“It looks gorgeous!” Freya Evergreen beamed as she admired her reflection in the mirror. The smoky eyes, sculpted cheekbones, and soft nude lipstick gave her that expensive, polished glow that always turned heads. She turned to me with a bright smile. “I love what you did! If you weren’t always so busy, I’d steal you as my personal makeup artist in a heartbeat.” I laughed softly and ran my fingers through her dark hair, smoothing a few stray strands. She was all set for the runway, and I was relieved my part was almost done. I glanced at my watch, feeling the anticipation build. Just one more hour and I could finally breathe. “Elara! I need you over here!” Josh Murray, the fashion world’s golden boy, called out. I excused myself from Freya and hurried over. Backstage was pure chaos—models rushing around, stylists scrambling, everyone on edge. “Not too bold, keep it balanced with the dress, okay?” he said quickly. I nodded with a smile as he moved on to the next girl. Today was Josh’s big moment—he was launching his most anticipated collection of the year. I studied the model in front of me, figuring out which shades would suit her skin tone and complement the outfit perfectly. “Dry skin?” I asked her. Her brown eyes met mine and she shook her head. “Oily, actually.” “Got it.” I picked the right base, the perfect foundation, and my trusty beauty blender. I always worked better with the blender than a brush. “Elara!” Josh shouted again. I picked up the pace, making sure every detail was flawless. “Close your eyes and lean back,” I told the model. She did as I asked. The noisy chatter of the crowded room faded into the background as I worked, dabbing foundation across her face and neck. With the blender, I smoothed everything until her bronze skin glowed softly. I was almost finished when Josh’s voice boomed again. I groaned inwardly but stayed focused, brushing highlighter along her cheekbones. “Part your lips a little,” I said, carefully lining her full pout with the pencil. “Josh! Come take a look!” I called, scanning the room packed with over forty people moving at full speed. He appeared out of nowhere behind me and studied my work for a second before giving me a thumbs-up. “The show starts in ten minutes and the models still aren’t ready! God, I’m losing my mind!” he muttered. “You’ve got this, Josh. Take a deep breath and let the stress go. Everything will be fine,” I reassured him. Even though he’d done dozens of shows around the world, he still got nervous like it was his first time. I remembered meeting him four years ago. He’d seemed so intimidating back then, but I quickly learned he was actually the opposite. We weren’t exactly close friends, but we worked well together now. “Yeah,” he said, straightening his sharp geometric tie. He led me over to the final model. Where on earth were Lily Harper and Mandy? They were supposed to be my assistants, yet I was doing almost everything myself. “Nervous?” I teased the girl named Darcy McEwen. Her eyes stayed closed while I worked on her eye makeup. “Oh please, I’m practically floating,” she joked. Ten minutes later, I watched the models line up neatly, ready to step onto the runway with Josh standing proudly beside them. The announcement began, and one by one the ten girls walked out to the main hall. “Oh God, that was exhausting!” Mandy flopped onto a chair, letting out a dramatic sigh. I raised an eyebrow at her. Seriously? What exactly had she done? “Where were you two?” I asked, crossing my arms. Only a few stylists were left now, packing up accessories. “Working, obviously,” she shrugged, avoiding my eyes. Lily Harper looked guilty, like she knew it was a weak excuse. I’d chosen them because I thought they were reliable and would actually help when I needed it. Clearly my judgment wasn’t as good as I’d hoped. “You’re my assistants. You were supposed to be helping me. I was looking everywhere for you,” I said firmly, the frustration from earlier bubbling up again. “Tell me the truth, Mandy. Why did you disappear?” She sat up straighter, biting her lip before mumbling, “I came to learn… to gain experience.” “And what exactly were you doing?” “We were doing our job,” she insisted. “Ask Lily. Kimberly Hale demanded we fetch her manager right in the middle of her makeup. I told her it wasn’t our job, but she started yelling at us. So we had to run all the way to the fifteenth floor to find him!” I glanced at Lily Harper. She nodded, her ponytail bouncing. I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose. “Fine. But next time something like that happens, come to me first, okay?” “Yes, ma’am!” --- I was never letting Mandy sit next to me on a plane again. Ever. That girl practically climbed into my lap instead of staying in her own seat. God, I was wiped out. Three hours in the air had left every muscle in my body aching, but I was so happy to be home. With a tired smile, I unlocked the door and stepped inside. “I’m home!” I called out cheerfully. I kicked off my heels—my poor feet were killing me—and walked through the hallway into the living room. It was empty. I dropped my bag and the packages onto the blue couch and headed straight for the kitchen. “Sweetheart, where are you?” I said loud enough for the whole house to hear. No answer. The kitchen was quiet too, so I went to check his room. I should’ve known he’d be in there. The door was slightly open. I let out a soft sigh. “Sweetheart,” I called again, already smiling because I could picture him rolling his eyes. I pushed the door open and there he was—my adorable little boy, sitting cross-legged on the bed with his eyes glued to the iPad. He had headphones on, which explained why he hadn’t heard me. And he was talking to someone. The moment he noticed me, his face lit up with a huge grin. He pulled off the headphones and ran over, throwing his arms around me in a tight hug. “You’re back, Mommy!” I laughed and covered his face with kisses. I loved this kid more than anything in the world. “You came at the perfect time, Mommy. Aunt Clara Bennett is on the call,” he said. “She wants to talk to you.” Clever boy. “I brought you some gifts. Go check the living room,” I told him, ruffling his jet-black hair. Before he dashed off, he gave me a quick peck on the cheek while I crouched down to his level. Once he was gone, I picked up the iPad. My best friend’s familiar face appeared on the screen. “No wonder Leo ran off!” she pouted playfully, then broke into a big smile. “So how are you, Miss Always-Busy?” “Don’t even ask,” I groaned, flopping onto the bed. I hadn’t slept in twenty hours and had worked straight for fifteen. The second my back hit the soft mattress, I felt pure relief. “How are you? And why are you grinning like that?” Her smile only grew wider, making me even more curious. She didn’t say a word. Instead, she lifted her hand toward the camera. At first it looked normal, but then I noticed it the sparkling stone sitting pretty on her ring finger. My heartbeat quickened the second our eyes met. A strange flutter spread through my stomach, and it felt almost wrong to keep looking at him like I was crossing some invisible line. I wanted to turn away, but his gaze held me there.I swirled the half-full glass of white wine in my hand, unable to stop watching him.“What’s he doing here?” I asked Lily.Like most of the women in the room, Lily was completely captivated by Adrian Blackwood.“He’s one of the sponsors. A big name in Garnet,” she said dreamily.I already knew that, but it still didn’t explain why he was at this party.“But why is he here? Sponsors weren’t even invited.”“Who knows? I’m just happy I got to see him. He’s so handsome… My heart can’t handle it.”I sighed, finished off my wine in one gulp, and set the glass on the bar.The party had been thrown together at the last minute to welcome Adrian for his huge investment in the movie. I hadn’t packed anything fancy since I thought this trip was strictly work.My phone
Victor came striding toward me with a deep scowl etched across his face. Lily shifted nervously at my side. “So you’re here. How?” he demanded, hands shoved deep into his khaki pants.“Same way you are,” I shot back.“Where’s that guy?” he asked, glancing around as if he expected the intimidating stranger to pop out any second. “Who was he anyway? You know him?”“Why do you care so much about my business?” I replied, crossing my arms over my chest. One of his eyebrows shot up. The usual smug smirk was nowhere to be seen his face actually looked serious for once.“I’m not concerned, Elara Vale,” he said in that irritating tone of his. “Just figured you must’ve done something for him to pull you away like that. Who is he? Your sugar daddy or something?”“He is not my sugar daddy!”Victor sneered. “I think he is. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit.”Talking to him always made my blood boil. He was the biggest asshole I’d ever met. I huffed, spun on my heel, and walked away without another word
I’d never stepped foot inside a private jet before, but here I was, sitting in Adrian’s. I still couldn’t quite believe how I’d ended up here. After that possessive confession in the car, my knees had turned to jelly and I didn’t have the strength to say no when he offered to fly me to the Maldives with him.I kept worrying about what Zara would think. Even though Adrian had promised he’d already spoken to her, the panic wouldn’t leave me alone.I tried closing my eyes to get some sleep, but I could feel Adrian watching me the whole time. I shifted in my seat and pressed my lips together. A soft chuckle came from beside me, so I finally gave in and opened my eyes.“What?” I asked.“You’re cute,” he said with a quiet laugh, his eyes warm with affection. My cheeks heated up instantly, and I tried to hide it. This man could make me blush with barely any effort.“Stop staring at me and let me sleep,” I muttered, shooting him a look. His lips twitched in amusement as he closed the laptop o
He smirked that dangerous, devilish smile that always turned my knees to jelly. Everything suddenly made sense. Adrian was the boss who’d asked to see me, and this serious-looking man had to be one of his bodyguards.“You called for me… why?” I asked.Adrian leaned closer in his seat. For a split second I thought he was about to kiss me, but he was only pulling the door I’d left open shut.Heat flooded my cheeks. Mortified, I looked away.He settled back and said, “Because I wanted to see you, Moonshine.”Every time he called me that, something fluttered inside my chest and stirred up a whole storm of feelings.“I-I was clear last time,” I said quickly. “We shouldn’t be meeting like this. There can’t be anything between—”He didn’t let me finish. His mouth crashed into mine.My eyes flew open and my toes curled as his warm lips claimed me. His arm slid around my back, pulling me closer while he took full control of the kiss. I tried to resist, but it was pointless. A soft moan escaped
I froze, completely thrown off.“What?”That was the last thing I’d expected to hear.None of it made any sense.I glanced over at Victor. That smug little smirk was plastered on his face as he winked at me.Asshole.“He can’t stand me. Why would he say that?” I asked, still baffled that he’d told Zara not to replace me.Zara just shrugged, like it was nothing.“You should be grateful. Whatever his reasons are, at least you get to keep the job, right?”“Yeah… but—”“Get back to work, Elara. And don’t forget what I told you,” she said, already walking off.My shoulders slumped.I really didn’t want to work with him at all.The idiot had made me his makeup artist just to mess with me and keep me on edge.I shot him a glare while he lounged there, clearly loving every second of my discomfort. There was nothing I could do about it, so I took a deep breath and headed over.Vivian hadn’t shown up yet, which was a small mercy no snide comments to deal with right away.He was sprawled in the
ELARAPeople have no clue how much their dirty looks and hushed whispers can destroy someone. I felt every single one of them. Thanks to Adrian’s surprise visit and Vivian’s explosive outburst, I’d become the hottest topic of gossip throughout the entire company. Now everyone saw me as the shameless homewrecker who tried to steal Vivian’s man the so-called power couple the media couldn’t stop talking about.I kept wondering how long it would take for them to get bored and move on to the next scandal. When I found out Adrian had shown up right after I left him, I was hit with a mix of shock, curiosity, and nerves. Stacy wasn’t sure exactly what happened between him and Vivian, but she figured he’d come to clear the air. She was the only one in the whole place who actually believed me and didn’t look at me like I was guilty. I couldn’t even begin to tell her how grateful I was for that.I kept my chin up and ignored the murmurs as I walked through the foyer. Zara had called me earlier w
“Elara?” My mother’s voice froze me in place. Something inside my chest cracked open at the sound of it. I turned around, and the moment her eyes met mine, they widened in pure shock. “Oh my God! Elara! Is that really you?”In two quick steps, she was right in front of me, grabbing both of my hand
The knots in my stomach grew tighter with every passing minute as the cab drew closer to Denvar Street the neighborhood where I was born and raised. After days of overthinking it, I had finally decided to do what I should have done years ago: visit my parents. I hated myself for being such a coward
ADRIAN “…and yeah, I already told you that,” I muttered, only half paying attention to Nathaniel. My eyes kept drifting across the crowded hall, searching for one particular person. “So what do you think?” he asked. I blinked and finally turned to him, having no idea what he’d been saying. “Sorry
ELARAI could call my best friend Mrs. Clara Bennett for the rest of my life now. The wedding had gone perfectly, without a single hitch, and the reality of it hit me harder than I expected.
