Nathan’s POV

The line hums with a hollow, rhythmic clicking that makes the hair on my arms stand up. I press the burner phone so hard against my ear the plastic groans. Answer the damn phone, Zack. Answer.

The click of a connection finally hits. It isn’t the low, silken voice I’m starving for.

"Daddy! I got the phone!" Leo’s high-pitched chirp leaks through. Safe. He’s alive. The air finally leaves my lungs in a ragged burst.

"Leo?" I close my eyes, leaning my forehead against the cold window o

Frederic’s POVThey took him. They dragged Zack out of the ward right from under my nose. The realization hit like a physical blow. They’ve seen the cracks in the mirror. The masquerade is over, and the time for subtler poisons has passed. The Cocolink organization is a fractured mess, especially with the news of my mother’s "interment" in my basement leaking to the lower ranks. One more shove, and the whole house of cards ignites.I don't mind the chaos. In fact, the more the streets bleed, the more they’ll beg for a strong hand to stop the hemorrhaging. Having Zack—the legendary Alpha's mate—at my side would legitimize the coup. But I have to teach him about the cost of defiance. He never would have left if it weren't for those lapdogs Nathan left behind. Zack is too soft, too desperate for stability to have planned that escape himself. It was the Betas. It was Cavanaugh. They are the cancer in my path.I need a clean sweep. I need to eliminate the guards and the "hero" Drake Cavana

The moment the heavy SUV door thudded shut and Marcus engaged the child locks, Zack leaned forward, his fingers digging into the leather of the headrest."Talk," he barked. "We’re moving. Now tell me why we’re running like thieves."Marcus gripped the wheel, his eyes scanning the mirrors with a predatory flick. "Zack, look. I’m sorry we had to dangle the carrot, but we haven't actually heard from Nathan."Zack’s chest constricted, a cold coil of dread winding around his ribs. He replayed the hospital scene—the urgent looks, the frantic pace. "Lucas said the orders came directly from him. You lied to me?""We didn't know you’d gone back to that prick Kane," Marcus explained, his voice low and gravelly. "Nathan was explicit before the blackout. He doesn't want you within a mile of that man.""Tell him the rest, Marcus," Drake grumbled from the passenger seat, his hand resting near his holster. "He needs to know who to aim at.""Nathan wanted a new team because Kane helped you scrub the

"Can we call him?"My chest aches. "His phone is broken, remember? We talked about this.""I thought maybe it got fixed," he pouts, twisting the ear of his stuffed elephant. He looks up again. "Can we go home today?""Leo, I wish—""Wish granted," Lucas announces, bursting into the room like a storm. "We're leaving, Zack. Pack your bags."I stare at him, stunned. "What? Did Kane sign off?""Don't care," Lucas quips. Marcus is right behind him, looking grim."What's going on?" I ask, pulling Leo closer."Explanation in the car," Marcus says, already grabbing my suitcase. "You hear that, Leo? We're going home!""Yay!" Leo starts bouncing, which makes my stomach do a violent somersault. I barely grab the bin in time.As I’m finishing, Dr. Kane appears in the doorway. His face is a mask of professional outrage. "What is the meaning of this?""We're discharging him," Lucas says. His voice is a low growl I've never heard from him before. He looks ready to kill."We discussed this," Kane say

Pathetic.I leave the perimeter for a few hours, and the woman gets herself pinched at a damn nail salon. Of all the amateur, vanity-fueled blunders. I could wrap my hands around her throat.Finding her isn't the challenge. They wouldn't take a Durand to the Pack House—too much risk of a scene. They’re too "civilized" to dump her in a hole without a paper trail yet. They’ll have her at the Cocolink Enforcement Hub, tucked away in an interrogation suite while they try to find a charge that sticks. My mother isn't stupid enough to spill the major plays, but she’s weak. They’ll trip her up, feed her lies until she leaks a detail that guts my timeline. I clearly overestimated her utility.I watch the Hub’s main gate from the shadows of an alley. I wait for the high-level Betas to clock out, letting the night shift settle into their rhythm. Fewer eyes, lazier guards, and a skeleton crew on the monitors.I weigh a dozen entries. Precision is for surgeons; tonight, I want a riot. I’ve alread

Madeline’s face drained of color as she stared at the high-definition monitor in the corner of the safehouse. On the screen, Zack and that small, dark-haired kid were walking across a stage in Havenfall. The boy waved at a sea of cameras with a practiced, hauntingly familiar charm."Goddamn it," Madeline hissed, the words catching in her throat.Nathan had been glued to the television for days, pacing the small living room like a predator in a cage. He’d been oscillating between staring at the screen and tearing through every newspaper Madeline allowed into the house. She’d been fastidious, burning the morning posts and hiding the remote, but this was a tactical disaster. Zack was too polished, too believable. And the kid—Lucas—was a mirror image of Nathan. Even through the grainy broadcast, the boy’s cadence, the way he tilted his head while speaking to the reporters, was pure Durand. Her entire play depended on Nathan seeing Zack as a traitor—a cold, calculating opportunist who had

The grease and grime on the men across from me didn't bother me; it was the sheer lack of originality. They looked like they’d been plucked straight from a low-budget mafia flick—all scarred knuckles, faded ink, and cheap leather. A collection of bottom-feeders and back-alley muscle.Exactly what I needed to burn Havenfall to the ground. With Nathan deep in the trenches elsewhere, the city was a wounded animal. I’d be a payout-chaser myself if I didn't exploit the gap."You're positive the boss is out of play?" The leader grunted. He ran a whetstone over a jagged blade, a pathetic attempt at a power move.I didn't blink. "It’s been the only headline for seventy-two hours. Nathan Durand is gone. The keys are with his underbosses, and believe me, Lucas and Marcus couldn't hold a candle to the man if they were soaked in gasoline. The city is a buffet. Help yourselves."The man spat on the floor, sliding the paper I’d thrown toward him with a muddy boot. "What’s your angle?""Chaos is a l
