PEARL – POV

The hall was buzzing with excitement and tension. Today, the results of our academic evaluation were being announced. I tried to keep my head low and my heart steady, but my nerves were everywhere. My fingers gripped the hem of my robe as the head scholar walked in, scroll in hand, his expression unreadable.

"The top five students of this round’s evaluation," he began, voice echoing across the stone walls, "are as follows."

I held my breath.

“First—Demyan.”

PEARL – POVThe hall was buzzing with excitement and tension. Today, the results of our academic evaluation were being announced. I tried to keep my head low and my heart steady, but my nerves were everywhere. My fingers gripped the hem of my robe as the head scholar walked in, scroll in hand, his expression unreadable."The top five students of this round’s evaluation," he began, voice echoing across the stone walls, "are as follows."I held my breath.“First—Demyan.”No surprise there. The room responded with a mix of admiration and envy. Demyan, seated a few rows ahead, didn’t even flinch. Typical.“Second place is shared by two students… Perin and Lucien.”My stomach dropped. Wait, Lucien?I turned slowly to the side, only to catch Lucien already looking at me, a smug smirk curling on his lips. I instantly looked away.“And fifth Killian and Rowan.”A round of applause followed, but my ears were already ringing.“Now,” the head scholar continued, “as this evaluation concludes, you

DEMYAN – POVThe room was dim, the lantern flickering low as we prepared to sleep. The silence between Perin and me still clung to the air like thick fog. Even though we were speaking again, there were unspoken things—unsaid emotions—hanging between us.She looked tired. Overwhelmed. And she didn’t know that I was more than just watching her, I was memorizing her. Every little sigh. Every time she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. Every time she fidgeted with the hem of her sleeve. She didn’t know that I was battling everything inside me not to reach out and pull her into my arms.Because I knew.I knew who she was.I knew what she meant to me.And yet, all I could do was protect her in the ways she didn’t notice. Quiet ways.Like now.Rowan, with his ever-present princely charm, threw his blanket next to hers and began to lie down casually. “I’ll just crash here, yeah?” he said with a soft grin, eyes drifting too long on Perin.I didn’t say a word at first. Just moved.I grabbe

PEARL – POVMy feet felt like stone as I climbed the stairs to our room. The corridor stretched on longer than usual, every step echoing with the heaviness in my chest. Why did everything feel so twisted lately?Lucien’s warning. The masked man who protected me. The lingering chill of danger in the air. And Demyan… his silence had hurt more than I wanted to admit.I reached the door, hesitating with my hand on the handle.I wasn’t ready to face him.Not after what I said. Not after pushing him away when all he ever did was protect me even when I told him not to. Still, I opened the door. The room was dim, lit only by the dying fire. And there he was.Sitting on the edge of the bed, elbows resting on his knees, head bowed. He looked up, eyes locking with mine. For a moment, everything went still.I didn’t know what to say.He didn’t move. Just stared at me quiet, unreadable.“I…” My voice barely came out.I stepped inside, closing the door behind me. My heart thundered. “I wanted to sa

PEARL – POVThe bell rang a sharp, final sound that echoed through the quiet halls.I exhaled, clutching my books to my chest, ready to bolt out of the classroom. But before I could even take a step, a shadow blocked my path.Lucien.He stood in front of me, that ever-present, smug expression dancing on his lips. “Leaving so soon, little scholar?” he asked smoothly, his voice dripping with amusement. “You’ve been avoiding me.”I tried to sidestep him, but he moved too quickly, pressing one hand against the wooden frame of the doorway, caging me in. My heart raced.“I’m not in the mood for games,” I whispered, keeping my eyes fixed on the floor. “Move.”He leaned in just enough for his breath to brush against my ear. “Oh, but I am.”My body stiffened. I could sense the shift in his energy no longer playful, but calculating. Hungry.“I know your secret,” he murmured, his voice like ice. “And I know what you're trying to hide. That scent of yours… it's faint, but it's there. And it's not

ROWAN POVFrom the moment I laid eyes on him, I knew.Perin wasn’t like the others.Maybe it was in the way his gaze flickered too gently. Or how he flinched slightly when spoken to too harshly. There was something soft hidden beneath that forced composure. Something familiar… something feminine. And then I knew.Perin was a girl. And since then, it hasn’t been easy. Watching her laugh with Killian. Watching her bicker with Demyan. Especially Demyan. He gets under her skin—close in ways I don’t like.I clenched my fist as I leaned against the outer wall of the academy, just beyond the garden. I could see her silhouette through the stone arches. Sitting with her head low. Maybe she was still upset. Maybe she missed him.I didn’t.In fact… part of me felt relieved that they were distant now.Demyan was always so intense around her. Always watching her like he knew something. Like he deserved to.But he doesn’t.He doesn’t know the truth like I do.He doesn’t know the kind of mate she c

Demyan Pov It was like standing in a room full of flowers and only smelling cold stone. Too clean. Too intentional. He was hiding something.I stared at him for a long time. At the way his lashes brushed his cheek, the way his chest rose and fell, slow and steady. There was no tension in his body now—none of the usual effort he put into acting tough.Just softness. Warmth. Realness.I turned away and exhaled quietly. I had to stop. I was crossing a line now—one I couldn’t uncross.Get it together, Demyan.---MorningThe soft creak of the door woke me. I cracked one eye open and saw Perin crouch to pick something up. His shoulders tensed. His eyes darted toward me and then quickly away. Guilt? He shoved something behind his back—a paper?I kept still, watching him.He turned around, startled to see me awake. I sat up slowly.“Everything okay?” I asked. His expression flickered.“Yeah,” he said with a tight smile. “Just… a reminder to study harder.”Liar.I could smell it—not on him,
