The Angel

(The following scenario is picked up from a K drama. I did it because I am no medical professional so please no bad comments on this!)

Angela skimmed through her Thesis paper making sure everything was perfect. This wasn't just any thesis paper. This had the potential to be the turning point of her career.

She arranged the papers meticulously and prepared herself to meet the Chief Surgeon. She opened the door of her office, climbing up the stairs when he bumped into someone.

Angela hissed as the steaming hot coffee scaled her hands and what's even more painful is her thesis paper is now blotted with brown coffee.

"Fuck," Angela cursed. She glared at the person she had bumped into.

"Oh my! I am so sorry about this!" Claire Brown faked dramatically. She picked up the wet papers and handed them to Angela.

"Are you blind Dr Clair?" Angela snapped, knowing that it was deliberately done to ruin her papers.

"You don't have to be so rude Angela! It was an accident and besides..." Claire snatched one of her thesis paper and scoffed. "These are not even half as accurate-"

"Give me that!" Angela snatched the paper, tearing it in the process. Great!

"It's okay Angela. You can redo a better one," Claire patted Angela's shoulders with a scornful grin and stepped down from the stair making her high heels click loudly against the steps.

Angela stepped down from the stairs as well. It wasn't a big deal since she had already saved the files on her computer. All she needed was to print it again.

After crumbling the papers in balls and throwing them in the trash. She grabbed a can of cold coffee from the vending machine and drank it to calm her nerves.

"That bitch! Why didn't you slap her!" Sara Watson growled, banging her fist on Angela's work desk. They were sitting inside Angela's office.

"Let it go, she is not worth my energy anyway," Angela chided.

"Should I slap her for you? You worked so hard on the Thesis paper..." Sara looked worried for her bestie who looked like she woke up from the grave. She saw how Angela pulled an all-nighter to perfect those papers.

But even so, Angela looked immensely pretty. From her silky cinnamon brown hair, perfectly tanned skin, to her flawless figure. No one would guess she a doctor at first glance. But her prudish and diligent personality suited her profession.

"No worries, I had saved my paper so all I need to do is print and voila!" Angela leisurely sipped all of her cold coffee.

"Nice one!"

"After this, I will be a professor, Sara! And my fees are gonna double," Just thinking about it made Angela feel bliss.

"Such a greedy bitch," nudging her elbow. Both of them laughed like idiots until the nurse called Angela for an emergency.

Angela ran to check what was going, people were gathered and looking at something or SOMEONE with a mixture of disgust and pain. Her fellow doctors were also present there as well.

"Move aside there is an emergency patient!!"  A man yelled. He was wearing a construction worker's uniform.  He is dragging a stretcher where a man was lying there unconscious.

That wasn't the unsettling thing about him.

A meter-long rob had plunged into his abdomen and a concrete slab attached to the bottom. This scene is screaming death for the man. He wasn't even in a state to the pain.

The first thing they had to figure out is how are they going to get rid of the slab. If they going to remove the rod then the patient is sure to die from blood loss!

Angela did not have time to waste. She picked up the phone to call Senior Charles.

"Dr Charles you have a call! It's Dr Angela," The assistant nurse placed the phone on Dr Charles's ear who is currently busy in the operating room.

"What is the situation?" Dr Charked asked while carefully stitching his patient's stomach. He looked really calm and composed on other hand Angela is going through panic walking back and forth.

"He's a 45-year-old man and he has an iron rod measuring approximately one meter long piercing through his abdomen. He also had an irremovable concrete slab hanging off of one side of him," Angela explained as quickly but precisely as she could.

The surgeons present in the OR looked at each other.

"Concentrate!" Dr Charles yelled at them. And so they did.

"Location of penetration?"

From the lower back towards the upper left of the abdomen askew," Angela answered.

"His vitals?"

"Thankfully his blood pressure is normal at 119, his heart rate is 130. He doesn't have massive bleeding externally."

"He could get an intraabdominal haemorrhage so, so look at his abdominal sonogram and keep a watch on his vitals. I'll remove it."

"Yes, understood," She hung up the phone.

Dr Charles looked at his subordinates with threatening eyes. "We are going to wrap this up in 30 minutes, so focus."

"Yes, Sir!"

All of them pulled the stretcher to the OR as carefully as they could, not disturbing the iron bar which is threatening to pull out at any moment. They prepared the EKG and other medical equipment needed for the surgery.

Clair went to prepare the monitor to check his vitals. "The monitor is prepared!" She ran to into the man who was keeping the concrete slab in place. Angela ran to keep the rod in place but to their misfortune. The rod began to slip down, tearing the man's organs, falling down with a loud thud.

Bloor oozed up from the deep wound as if a bloody fountain had formed on the spot. Some of it fell on Angela's terrified face. The EKG beeped loudly like a death siren. Dion, her fellow intern quickly covered the opening so no more blood would come out.

But it failed miserably.

"Doctor Claire get some Gauze here! Quick!" Dion yelled.

"BP is 90/60. it's dropping rapidly!" Sara cried.

"Give him an emergency transfusion, and pump more red blood cells to him!" Dion was losing his mind seeing how much blood is being thrown on the floor.

"Doctor, prepare the incubation please!"

Angela's head began to pound like a nail is being hammered into her senses. Her eyes ringing so loud that she had turned deaf to the people yelling at her. She stared blankly at the blood-stained hands-on Dion.

"Doctor Please connect to this!"

"Yes!"

The nurse rushed into Dr Charles's operation theatre again, with a panic-driven state of mind.

"Doctor, it's's ER again. Sounds like there was an accident."

"Connect"

Dion gulped an imaginary lump in his throat. "Doctor, the iron rod in the patient's body c-came out a-accidentally," He involuntarily emphasised the world accidentally. "His BP is dropping rapidly!"

You dimwits..." Dr Charles snarled. "Where is Angela Colton?"

Dion looked at Angela who looked dead by now.

"Angela Colton are you fucking listening?!" Doctor Charles bellowed so loud that it could wake up a dead man. Angela flinched, finally coming to her senses.

"y-yes Doctor!" She answered.

"Hold him for 10 minutes, I'll be there soon UNDERSTOOD??!!!"

"Y-yes I understand!" Angela started to work her brain again, though she could not ignore the rapid racing of her heart she had to do something!

all of them were struggling with the gauze and wrapped it around the patient's profusely bleeding wound. But of these attempts were futile. Since the blood flow was impossible to stop.

Angela picked up her surgical and draped it around her body, Sara helped her with it. She put on the white rubber gloves and said, "Get me something for dropping and a scalpel."

"Okay!"

Angela had no time to waste, she picked up the scissors and opened the gauze wrapped around the wound that Dion had painstakingly covered up.

"What are you doing?!" Dion asked looking at her as if she is insane.

"At this point, there is a possibility of damage in the main artery. Then we don't have much time," Angela said looking like she knew what is doing. Dion immediately conjectured what she meant and helped her open the gauze.

She marked the point she is going to cut. "If we delay like this, blood will fill up his abdomen then we won't be able to secure a clear sight. I will make the smaller possible incision,"

She grabbed the scalpel and made a small cut just so no more blood would stream out of the patient. While his subordinates and Dr Claire were struggling with the Gauze.

She inhaled sharply and plunged her hand inside the patient's body. She had to find it.

"Are you crazy?!" Claire shouted.

"Shut up! For now!" Angela needed to find an artery. Suddenly the bleeding stopped. Everyone felt silent. The EKG is beeped in a more consoling way.

"The pulse is stabilising..." Dion breathed.

"Phew..."

Dr Charles called once again.

"How is it?" He inquired.

"H-his vitals are stabilising."

"How about bleeding?"

"There was a splenic artery bleeding, but I am holding on to it for now." Dr Charles paused his breathing for a moment to register what he had just heard.

"Holding on to it? With what?" He asked.

"With my index finger..."

Dr Charles chuckled. This girl is really... Everyone else present in the OR smiled. This is indeed something crazy.

"Send him to the OR ASAP!"

"Yes sir!"

"Finish up the suture," instructed Dr Charles and walked out of the OR to get ready for his next operation.

And it was from that very occasion our Angela Colton is being known as the Doctor Angel. Dr Dion Richard chuckled at the silly nickname Angela is renowned for.

Although he had always been strict with her she had always excelled above expectation. A smile crept up to his face whenever he thought of her.

An angel indeed.
