter?” I asked, pointing to the envelope he was now trying to casually hide behind his back.“Nothing that concerns you,” he said, shifting his position so the envelope was less visible. But I’d already seen it, and my suspicions were immediately aroused. Who was he delivering messages to? What schemes were being coordinated right under our noses?“This is all planned, isn’t it?” I said, the pieces clicking together. “Everything Mir
Lillian’s POVI held Celeste tightly against me, my hands running over her small body to check for any signs of injury. “Did she hurt you, baby? Did Miranda do anything to hurt you physically?”“No,” Celeste whimpered against my shoulder. “She just talked to me.”“What did she say?” I demanded, looking past Celeste to glare at Miranda who was still sitting calmly on the bench with that infuriating smirk on her face.Miranda actually laughed, the sound light and mocking. “Oh, Lillian, you need to calm down. I didn’t hurt your precious daughter. We just had a nice conversation about honesty and truth. Nothing wrong with that, is there?”“Everything about you is wrong,” I said, my voice shaking with rage.“Careful,” Miranda said, her smile widening. “You’re getting very worked up over nothing. You know, someone in my condition needs to be very cautious. Too much stress, too much conflict babies can be so fragile. They can just… slip away. And never come back.”The words were clearly mean
Lillian’s POVI walked away from Dorian and headed straight to Celeste’s room, my emotions too raw and overwhelming to deal with anything else right now. I needed to hold my daughter, needed to ground myself in something pure and uncomplicated before I completely fell apart.Celeste was sitting on her bed playing with her dolls when I entered, and the moment she saw my face, her expression shifted to concern.“Mommy, why are you crying?” she asked, immediately abandoning her toys to come to me.I sank down onto her bed and pulled her into my arms, hugging her tightly against my chest like she was the only solid thing in a world that had turned to quicksand.“I’m okay, baby,” I lied, stroking her hair. “Just a hard day.”“Who was that lady?” Celeste asked, her voice muffled against my shoulder. “The one with the orange hair that everyone was yelling about?”My heart clenched. Of course she’d heard the commotion. The pack house wasn’t that big, and we hadn’t exactly been quiet during th
Lillian’s POVSeeing Miranda pressed against Dorian like that, her arms around him and his hands on her shoulders to steady her, infuriated me in ways I couldn’t even fully articulate. It hurt on a visceral level seeing another woman claiming physical comfort from my mate, playing the damsel in distress while he instinctively protected her.“She’s lying,” I said, my voice coming out stronger than I felt. “Dorian, she’s lying about all of this. She hit me first, she’s been threatening me and Celeste, and now she’s twisting everything to make herself look like the victim.”“I saw it happen,” Alanna interjected firmly, stepping forward to stand beside me in solidarity. “I came around the corner just in time to see Miranda slap Lillian across the face. Hard. Lillian only defended herself after being struck first. Everything Miranda is saying is a manipulation.”But Elder Rex moved to block Alanna’s path, his expression stern and dismissive. “You’re Lillian’s close friend and confidante. O
Dorian’s POV.“Still no sight of her?” I asked Oren, a young healer who had offered to find Lillian for me. Oren shook his head negatively and left my side to socialize with other people in the hall. She’d promised to come right back after checking on Celeste. I knew she’d taken that as avenue to
Lillian’s POVI screamed for help, my voice echoing through the pack house with pure panic. “Help! Someone help! Someone collapsed!”Within seconds, guards came rushing into my room, their expressions alert and weapons drawn as they assessed the situation. Right behind them came Alanna, still in he
Lillian’s POVTheir words stabbed through my heart like knives, each syllable carefully chosen to inflict maximum damage. I wished desperately that I’d listened to Aiden, that I’d let him stay in the room or refused to meet with them at all. But it was too late
Lillian’s POV.“Let me go!” I tried wiggling my way out of Aaron’s firm grip but I couldn’t, as he was too strong for me. My hand began to hurt but he wouldn’t let go.“Why the fuck are you here, Lillian?!” Aaron fired, loosening his grip up on me. I fired back with anger. “Accompanying my mate t
