Veronica's POV:

Was it even possible to feel both turned on and angry at the same time?! I had no idea before.

He was playing psychological games, that much was clear... this was a 'push and pull' game... he was dangling his dominance to me only to be just out of reach to drag me into surrender.

I wondered where he even learned this from?!

I knew that I should give it back to him, at least this time.

I picked up the leather handle that was beside the nightstand table and pushed Max over the mat

  • Desired by the Billionaire Brothers   Ashley Pemberton

Veronica's POV:The hotel lobby was the kind that made you aware of your posture immediately upon entering... marble floors, ceilings that went up further than necessary, the particular silence of expensive spaces that have been acoustically engineered to absorb ordinary human noise and return only a curated version of it.Ashley Pemberton had chosen it, which was entirely consistent.I stood beside Max near the lobby entrance and looked at the elevator bank and prepared myself in the way you prepare for weather you have experienced before and did not enjoy the first time."Tell me about her," Max said quietly.I considered where to begin."She wrote poetry in her thirties," I said. "Published two collections. They were actually well regarded... I read one once, genuinely beautiful work, which made everything else about her more confusing." I kept my voice low. "She has been on Real Housewives twice. Not as a peripheral figure... as someone the producers called back because she gener

  • Desired by the Billionaire Brothers   Plan C

Chase's POV:"You confessed."I said it quietly, which was how I said things when I was most angry, because volume was for people who had not yet learned that control was more frightening than noise.Dr. Matthew's voice on the phone had the specific quality of a man who had already accepted the consequences of what he had done and was now simply waiting for them to arrive. That acceptance made him less useful to me, which was its own kind of problem."They were already inside," he said. "Maximilian Ashford was already holding my jacket. I had perhaps four seconds to make a decision...""And you chose incorrectly," I said."Chase...""You chose incorrectly and now we are having this conversation instead of the conversation we should be having, which is about next steps." I set down the glass in my hand. "You have exposed yourself. You have exposed the payment. You have given them a thread that leads directly back to this office." I paused. "I hope two million was enough, Matthew, becau

  • Desired by the Billionaire Brothers   Pressed the buttons

Veronica's POV:I was out of the car before Max had fully stopped it.My leg protested the impact of hitting the gravel, and I ignored it completely, moving toward the shape on the ground that was Theo with the single-minded focus of someone who has stopped processing anything except the most important thing.Max had gone completely still behind me. I heard him, or rather I heard the absence of him, the way his movement just stopped when he saw his brother on the ground, and I knew he was frozen in the same way as me.How can I help him with that when I myself was gone?I reached Theo first. He was on his hands and knees on the gravel, not unconscious, which was the first thing I checked, and his lips were moving with the continuous low murmur of someone having a conversation with a room only they could see."Father, please," he was saying. The words came out fragmented, overlapping themselves. "I panicked. I didn't mean to crash the car. I didn't mean to fail this driving license tes

  • Desired by the Billionaire Brothers   The crash of Theo

(Trigger warning: This chapter contains descriptions of depression, childhood trauma, and hallucinations. Please read at your own risk.)Theo's POV:I hung up.I knew Max would call back immediately and he did, and I watched his name light up the screen twice and then set the phone face down on the passenger seat and pressed the accelerator down with the intention of someone making a choice. The road opened up ahead of me and I let it.The speed felt like the first honest thing in weeks, no performance in it, no calculation, just movement and the engine and the dark road going somewhere that wasn't here. My hands were firm on the wheel. Whatever the hallucinogens had done to me in that hotel bathroom, they had at least left me this, the ability to drive, to move, to go.I was going to the Vipassana centre outside the city. Brother Anand's retreat, the one I had visited twice in my early twenties when the noise of my life had become briefly unbearable and silence had been the only pr

  • Desired by the Billionaire Brothers   Driving alone

Veronica's POV:Dr. Matthew was a man who had clearly prepared a face for this moment. It was a professional face, composed, mildly concerned. He had it arranged and ready by the time Max stepped fully into the office, and under different circumstances it might have been convincing.Max was not different circumstances."Theodore Ashford," Max said, without preamble. "He has been your patient. Where is he.""Mr. Ashford, I completely understand your concern," Dr. Matthew said, like he was reading from an internal script. "But I'm sure you're aware that patient confidentiality prevents me from...""I'm not asking for his file," Max said. "I'm asking if you have seen him today and whether you know where he is right now.""I haven't seen Theodore since our last scheduled session. Whatever he has communicated to you about his whereabouts, I genuinely have no information beyond...""He hasn't communicated anything," I said from the doorway. "That is the problem."Dr. Matthew looked at me br

  • Desired by the Billionaire Brothers   Making him go crazy

Theo's POV:The hotel room was neutral in the way I had chosen it to be with no history, no associations, no maid who looked at me with worried eyes that I didn't have the energy to reassure.I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the small white tablet in my palm.My therapist, Dr. Matthew, had prescribed it for anxiety. Just to take the edge off, he had said. Not a solution, just something to help you function while we do the real work.I swallowed it with water and set the glass down and waited. An hour later I felt worse. Not dramatically worse. Just a slow, gray settling, like the lights in the room had been dimmed by someone I couldn't locate to ask them to stop. I sat with it and told myself it was temporary, an adjustment period, the expected response of a body encountering something new."Just anxiety," I said aloud to the empty room. "It's just the medication adjusting."The empty room did not confirm or deny this.I thought about calling Max. Put the phone down before I

Veronica's POV:The way Chase cursed me, the venom in his threats, only infuriated my anger even more. How dare he?!Chase turned and started walking quickly back toward the gardens, clearly trying to escape the crowd, the judgment, the scene I'd created. But I wasn't done with him. Not even close.

Isla's POV:"You were right, Max." I said reluctantly. I stood on the beach watching him prepare his surfboard, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the sand. He was checking the wax, testing the fin placement, moving with the kind of easy confidence that came from years of practice."
