Chapter 1

Author: You to You
When the cops called, I was in the kitchen preparing beef stew, my husband's favorite dish.

"Am I speaking with Mrs. Sterling? This is the police. We need you to come to Southmount Memorial Park right now to identify the body of your husband, Mr. Kenneth Sterling."

Kenneth's body? My mind went blank. The spatula slipped from my hand and clattered against the floorboards.

"What… What did you just say? My husband? That's impossible. Are you sure you've got the right person? He was perfectly fine when he left home this morning!"

The voice on the other end remained calm. "I'm sorry for your loss. Please come over as soon as possible to confirm his identity."

I hung up on him and fumbled through my contacts with trembling fingers. I dialed Kenneth's number repeatedly, only to be met with a busy tone every time.

It felt as though an invisible hand had clamped around my heart. My fingertips turned ice-cold. "Pick up! Please pick up…"

After the fourth attempt, I hung up. Panting heavily, I grabbed my keys and coat and rushed out the door.

I flagged down the first cab I saw and forced out, "Take me to Southmount Memorial Park."

The driver took one look at me and floored the gas pedal.

Tears welled up in my eyes, but I tilted my head back to keep them at bay.

Half an hour later, we arrived at our destination. As if snapping out of a trance, I threw the car door open and sprinted over.

An officer greeted me with a grave expression. "You must be Mrs. Sterling. Our preliminary assessment suggests sudden cardiac arrest."

He led me toward a grove of pine trees. From a distance, I spotted a figure leaning back against a tree.

Kenneth's eyes were closed, and his expression was serene. There was even the faintest hint of a gentle smile on his lips.

It was him. The last shred of hope in my heart shattered.

I stumbled toward him and threw my arms around him, wailing, "Kenneth!"

My wrist bumped against something hard. I froze for a split second before reaching into his pocket.

To my surprise, I pulled out a bottle of his emergency heart medication from his pocket. He had his life-saving medicine with him.

My heart felt as though it were being torn apart. Excruciating pain shot through my body in a heartbeat.

I sobbed hysterically, pounding his shoulders like a madwoman. "Why didn't you take your emergency medication? You fool!"

The officers exchanged a glance. Moments later, an older officer broke the silence.

"Based on our initial findings, the deceased most likely died from a sudden medical episode. At his age, seeing a photo of a loved one may have caused him considerable emotional distress, triggering a recurrence of his preexisting condition. He may not have had time to take his medication."

That explanation was bulletproof.

I held back tears and turned away, trying to pull myself together. However, my gaze inadvertently landed on a familiar face on the tombstone.

The woman was none other than Roxana Clark, Kenneth's ex-wife.

I went rigid.

The officers beside me didn't notice my unusual reaction. "The lady in the photo is so young. Is she your daughter? My condolences. Please take care of your health during this difficult time..."

Right after saying that, he handed me the belongings they had collected. "By the way, these are Kenneth's personal effects. Please keep them."

Kenneth actually had the nerve to ask me for the money he'd invested back. I almost laughed out loud. I slapped him hard across the face. "Here, have a slap instead!" His world came crashing down around him, and he was so furious that he fainted on the spot. My life, on the other hand, was only just beginning. …Things were far from over, though. As soon as she learned the news, Margaret rushed to the hospital. She took one look at her son and realized his manhood was missing. Her eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, and with a shrill shriek, she set off to seek revenge on Roxana. Unfortunately, she was just an old hag with little strength. In the end, she got beaten black and blue. Her head was so swollen that it looked like a pumpkin. Margaret returned to the hospital in tears to see Kenneth. Her ears were filled with the chatter of the medical staff. "Morgiana really drew the short straw marrying into that family." "Kenneth looks like a decent man on the outsid

I accepted them. My fingers trembled slightly with excitement. Kenneth's money was finally in my hands. This time, I was genuinely thrilled. However, I wore a devastated look on the surface. I sneered inwardly, took a deep breath, and forced myself to calm down. My voice was choked with emotion. "G-Get up first. Stop humiliating yourself in public..."He looked as though he'd been granted a reprieve and hurriedly scrambled to his feet. I turned my back on him and our neighbors and sniffled. "Let's talk after I calm down." Right after saying that, I clutched the stack of cards, walked back into my bedroom, and shut the door. The moment the door clicked shut, all the sorrow vanished from my face, and my eyes lit up. My first step was a total success. Now, it was time to make that shameless couple pay an even steeper price. …After getting my hands on his money, I pretended to forgive Kenneth, albeit reluctantly, while secretly setting my plan in motion. I knew him all

My hands and feet turned ice-cold, and hatred surged in my eyes. I wanted nothing more than to rush over and kill Kenneth and Roxana. But I couldn't do that just yet. I didn't emerge from my hiding spot until they had left in post-coital bliss. The air still reeked of their revolting rendezvous. After getting into the car, I created an alt account without a moment's hesitation. I clipped the most explicit part of the video and posted it online. The video had been censored to cover their explicit parts, so it didn't qualify as the distribution of pornography. It spread like wildfire. I sat in the car, watching the group chat notifications and repost alerts pop up one after another on my phone. I felt perfectly calm. Wasn't Kenneth so sure I'd always forgive him? Now, it was time for everyone to see what kind of lowlifes he and his beloved really were! …In less than an hour, the video had gone viral. I timed it just right and beat them home. I rushed into my bedroom, locked

Roxana had probably been pestering Kenneth relentlessly in the last few days. Three days later, when I brought up the deal again, his attitude had softened considerably. "Here, take this." He handed me a card. "Be extremely careful," he reminded me sternly."Don't worry." I accepted it with a sweet smile. "I won't let you down." The moment I stepped out of the house, the smile on my face instantly vanished. I'd won this first round. However, the real battle had only just begun. …After getting my hands on the money, I pretended to be busy setting up the business on the surface while secretly keeping a close eye on Kenneth's every move. He went to Roxana's place more and more frequently. His excuses were always the same—meeting clients. It was laughably clumsy. One evening, he told me he had a business dinner on the outskirts of the city. I had installed a mini tracker on his car beforehand, and I watched it stop next to a wetland park three miles from the golf course. I

"Absolutely." I inched closer to Kenneth and lowered my voice. "Briar told me it's a pretty big shipment, and we have to pay the full amount upfront within the next couple of days. If we can buy the whole lot, we can make at least 150 grand by reselling it." 150 grand was no small amount. Kenneth leaned back into the cushions. "It sounds like a good deal, but we don't have that much cash on hand right now." "I know." I took his hand. "So I was thinking… why don't we ask Mr. Fern to return the money we lent him? This deal is practically guaranteed to make a profit. We can pay him back as soon as we wrap it up. We can even give him an extra 20 grand as interest."His fingers twitched slightly before he casually withdrew his hand and picked up his glass to take a sip. "Mr. Fern's cash flow still hasn't recovered. It wouldn't be right for us to ask him for our money back now." I sneered inwardly. It wouldn't be appropriate, my ass. He hadn't lent Mr. Fern money at all. He'd used it

By the time I drove near the wildlife park, I could already see from afar that the rescue operation had ended. The ambulances and park management vehicles had their flashing lights on. Sam and Margaret were being helped to their feet. Their faces were pale, and they looked visibly shaken. Kendall's hair was a mess, and her eyes were red and puffy. A large chunk of her hair had been ripped out by an animal, leaving her with a bald patch. I parked my car and strutted over in my high heels. I plastered a worried look on my face. "Sam, Margaret, Kendall, are you alright? You guys almost gave me a heart attack! I rushed over as soon as I received your call, but traffic was terrible."I stepped forward and reached out to support Margaret. Kenneth marched toward me, veins bulging on his forehead. He seized my wrist so tightly that my bones ached. "Where the hell were you earlier, Morgiana Brooks? Why didn't you answer any of my calls? Do you have any idea how close Mom, Dad, and Ke
