Chapter 3

Author: You to You
"Where do you think you're going?" Kendall jeered before seizing me and dragging me straight to the rooftop.

Years of overwork had left me little more than skin and bones. Hence, she lifted me effortlessly.

After hauling me up to the rooftop, she abruptly let go. I stumbled forward, and her voice sounded behind me.

"What's the matter? Can't even stay on your feet anymore?" Kendall crossed her arms, standing a few paces away from me.

"Then again, someone with one foot in the grave like you can only stir up trouble," she spat out, eyeing me apathetically.

I turned around and caught the fleeting sneer at the corner of her mouth. My heart spasmed violently, and my vision instantly went black.

I staggered back a step, and my spine crashed against the railing. I could barely keep myself upright.

Her sneer widened when she saw that. "What's wrong? Can't take it anymore? My father was right about you—you're just a useless, sickly woman with nothing to offer except a paycheck and free childcare. Now you can't even stand up straight. What a pathetic waste of space!"

"How dare you…" The heart-wrenching pain rendered me speechless. All I could do was clutch my chest and gasp for air.

My legs gave out, and I slid down along the railing. My heart condition had flared up again, and I had no medication on me. I was as good as dead.

Kendall inched closer toward me and snarled, "Listen here, the second you die, I'll throw all your belongings out! You can forget about getting your hands on this house and my father's—"

Before she could finish, I reached out and grabbed her ankle in a vice grip. She yelped and lost her balance instantly.

"If I'm going down, you're coming with me!" I rasped, using the momentum of my fall to yank her toward me.

"Let go of me, you lunatic!" she shrieked, thrashing wildly. Her fingernails raked the air, but we'd already toppled over the guardrail.

I braced myself for the agony of death, but it never came.

…

My eyes flew open, and the first thing I saw was white—white roses, flickering candles, and ivory ribbons. I was sitting on a bed covered with a white satin comforter, dressed in a wedding gown.

As I took in my surroundings, my heart pounded. Wasn't this… the venue for Kenneth's and my wedding? Our home?

Before I could gather my thoughts, a voice rang out. "My, my, the bride sure is a lucky woman!"

The shrill voice dripped with jealousy. "She's gone from rags to riches by marrying Kenneth."

I turned toward the voice. It belonged to Gemma Smith, Kenneth's aunt, who never missed a chance to wag her tongue.

Gemma was making exaggerated faces as she spoke to the people beside her. Instead of reining herself in, she raised her voice.

Her gaze darted suggestively toward my lower abdomen. "If you ask me, Kenneth has so much going for him. He hasn't even been divorced long, so why is he in such a hurry to remarry? Unless..."

Gemma covered her mouth and giggled. "She used some special trick to get pregnant first!"

The women around her joined in, whispering and casting contemptuous glances my way.

If I were the cowardly self from my previous life—whose only desire was to fit into the Sterling family—I probably would've flushed red, lowered my head, and silently endured the humiliation.

But now, my heart was filled with a roaring wave of hatred.

Before anyone could register what was happening, I sprang to my feet and closed the distance between us. Under the stunned gazes of all the guests, I raised my hand and slapped Gemma across the face with all my might.

The entire room fell dead silent.

Gemma's head snapped to the side. She clutched her cheek and gaped at me. "H-How dare you lay a hand on me?"

"I did it because I wanted to. What, do I need to check the calendar first before I slap you?" I spat out. "You spew filth every time you open your mouth. Clearly, your family failed to teach you how to keep that filthy mouth of yours shut!"

Kenneth actually had the nerve to ask me for the money he'd invested back. I almost laughed out loud. I slapped him hard across the face. "Here, have a slap instead!" His world came crashing down around him, and he was so furious that he fainted on the spot. My life, on the other hand, was only just beginning. …Things were far from over, though. As soon as she learned the news, Margaret rushed to the hospital. She took one look at her son and realized his manhood was missing. Her eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, and with a shrill shriek, she set off to seek revenge on Roxana. Unfortunately, she was just an old hag with little strength. In the end, she got beaten black and blue. Her head was so swollen that it looked like a pumpkin. Margaret returned to the hospital in tears to see Kenneth. Her ears were filled with the chatter of the medical staff. "Morgiana really drew the short straw marrying into that family." "Kenneth looks like a decent man on the outsid

I accepted them. My fingers trembled slightly with excitement. Kenneth's money was finally in my hands. This time, I was genuinely thrilled. However, I wore a devastated look on the surface. I sneered inwardly, took a deep breath, and forced myself to calm down. My voice was choked with emotion. "G-Get up first. Stop humiliating yourself in public..."He looked as though he'd been granted a reprieve and hurriedly scrambled to his feet. I turned my back on him and our neighbors and sniffled. "Let's talk after I calm down." Right after saying that, I clutched the stack of cards, walked back into my bedroom, and shut the door. The moment the door clicked shut, all the sorrow vanished from my face, and my eyes lit up. My first step was a total success. Now, it was time to make that shameless couple pay an even steeper price. …After getting my hands on his money, I pretended to forgive Kenneth, albeit reluctantly, while secretly setting my plan in motion. I knew him all

My hands and feet turned ice-cold, and hatred surged in my eyes. I wanted nothing more than to rush over and kill Kenneth and Roxana. But I couldn't do that just yet. I didn't emerge from my hiding spot until they had left in post-coital bliss. The air still reeked of their revolting rendezvous. After getting into the car, I created an alt account without a moment's hesitation. I clipped the most explicit part of the video and posted it online. The video had been censored to cover their explicit parts, so it didn't qualify as the distribution of pornography. It spread like wildfire. I sat in the car, watching the group chat notifications and repost alerts pop up one after another on my phone. I felt perfectly calm. Wasn't Kenneth so sure I'd always forgive him? Now, it was time for everyone to see what kind of lowlifes he and his beloved really were! …In less than an hour, the video had gone viral. I timed it just right and beat them home. I rushed into my bedroom, locked

Roxana had probably been pestering Kenneth relentlessly in the last few days. Three days later, when I brought up the deal again, his attitude had softened considerably. "Here, take this." He handed me a card. "Be extremely careful," he reminded me sternly."Don't worry." I accepted it with a sweet smile. "I won't let you down." The moment I stepped out of the house, the smile on my face instantly vanished. I'd won this first round. However, the real battle had only just begun. …After getting my hands on the money, I pretended to be busy setting up the business on the surface while secretly keeping a close eye on Kenneth's every move. He went to Roxana's place more and more frequently. His excuses were always the same—meeting clients. It was laughably clumsy. One evening, he told me he had a business dinner on the outskirts of the city. I had installed a mini tracker on his car beforehand, and I watched it stop next to a wetland park three miles from the golf course. I

"Absolutely." I inched closer to Kenneth and lowered my voice. "Briar told me it's a pretty big shipment, and we have to pay the full amount upfront within the next couple of days. If we can buy the whole lot, we can make at least 150 grand by reselling it." 150 grand was no small amount. Kenneth leaned back into the cushions. "It sounds like a good deal, but we don't have that much cash on hand right now." "I know." I took his hand. "So I was thinking… why don't we ask Mr. Fern to return the money we lent him? This deal is practically guaranteed to make a profit. We can pay him back as soon as we wrap it up. We can even give him an extra 20 grand as interest."His fingers twitched slightly before he casually withdrew his hand and picked up his glass to take a sip. "Mr. Fern's cash flow still hasn't recovered. It wouldn't be right for us to ask him for our money back now." I sneered inwardly. It wouldn't be appropriate, my ass. He hadn't lent Mr. Fern money at all. He'd used it

By the time I drove near the wildlife park, I could already see from afar that the rescue operation had ended. The ambulances and park management vehicles had their flashing lights on. Sam and Margaret were being helped to their feet. Their faces were pale, and they looked visibly shaken. Kendall's hair was a mess, and her eyes were red and puffy. A large chunk of her hair had been ripped out by an animal, leaving her with a bald patch. I parked my car and strutted over in my high heels. I plastered a worried look on my face. "Sam, Margaret, Kendall, are you alright? You guys almost gave me a heart attack! I rushed over as soon as I received your call, but traffic was terrible."I stepped forward and reached out to support Margaret. Kenneth marched toward me, veins bulging on his forehead. He seized my wrist so tightly that my bones ached. "Where the hell were you earlier, Morgiana Brooks? Why didn't you answer any of my calls? Do you have any idea how close Mom, Dad, and Ke
