Amelia reached across the table and held her hand. There was nothing more to say.

The alcohol might dull the pain for a while, but it could never truly heal her heart.

She knew this had to be a misunderstanding, but where was Alexander? As Sophia's husband, shouldn't he be here to clear things up?

Back at the other end of the city, the man in question was rushing frantically through the city.

After failing to locate Sophia at the office, he had driven like a madman to Sophia’s old apartment.

Nothing.

His chest felt like it was being crushed with every second she remained missing. He could feel the world slipping from beneath his feet.

Worse still was the fact that Gerald was in the shadows and Larry might take action if he gets a perfect opportunity.

In desperation, he rushed to the villa where Catherine and Ethan lived. He knocked urgently, barely containing his panic.

Catherine opened the door, her face lighting up when she saw him.

"Alex! Come in! How are you?" she greeted war

Back at The Last Stop Bar, Sophia was still drinking, her eyes glassy and her words slightly slurred. Amelia, sitting beside her, had been trying to coax her into leaving for the past hour. “Bestie, you’ve had enough. We should leave,” she said, gently placing a hand on Sophia’s arm. Sophia blinked lazily, pushing the glass away from her lips. “No... I can take a… few more drinks… Amelia.” Amelia stared in disbelief. Sophia was already slurring, yet she wanted more. With a sigh, she reached for the glass and pushed it further out of her reach. “Come on, let’s go,” she said, her voice firmer this time. Reluctantly, Sophia nodded. “Fine, but I don’t want to see him.” Amelia bit her lip, glancing around the bar. She knew who she was referring to but where else should she drop her?

I don't wan’ to… see him.” Sophia said, urging Amelia to lead her to the car.Amelia nodded, agreeing with Sophia. I came as soon as I heard you were in danger.”Sophia froze as her mind cleared slightly, recognizing the voice.“Marcus?” she asked, turning around to confirm.Sure enough, Marcus

Alexander kept quiet, unsure of where to start or, rather, how to start. But Sophia wasn't in a hurry; she just stood there, watching him.“Can we talk somewhere else?” he asked cautiously, glancing at Amelia.“I'll be inside. Call me if you need anything.” Catching on his hesitation, Amelia interjected, tapping Sophia on her shoulder.Sophia nodded appreciatively. As soon as Amelia went inside, the air between them felt heavier. Alexander stepped closer, his shoes barely making a sound. He wanted to reach out and hold her in his arms, to make sure she was still his, but he stopped himself. Rachel fumbled with the keys, her hands shaking. The moment she pushed the door open, she froze. “Oh my God!” Her voice was barely audible. The room was scattered, with glasses on the floor and furniture overturned, and in the middle of it all, Jessica sat with her back against her bed, her expression blank.Rachel’s stomach dropped. “Jessica!” She rushed in, nearly slipping on the scattered glasses. “What happened?”“My dear, what have you done?” She cried, as her heart broke, seeing her daughter sitting in the middle of the mess.“Meccy, get someone to clean up quickly,” she ordered the assistant and helped Jessica up.“Honey, what do you think you're doing? You need to listen to dad and grandpa. They mean well. Just go abroad for a few months. Okay?” She persuaded her.“Mom, I don't want to. What's so special about that woman? Sophia arrived at the Paradise Restaurant, located directly across from Evans Tower. “You must be Miss Blackwell. This way please.” A middle-aged woman approached. Sophia nodded and followed her inside with her bodyguards in tow. They took the elevator to the 26th floor and once they got to the furthest room, the woman turned to Sophia's bodyguards. “You can wait here. She'll be okay inside.” The bodyguards didn't budge. They continued following them, ignoring her completely. The woman looked at Sophia, but she, too, ignored her. “Miss Blackwell, Mrs Jason doesn't like too many people in her room. Why don't you ask them to wait for you here?” the woman asked politely. “They came with me. Why should I leave them outside?” Sophia asked. “Can't you just order them to wait here? Why are you making this so complicated?” The woman asked, getting impatient. “You can order them yourself,” Sophia retorted. If I leave them outside, what would be the purpose of bringing them

Over the next few days, Sophia was busy finalizing her drafts for the competition. Alexander got busy with his work too, and surprisingly, he hadn't heard from Jessica since that night. He had done a lot in cornering Gerald, making it hard for him to make a move. On this day, he was standing by the window of his office, his eyes cast over the view of Eldridge City. He could see almost three-quarters of the city from his office. But his mind was consumed with other matters. The city view didn’t catch his attention at all. A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. “Come in,” he said, still looking outside. Mark, his able assistant, walked in with an iPad in hand. “Boss, the investigation about Larry is done and the information has been compiled. Should we send it to him?” Mark asked, scrolling through the data. Alexander turned around, tucking his hands in his pants pockets. “There’s no rush. Wait for the right time,” he said, walking back to his desk. “Alright, boss,” Ma

Once inside, Nina saw an elegant looking young woman, probably in her twenties, adjusting her makeup in the washroom mirror. She looked like the kind of woman who never checks price tags because everything about her screamed wealthy. She was dressed in a silky white blouse tucked neatly into caramel-colored trousers that hugged her just right. Her heels were sharp, shiny, and expensive. Even her designer handbag, resting by the sink, looked like it had its own security detail. Her makeup was impossible to miss; long lashes, bold red lips, heavy eyeliner, and skin so smooth it looked airbrushed. Her black hair hung straight and sleek down her back, parted perfectly in the middle. She didn’t need to say anything. Just standing there, fixing her lipstick in the mirror, she looked like someone who was used to getting her way.***Meanwhile, in the tallest building in Eldridge City, the Evans Tower, Alexander sat at his desk as he listened to Mark deliver the financial reports. After Mark

After a brief chat and a few hugs, Alexander and Sophia walked off toward their car. A man in black opened the door for them as the sleek vehicle purred to life and pulled away slowly.Amelia and Michael remained behind watching their car until it disappeared.“You missed your chance to score a hug,” Michael teased.Amelia rolled her eyes. “And you missed your chance to shut up.”“Okay, ma’am. “What is it?” He turned around, eyeing her vigilantly.“Can you promise me that no one will ever find out about this, please? Not even Sophia,” she requested.Alexander paused, overwhelmed with guilt. If he had been more careful, none of this would have happened.“Okay, you have my word,” he promised and left the room.As the door clicked shut, Jessica’s trembling lips slowly curled into a cunning smile.“And the game has just begun. Sophia... I hope you’re ready, darling,” she whispered, wiping away her fake tears.By the time Alexander settled, it was already past 1 AM. He checked his phone and was shocked to find several missed calls from Sophia.“Oh no, I forgot to update her!” he mumbled, his muscles tensing as he raked a hand through his hair.It was too late to call her now! With a heavy sigh, he sent her a text:‘Hi honey, I hope you’re doing well. Back in Sadrova restaurant, Alexander emerged from the bathroom after several knocks on the door.He wrapped a towel around his waist and opened the door.Tim hurried in with his bag. He looked just like any other thirty-year-old guy who happened to be on duty. His white doctor’s coat was slightly creased like he’d rushed out of the hospital without a second thought. Underneath, he had on a black T-shirt and jeans, just something comfortable for a long shift. A stethoscope still hung around his neck, probably out of habit more than anything. His glasses gave him a smart, slightly serious look, but there was an easygoing air about him.“What took you so long?” Alexander asked, masking the discomfort in his body."I left my patients waiting just to come here, and you're complaining?" Tim asked casually, placing his bag on the couch.Alexander just snorted, glaring at him before making his way to the couch.Tim didn’t waste time once he saw Alexander’s condition. He quickly prepared a s

Alexander closed his eyes tightly, unwilling to look at her. Images of Sophia flooded his mind.“No, I can’t let this happen. She tried to resist but this time, Alexander shoved her harder, and she fell from the bed.He didn't even spare her a glance; he quickly bent toward the bedside table, grabbed his phone, and staggered out of the room.He struggled to walk in the hallway, holding on to the wall for support. When he reached the next suite, he found a couple holding each other as they were about to make their way in.The man opened the door with a gentlemanly smile, signaling to the lady to get in first. Before the woman could react, Alexander snatched the room card and staggered inside leaving the words, “Sorry, I need to use the room.”Before the man could react, he had already locked the door from the inside.“Damn it!” The man

Meanwhile, back in Hawthorne's ancestral home, Marcus knocked on his grandpa's bedroom, casually tucking his other hand into his pants pocket. After Raphael murmured from inside, he pushed the door open and walked inside. The room was dimly lit, with a bedside lamp casting a soft amber glow over the space. The air held a comforting mix of lavender and woody from the old oak furniture.A large, neatly made bed stood against the far wall, its thick duvet turned down slightly, perhaps he was ready for bedtime. An antique clock ticked quietly on the wall, and a pair of slippers sat perfectly aligned by the edge of a plush rug.Raphael was seated on a couch near the window with a steaming cup of tea on the small table in front of him. Despite the warmth in the room, he had a shawl draped over his shoulders, and the lines on his face seemed deeper under the soft light. He seemed to have aged more since the last time Marcus saw him. “Grandpa,” he greeted.“Sit,” Raphael said, pointing at t

Mark turned to him apologetically, “Sorry, boss, I will...” “It's okay. You can go.” Alexander cut him off coldly. Then he added, “Mark, you can take your leave. You will be rewarded for today." He had just remembered it was supposed to be Mark's off day. “Thank you, boss.” Mark nodded happily before walking out, knowing that his boss didn't blame him. Bullock swallowed hard as he stood up to face Jessica. “Miss Jason, whatever deal we had with your father is being handled by my secretary. Please go speak to her,” he said politely. “I just did that but she couldn't give me any substantial explanation. “You're the pride of the Hawthornes, my dear. That Sophia was our bad luck; Look at how we're prospering now that she's gone. My son is more accomplished now that she isn't here to drag him behind.” Evelyn clapped like a child who just won a prize, her eyes glowing with pride. She walked over to Marcus and patted his shoulder like he’d just won a major award. “I’m so proud of you, son.” “Marcus, I hope you're not still dreaming of bringing her back,” Lauren scoffed, tilting her chin up in distaste. Marcus leaned back lazily, his arms spread across the back of the couch. He smirked, brushing invisible dust from his shirt like a king making a declaration. “Sophia will be mine sooner or later..." “Marcus, you're just digging your own grave. Go see your grandpa now.” His father's angry voice came from upstairs interrupting them. “So it's true you don't believe in me, Dad.
