Chapter 001
"Divorce.." The word escaped my mouth in slow whispers, my eyes glued on the paper Kyle just handed to me. "Yes Selene, I want a divorce. Sign it as fast as possible," he said with so much ease that made me wondered if he had ever loved me for the past five years of our marriage. "Kyle.." I muttered, my voice low, struggling to stifle the tears threatening to flow down my eyes. "Let's talk this through. We've been married for five years. You can't throw this away for no reason. We've been building this for a long time. Please don't do this to us Kyle. And if this is a prank, you got me." I said, letting out a dry anxious laugh. But Kyle never laughed back—he didn't say it was a prank. He refused to ease my pounding heart. My leg wobbled and I fell to the floor, my eyes never leaving his. Those eyes, he meant it. Kyle had made up his mind to throw our marriage away. I wondered what happened, I wondered why my husband of good five years chose to divorce me. I had done nothing! Absolutely nothing and leaving this morning, he had pecked me, kissed me, and smiled at me like I was the most delicate thing in his life. He had said how much he loved me just this morning. What came over him? Tears I didn't know I had in my eyes streamed down without holding back. "Kyle please don't do this to me.. I am your wife! Don't prank me to this extent!" I screamed, frustrated, but he stood, his face expressionless and his eyes cold. This wasn't my husband, he had changed in just a few hours. "You have just today to leave this house, Selene." He said and I almost peed on my pants. This wasn't happening, Kyle wasn't doing this to me! "Kyle please, please don't do this to me, don't throw me out. I'm your wife, I've always been." I begged, my voice desperate. But his face was turned away from me, he wasn't accepting any of my pleas, and he wasn't telling me why he had to divorce me out of the blue. "At least tell me what I did wrong, tell me the reason you want to dissolve our marriage." I sniffed. Just then, our entrance door pushed open, and Audrey Smith came out. My forehead creased and then, my eyes almost bulged out of their sockets “Kyle’s ex-fiancée.” This left my mouth in slow whispers. Why was she back here in California? And why was she here in my house? Except that Kyle had already given me a divorce. Trying to wrap my head around everything, she was already in Kyle's arms. "Are we leaving now?" she said to Kyle, with a smile on her face while fondling with his collar. I scoffed painfully. Now I know where all these were coming from. It was now obvious. Kyle's ex was back in the city and he ran back to her. Kyle decided to divorce me because his long-lost ex was back. My lips quivered, fighting off the tears threatening to spill down my face again. I wouldn't cry anymore. Not in front of them. Even though I loved Kyle, he hadn't been such a great husband. He kept late nights, he was never always soft with me—almost as if he never truly loved me. These past days he looks at me like I was his worst enemy. But I kept doing my duties as his wife, hoping that this was just a phase and I'd eventually have him as a husband who truly loves me, but instead, Kyle served me a divorce. "We are leaving now, and Selene, don't make this harder, don't stretch this. I'd give you anything you want." He swiftly brought out his cheque, wrote something on it, and threw it at me. "Let's go," he muttered, grabbing her hand and holding it with so much softness that it made my heart ache. Kyle had never held me like that. Just then, he halted and turned his head to look at me. "Be fast about moving out, Audrey might want to move in today," he said with so much impatience that made me questioned my worth. Why did Kyle speak to me with so much recklessness and no remorse? Why do I feel I was the only one who had participated in this marriage for the past five years? Pain pierced through my chest like a knife. It felt almost as if I could spit out blood. Then the door banged shut behind them and brought me back from my reverie. It hit me hard all over again—Kyle's ex-fiancée returned to California, and he didn't think twice before throwing me away. I sniffed in, still in disbelief. Just then, my phone started ringing.. When I looked at the screen, I breathed in deeply—my result must've been ready. I picked it up on the second ring. "Hello Mrs Yate, how are you doing today?" the doctor's voice sounded. I cleared my throat gently, "I'm doing great Doctor Daniel. Thank you." "Will it be okay if you drop by at the hospital later today? Your results are ready," he muttered, his tone soft. "Alright Doctor, I'm coming now to get it, thank you so much," I muttered and with that, he ended the call. When I got into the house, my jaw clenched tight as I met Kyle and his mistress making out in our living room. I gulped heavily. This was a sight I was supposed to get used to now till Grandpa gets better. I balled my fist tighter and my teeth clenched. Just then, as if noticing me, they disengaged from the kiss.“Selene.” Kyle’s cold voice murmured. I nodded my head and walked past him, but he grabbed my arm. I jerked it off from his grip immediately. “You’re not leaving are you?” he muttered, his eyes panicked Of course I would leave, but after I'm done taking care of Grandpa. “Yes I’m leaving..” he didn't let me finish before he grabbed my shoulder, so tight it was beginning to hurt “What are you doing? Let me go!” I said but he still held on to my shoulder, his eyes getting cold. “How dare you, after everything I said to you? You still dare to want to leave? You want me to lose my inheritance and also risk Grandpa’s health?! How dare you!” his voice sounded, while crush
“What do you want?” I asked, my face neutral. “Selene, you must stick to the plan. Don’t cause any issues. Do what I said. Behave as if nothing happened and we are still the best couple, I never gave you a divorce.” He said, as if threatening me. “And if I don’t do that? What will you do?” I asked, my face contorted in anger and my eyes glaring hard. “Well, I wouldn’t do anything to you, but Grandpa, think about Grandpa’s health.” He said and my face went pale. He was right, if I admitted that he gave me a divorce, I was risking Grandpa’s health who loved me so much. My cold eyes glared hard at him, and I wrenched my arm away from his grip.I looked between him and his mistress, and I turned around to leave. “Selene you have to do as I told you.” He whispered behind my back as I took off. I heaved a heavy sigh, torn between what to do. On one hand, my marriage with Kyle was over and he had his mistress, on the other hand I found out I was pregnant and now I had to pretend ever
I raised my head to see Doctor Daniel squatting beside me."Is everything okay Mrs Yate?" he asked, his voice soft and I nodded my head."Yes, I'm fine, Doctor," I muttered, my voice hoarse. He knew I wasn't telling the truth, but decided not to press further. And I was thankful for that, the least of what I wanted right now was to explain my situation to anyone. He heaved a heavy sigh and brought out an envelope, holding it out to me."Here's your result Mrs Yate, and congratulations, you're a few weeks gone," he muttered and my head snapped for a moment. "Wha.. What do you mean a few weeks gone, Doctor?" I stammered, wondering if it was truly what I was thinking. "You're pregnant Mrs Yate. And you must do anything to avoid stress at this moment, for the baby," he muttered once again, and this time I got it. My heart began beating out of rhythm. I was pregnant. What was this supposed to mean? How was this supposed to make me feel? Kyle just gave me divorc
After packing the necessary things I would need into my bigger box, I dragged it out to the living room. My eyes looked up at the chandelier Kyle's grandpa had gifted me at our wedding. Tears brimmed in my eyes. I never imagined a day as bad as this one would ever come—a day when I'd pack out of my husband's house. I looked down at my palm where I had the cheque Kyle had thrown at me earlier. I tore it into several pieces and placed them on the center table. I wasn't here for his money, I didn't need his pity, all I wanted was to stay by his side forever and be loved by him, if he couldn't give me that, then I didn't need his money.I left the bag there, opened the door, and darted off from the building. I needed to get my result from Doctor Daniel, then come back, pick up my box, and be gone forever, just as Daniel wanted. Just as I was about to stop a taxi, my phone started ringing. I looked at the screen and my forehead creased. Why was he calling? To as
