‎I raised my head to see Doctor Daniel squatting beside me.

‎

‎"Is everything okay Mrs Yate?" he asked, his voice soft and I nodded my head.

‎

‎"Yes, I'm fine, Doctor," I muttered, my voice hoarse.

‎

‎He knew I wasn't telling the truth, but decided not to press further. And I was thankful for that, the least of what I wanted right now was to explain my situation to anyone.

‎

‎He heaved a heavy sigh and brought out an envelope, holding it out to me.

‎

‎"Here's your result Mrs Yate, and congratulations, you're a few weeks gone," he muttered and my head snapped for a moment.

‎

‎"Wha.. What do you mean a few weeks gone, Doctor?" I stammered, wondering if it was truly what I was thinking.

‎

‎"You're pregnant Mrs Yate. And you must do anything to avoid stress at this moment, for the baby," he muttered once again, and this time I got it. My heart began beating out of rhythm.

‎

‎I was pregnant. What was this supposed to mean? How was this supposed to make me feel? Kyle just gave me divorce papers, asking me to get out of his house as soon as possible, then asking me again to stay and pretend as if nothing happened till he gets his inheritance.

‎

‎Why was nature playing with me? I spent five good years with Kyle with no sign of pregnancy and now that everything was falling apart, it came.

‎

‎Oh my world, what am I supposed to do now, inform Kyle? Leave to take care of the baby alone? Either way, I would still end up taking care of her alone because Kyle already let me off.

‎

‎I've never been so confused in my life. This was supposed to be good news but I didn't even know what to feel or the right decision to make.

‎

‎I felt torn. Should I accept the offer from Kyle and stay with him maybe everything would change and I'd have him back? The thought of being a single mother terrified me already.

‎

‎My thoughts were going haywire until I heard someone speak.

‎

‎"Mrs Yate? Mrs Yate?" Doctor Daniel called out to me frantically, worry written on his forehead.

‎

‎"Is everything okay with you?" he muttered.

‎

‎"Yes, thank you, Doctor," I muttered and picked up my bag, which I left on his scanning bed.

‎

‎"I'd be taking my leave now, thank you for all you do," I muttered and with that, I darted off from his office.

‎

‎ When I got outside, I couldn't stop thinking about the shocking news.

‎

‎How did I get pregnant now of all times?

‎

‎I looked down at my stomach and it was still very flat, like there was nothing inside, yet I had a whole life growing in there.

‎

‎Silently standing for so long, I made my decision. I wouldn't go back to Kyle's house, not even to pick up my box.

‎

‎I had torn his cheque and dropped it on his room table, he should see it there when he gets back.

‎

‎I had some money in my account, and that should be enough for me to travel far away from this monster and get to start at least an average life for me and my baby.

‎

‎Working in the company for the past few years, before he stopped me completely, I managed to save some money that I didn't know I was saving.

‎

‎Bills were automatically paid in the house, hence the money just sat in my account every time I received my own pay for the month.

‎

‎All I ever used the money to do was buy a dress for myself once in a while, aside from that I didn't use my money for anything in the house.

‎

‎Even to change my wardrobe, Kyle often gives me before I even ask for it. Thinking about all this, a fresh pool of tears welled up in my eyes

‎

‎Just then, my phone began ringing again. I looked at the screen and my mouth opened wide—Kyle's grandfather.

‎

‎My hand shook as I contemplated whether to take his call or not, knowing I might have a change of heart if I heard his voice.

‎

‎Hence I watched my phone ring till the end. Ready to stop the coming taxi, my phone began ringing again, and this time panic surged down my spine.

‎

‎What if something had happened to him, why was he calling.?

‎

‎Without thinking anymore, I picked up the call.

‎

‎"Dear Selene," he muttered, his voice shaky and slow.

‎

‎My heart sank, Grandpa must be sick again—he doesn't usually sound this way.

‎

‎His voice was always full of life, but today, it felt dull, it felt struggling.

‎

‎I heaved a deep breath.

‎

‎"Grandpa," my vulnerable voice muttered.

‎

‎"My dear granddaughter. Your Grandpa is seriously sick, why have you not come to see me?" his frail voice sounded.

‎

‎"Kyle, that stupid brat, he didn’t tell you I’m sick?” he muttered, then started coughing so much that it broke my heart into several pieces.

I held onto my flat stomach.

“Grandpa, I didn’t know you were sick. I’m so sorry.” I muttered, my voice low.

“It’s okay dear. I know, will you come to see me now?” He requested and I nodded vigorously even though he wouldn’t see me.

“Yes Grandpa, I’m coming right away.”

I immediately stopped the next taxi and sprang into it, telling him my address.

When we got to his residence, I came down, paid the taxi, and scrambled off.

I walked faster, scared and worried for Grandpa. He was the kindest in this family.

Just as I got into Grandpa’s compound, I was met with a face I detested the most.

The face that her return had done nothing but destroy my marriage.

What was she doing here? I’m sure Grandpa wouldn’t request to see her.

Just then, Kyle came behind her.

I wrenched my gaze away from them and turned to take the direction to Grandpa's room

But just then, Kyle grabbed my arm.

My forehead creased, what does he want? He must really think I came because of his call.

He should keep on dreaming. Once I see Grandpa now as he requested, I’d be taking my leave.

When I got into the house, my jaw clenched tight as I met Kyle and his mistress making out in our living room. I gulped heavily. This was a sight I was supposed to get used to now till Grandpa gets better. I balled my fist tighter and my teeth clenched. Just then, as if noticing me, they disengaged from the kiss.“Selene.” Kyle’s cold voice murmured. I nodded my head and walked past him, but he grabbed my arm. I jerked it off from his grip immediately. “You’re not leaving are you?” he muttered, his eyes panicked Of course I would leave, but after I'm done taking care of Grandpa. “Yes I’m leaving..” he didn't let me finish before he grabbed my shoulder, so tight it was beginning to hurt “What are you doing? Let me go!” I said but he still held on to my shoulder, his eyes getting cold. “How dare you, after everything I said to you? You still dare to want to leave? You want me to lose my inheritance and also risk Grandpa’s health?! How dare you!” his voice sounded, while crush

“What do you want?” I asked, my face neutral. “Selene, you must stick to the plan. Don’t cause any issues. Do what I said. Behave as if nothing happened and we are still the best couple, I never gave you a divorce.” He said, as if threatening me. “And if I don’t do that? What will you do?” I asked, my face contorted in anger and my eyes glaring hard. “Well, I wouldn’t do anything to you, but Grandpa, think about Grandpa’s health.” He said and my face went pale. He was right, if I admitted that he gave me a divorce, I was risking Grandpa’s health who loved me so much. My cold eyes glared hard at him, and I wrenched my arm away from his grip.I looked between him and his mistress, and I turned around to leave. “Selene you have to do as I told you.” He whispered behind my back as I took off. I heaved a heavy sigh, torn between what to do. On one hand, my marriage with Kyle was over and he had his mistress, on the other hand I found out I was pregnant and now I had to pretend ever

I muttered, my voice low, struggling to stifle the tears threatening to flow down my eyes. ‎ ‎"Let's talk this through. We've been married for five years. You can't throw this away for no reason. We've been building this for a long time. Please don't do this to us Kyle. And if this is a prank, you got me." I said, letting out a dry anxious laugh. ‎ ‎But Kyle never laughed back—he didn't say it was a prank. He refused to ease my pounding heart. My leg wobbled and I fell to the floor, my eyes never leaving his. ‎ ‎Those eyes, he meant it. Kyle had made up his mind to throw our marriage away. ‎ ‎I wondered what happened, I wondered why my husband of good five years
